First off: I do not intend this to be a discussion about the Republic Question, but recognise that it will probably end up that way.
What this thread is about is this: I want to make a guild for Australian republicans, and while I have the guild (not set up, but I almost always have a spare guild) I do not know how big the demand for it would be, so:
For the republicans here: If you had some say in framing the republic, how would you like it to operate? I will give my own opinions as an example: I would like a unicameral legislature--National Assembly--(in other words, get rid of the senate) which consists of 150 representatives from each state and territory who are elected through proportional representation (so no local seats. All the votes in the state are tallied up, and seats are divided up based on the amount of votes). The Head-of-State would be the President (get rid of PM) who would be a member of the National Assembly elected by the National Assembly. He would appoint a cabinet (Defence, Finance, Health, Education, any others) of 8 other members of the Assembly.
So, again, I would prefer if the thread wasn't cluttered with agruments over this or that republican plan, or whether or not Australia should even be a republic. I am looking for discussion ideas to put in the new guild.
Hopefully this will work =)

Firstly, I'd like to say that I am not sure posting here is going to help you much. Not a lot of Australians actually come here anymore and those who do are rare.
On this particular topic, I have to admit I am not very well educated, however, I do agree with you and can not wait to see Australia become a Republic.
I think a President is essential in the idea of our Nation become Independant. On the other hand, I do believe that the people should have more say in who is representing them as they do now. I think it is nice having representatives from every state and am not entirely sure that the President would be unbias about his sellection of Assembly members. I don't want to see him sitting at the head of a table with all his friends. This is not a social event but a running of a nation and should be given more serious representation.

I would love to join your guild, I'll be studying politics at the end of this year at Uni, so I would love to post a few questions for a debate as I learn.
As yet I'm not well educated on the ins and outs of government - I'm on the same level as those people who have an opinion on how the country should be run by telling you that 'I don't like what they're doing now' kind of arguement. (you'll see other posts in this guild about the stimulus package etc.)
I consider my politics to be socialist and republican. Taking the best of both worlds of free education and medicine with electing my own president.
The need for a republican guild will attract politically minded people, however my advice is to have a plan to keep people coming back like having structured political debates or something. Like Kixsy has said above me, I can say that I am not dropping by to this guild all the time because I simply cannot think of discussions to begin. Yet I do love putting in my opinion on everybody elses discussion thread.

Hey guys, I'm a mod at the guild, it's currently called ' The Jacobin Club ' and I'll provide a link at the bottom of the post. I'd send invites, but right now I'm uncertain about the guilds fate as things have gotten awfully quiet rather fast. http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewforum.php?f=338723Check it out, and I'll accept any applications asap. =)
