Who here actually enjoys the beauty that is presented in Chapter 4?

I've got to admit, chapter 4 isn't my overall favourite (that title belongs to chapter 5) but it provides an important insight into the complicated character of Doctor Manhattan. His dispassionate narrative seems at times blunt and obvious, but it's that lack of empathy that the reader latches onto and it makes them fill in the blanks themselves. It's as good as drawing attention to the important issues without saying them outright. Also, the jumping between times brings into issue causality and the small, seemingly insignificant occurences that shape our lives. What's more, it's a deeply philosophical chapter... so yeah, would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it! lol

(That said, the two people I've let borrow my copy have struggled at this chapter... my brother said it was boring, and read it in two sittings)

Chapter Four is flawless. By the end of it you get some insight into the person Manhattan became, from the person he was. Making a watch on Mars could be seen as the wish that he could go back and just be a scientist who enjoyed fixing watches. Liked how it all the pieces fit together, work together. Humanity doesn't. Humanity, in the form of what one considers important, love and friends, could just stand and watch him die, without any attempt of saving him. Helpless. His life, disintergrates both physically and mentally. How he put himself back together. How no one sees beyond the super powers he has.

His standing by Comedian in Vietnam, and allowing Comedian to carry out a murder, without intervening, could be seen as the exact reaction of those that watched him die in a timlocked box.

If someone you loved or cared for was in what seemed an impossible peril to get out of, would you try anything? Or just watch them die? You discover your helplessness in saving anyone. Morbid s**t though.

And Manhattan only did what he was told, his needs ethereal now, very cheap materialisticaly speaking. (Hope that is a word). He saw the world for what it was, that death, seen on a large scale can be looked upon with dissinterest. That we can hear about so much death, be so overwhelmed we can all switch off to the realities of war.

It explained why he had to go. Probably why Superman would eventually fly off as well, eventually coming to the same conclusions as Manhattans.

Edit: It was this chapter in particular that drew focus for me to a more to much larger questions. Although he says he is not God (and leaves the option that God exists), he goes off to become one. Does that mean he would be a better God than the one we have now. Because this one allows death and suffering. So, if I do have faith, should I question the motives of the one currently on offere.

Is Moore suggesting I should rethink God, and in his existence. If you go athiest is that it? Can you truly be an athiest knowing by definition there has to be a God not to believe in. Or doesnt it work that way? Can I dismiss scientific theory in just the same way? Argh.

Sorry to say, but it's been a while sense I read it... but I know It must be about Manhattan so: It's interesting to watch a man almost dieing then coming back to life the thrown power over atoms at... but he has no power over the human psyche... it also would show he is not God by showing he can be manipulated beyond his control... also in the scene in vietnam I thought God gives men free will maybe manhattan was thinking something along those lines after being worshiped, thought he might stop maybe IDK on that one at all though just an assumption or idea... also on the idea on what's a god, anything can be a god but usually forged from sin unlike God God.... and all manhattan is really is collected electrons held by force...
(all thoughts don't yell at me... plz!........btw I'm christian)
