Let the speculation about Shepherd Book's past begin!!!

I just hope our BDS gives us some insight. Don't let us down, Joss.

Hmm.... perhaps... he... used to be an operative?

I figure that Book used to be what the villain was, whom the Sheppherd himself described as a man of faith. Complete faith in the cause he fought for, a perfect world, despite the knowledge that the methods he used were utterly evil.
Until something broke that faith.

In the Operative's case, it was Mal and the signal. Maybe, for Book, it was that belief in "a power greater than men, a power that heals". Whatever it was, he broke from the Alliance just like this guy did. Faith without doubt tends to breed contempt once thwarted. And he became a Sheppherd.

i was so sad when he died because he is such a great character and i feel he really became part of the crew. i know everyone was devastated after wash's death, but i think it has kind of overshadowed the fact that book's death (though not as unexpected) was also a great tragedy. he was a nobel character and died a nobel death. i agree that he may have been an operative, it just seems like the most likely theory.

But, being the most likely theory, Joss would have gone in a completely different direction... somehow...

Who knows... If we get a sequal it could be all about Book's past, you know, posthumous like.

I just got to put out a little Book love. All the other threads are about how great the characters are, but this one seems to be about speculation. I must say that I love Book. He is an awesome character. I was so sad when he died. crying So, I just wanted to say that Book is awesome. I love the whole mystery of his background too. Its very intriguing.

I never really identified with Book...

I liked Book in that my mother taught me to be polite to clergymen even when I thought differently than they did. She says they can't help it that they've been indoctrinated from birth to that way of thinking...
Book's a little different though...like edgy sort of...

I think he was either with the Alliance for a while or he was involved in something even shadier than what Firefly usually gets up to. He knows an awful lot of strange stuff for a preacher.

I always read a lot of Dragonlance and Book reminded me of one of the characters, a cleric of Paladin. A kingt was saying in refernce to him that he was the kind of man who would ride into battle with while calling on his god.

I don't know, I just always kinda pictured Book as that type of guy. Sure kneecaps may not be battle, but it's the image, you know?

I really liked him to be honest and I was kinda disappointed in his death because I didn't think they used his character to the full extent. But that's to be expected when you're trying to put a TV show into a movie.
