I think that when she saw Mal in 'Heart of gold' she thought he had no feelings for her and gave up waiting for him? Either that or she thought he was losing interest and that was the last straw...
I think its a bit unfair of her to judge him on that personally... she goes off almost every episode to sleep with someone. He does it once and Boo Hoo. Double standards...

See... I took that episode differently. I think she left because he was going to tell her. For them to be together, she would have to stop working. Mal would want a wife, not a Companion, so to speak. And I don't think he could ask her to just stop, much as he dislikes her profession, because he respects her.

DrefanKearse See... I took that episode differently. I think she left because he was going to tell her. For them to be together, she would have to stop working. Mal would want a wife, not a Companion, so to speak. And I don't think he could ask her to just stop, much as he dislikes her profession, because he respects her. How can she have feelings for him and yet keep doing what she does? I didnt think women could be that cold...

Because what she does has nothing to do with love- she provides a service. You have to remember, a Companion is not a whore- she is more of a comcubine. With her job comes rank, respect, and wealth should she want it. It's nothing shameful for her to do.
But you can tell she loves him- in the Saffron episode, she threw him out of her rooms when he started talking abotu having children and a wife, and of course when she broke down.
She's also never made any promises to him, so she's not betraying him.

Exactly! It still hurt her to hell that he did it though, because she loves him. Which, might als obe why she left- she might not have been able to face that kind of pain again.
But it probably hurts him to see her going off to work each day, hence the strong ragging on it. He didn't much care that the other women were working girls, if you didn't notice.

I dont think he disaproved because they didnt have much choice... Inara on the other hand could do anything. She is smart, cool, and if all else fails in her job hunting, she is gorram beautiful.

But Companion is an upper class job. It's highly respected- there don't appear to be many jobs liek that that aren't government controlled. Plus, as a Companion she can travel where she wishes.

Well she wasn't aware that she'd fall for him as hard as she did. At the beginning at least, it was simply a business relationship. But while it's not hard to fall for Mal, she didn't plan on it. And I think she left because she realized that her reaction to his sleeping with Nandi would put a strain on their 'stricly businesslike relationship', and begin to affect her work. Also, she may have felt that he chose Nandi over her and didn't really want Inara.
