In the first great clash between the forces of Creation and the forces of Destruction, there were those spirits who refused to fight for either. In the wake of this great battle, their non-commital was viewed as a betrayal, and they were forced out of Paradise. The descendants of these fallen angels were the peris.

As a consequence of their removal from Paradise, the peris lost their immortality, although their lifespan is still much greater than that of Man. In order to regain immortality, a peri must deliver unto God the three things most dear to His heart:

1. The last libation from a heart that bleeds and breaks in its cause.
2. A precious sigh of pure, self-sacrificing love.
3. A tear, warm and meek, that dews the repentant sinner's cheek.

The Peris were generally benevolent creatures, who (despite their miniscule size) make it their business to defend humans against wicked monsters, such as the divs.

As descendants of celestial beings, many peris had supernatural powers. These powers included shape-shifting (of themselves and humans), invisibility, the ability to carry heavy burdens as if they were weightless, and the ability to turn creatures into stone. They also had a natural affinity to magic, therefore having the potential to become powerful spell casters.

Both the peris and their enemies, the divs, lived beyond the edge of the Earth. They resided in the land of Jinnestan, within the mountains of Kaf, insurmountable chrysolite peaks that surround the earth in a ring.

The divs and the peris were constantly at war. While the peris are petite, beautiful fairy-like beings, the divs are gigantic, deformed, monstrous humanoids with many tusks and horns. And these hulking brutes were often not alone in their persecution of the peris; often they were allied with evil warlocks and all kinds of monsters.

The peris were no match for the divs. If a peri was caught, the div would lock them in iron cages from the tops of the tallest trees in the land. There, the captures peri's comrades would bring him/her fine perfumes to dine on, and comfort them while they searched for a heroic human to come to their rescue.

Roksana relaxed in the shade of a particularly tall tree, one leg serving as a resting place for her arm while the other dangled against the tree's rough trunk. She observed the humans toiling with their heavy baskets of pistachios without interest. There would be time to help them later. Right now she was busy, basking in the warm, delicious scents of the Persian countryside.

"This is what life is about. Heaven has nothing on this," she thought as a satisfied smile played across her lips.

Not that she had ever been there. Her ancestors had been expelled from "paradise" millennia ago. Roksana had not even visited the Jewelled City of Jinnestan, although her mother used to speak of it fondly. Her parents had fled their adopted home after a particularly nasty invasion of divs.

As far as Roksana was concerned, her parents had made the right choice. Earth had so many delights to experience! The alluring aromas of its nuts and fruits, the beautiful patterns on the clothing the humans draped themselves in (which she herself had chosen to mimic), the music of the santur and the sitar! The peris back in Jinnestan were missing out.

...............

Roksana drifted alongside an elderly human woman, the energy of her wings crackling invisibly behind her. The woman carried a large jug of water on her shoulder, and was obviously struggling a great deal to keep it aloft. Roksana used the tip of her little finger to gently lift the weight of the jug off the frail, ancient shoulders. The old woman's wrinkled brow knit briefly in confusion and surprise, but she slowly carried on her way.

At last they approached their destination, a fired-clay brick house on the edge of a small town. The distinct odor of not-too-fresh fish quickly reached Roksana's nostrils. The human gasped as the water jug suddenly regained its full weight, and tumbled to the earthen floor.

Cursing, Roksana hastily pulled a perfumed rag over her nose and dove for the water jug. She caught it by the rim just before it smashed and gently lowered it the rest of the way down, letting some of the water slosh into the dust so her quick intervention wouldn't be as noticeable.

"This is why I don't live by the Caspian Sea," Roksana grumbled as she flew away from the domicile. "Why did her family have to purchase fish from the market today of all days?"

Dusk was setting as she wafted towards the orchard she usually spent the night in. Scanning the vibrantly coloured horizon, she noticed a dull glimmer radiating from a tree nearby. Her curiousity getting the best of her, she soared in for a closer look.

Nestled in the crook of one branch was a peri. Roksana gasped inwardly. Even though she knew many had fled along with her parents, she seldom saw her own people. And none as close to death as this one.

The male peri's tanned cheeks were sunken, and his once golden curls had turned a rather nauseating shade of off-white. The energy of his wings was sporadic, sometimes coming in bright flares and then dulling down into a barely visible burn.

As Roksana approached, he turned his glazed eyes towards her and a look of horror spread across his face. He tried to raise his hand in a feeble gesture to flee, but he was too weak. And too late.

For as Roksana approached, a dark ominous shape stepped out from the concealing shade. Three sets of horns glinted in the fading light of the setting sun. An abnormally long arm extended, and the creature's long clawed fingers clasped round Roksana's tiny body. Letting out a short barking laugh, the monster lifted her up to his face so she could see her captor.

"A div," was all she had time to think before the foul stench of the evil being's breath knocked her senseless.

...............

The blistering heat is what caused Roksana to awaken. At first she blinked her eyes groggily, but quickly snapped to attention when she realised how badly amiss something was. Standing up wobbily, she reached out and touched the iron bars surrounding her. She quickly withdrew her hand, crying out in pain. The bars were extremely hot!

Suddenly, it realization hit her that the floor too, was indeed blisteringly hot as well. Jumping up in hurt surprise, she hovered there. Twisting around, she surveyed her surroundings. And wished she hadn't.

Laying off to the side of the large iron cage was the peri she had seen the night before, now no more than a husk. His brown skin looked like rose-petals dried in the sun. A morbid curiousity overcame her and she reached out to touch him. The slight pressure from her finger caused the dessicated shell to dissolve into dust.

Roksana began to sob. The div had captured this poor peri, and then used him as bait to capture her as well! And to make things worse, no one had come to comfort him! No peris had brought him sweet perfumes and helped keep him cool during his captivity? Where were the others? Why hadn't she seen any for so long?

"Stop that!" Roksana scolded herself and tried to calm down. "This peri was just unlucky. That won't happen to you. Someone will find you."

Unwrapping the shawl around her waste, Roksana draped it over her head to protect her from the glaring sunlight. Hovering over the floor, she gazed across the landscape from her tree-top prison.

"Someone will find me..."

Name: Autena; Autena is a female Persian name meaning "God hears me." Her previous name meant "bright." We'll see which one is more accurate this time around.

Gender: Female. (Originally my plan was to have her genderless, as that matches my perception of heavenly beings, but traditionally peris are portrayed as female so I decided to go with that.)

Hair: Autena's hair is honey-brown and naturally curly. In her past, she wore it just above the shoulders, to match the style of the humans around her. I'm not sure yet how she'll wear it now.
(Peri are supposed to be very beautiful. Being a blond, I tend to think of blond hair as the most beautiful. However I realised the ancient Persians probably pictured them with raven black hair. I felt honey brown was a decent compromise.)

Eyes: Her eyes are the same brilliant blue as the sky after a shower.

Skin: Autena's skin is a pale brown.

Height: Peris are supposedly quite petite, especially in comparison to the gigantic divs! In fact, next to them their small stature can quickly become exaggerated. In comparison to a human however, Autena is not exceptionally tiny. When full grown, she'll be about the size of your average ten year old girl.

Unique features: Autena's wings are her crowning glory. They are made of beams of energy, and increase or decrease in size depending on how she is feeling. Certain extreme emotions can cause colour to play across them as well (although that seldom occurs).

Personality: Autena has a friendly disposition. She cares about others, and enjoys the satisfaction she gains from fulfilling other people's needs. However, she cares about herself more. If a task is too arduous, or starts to bore her she will lose interest and move on. She won't ever purposely insult someone, and she most likely will not understand if someone becomes offended by her disinterest. Autena will get cranky if things don't go her way, but with that short attention span, she won't stay upset for very long. Like other peri, she can be very evasive when it comes to taking a stand on something.

Likes: Autena glories in the nature around her. You'll often find her relaxing up in a tree, enjoying the beauty of her surroundings. She appreciates music, especially that of stringed instruments, although she is not patient enough to become proficient at it herself. She LOVES fresh fruit, flowers, nuts, perfumes and spices.

Dislikes: Autena basically dislikes anything with a strong, unpleasant smell, especially uncooked meat and fish (whether cooked or not). These things cause her to temporary lose her powers, as well as make her nauseous. She also rather phobic of iron, as a reaction to her tragic end in the iron cage. It doesn't cause her any physical distress, just mental discomfort.

Outfit: Autena prefers loose flowing clothing, such as skirts, dresses, robes, shawls and scarfs. She also has a fondness for patterns, especially flower motifs. She will often wear a few pieces of gold or jade jewelery.

Possible Powers:
Pause: The only enchantment Autena would not have to study to learn. Its effect would only be temporary, only lasting a few seconds; just enough time to pick someone up and move them from harm's way.

Heavy Lifting: Very heavy things become virtually weightless under her touch.

Invisibility: Autena can become invisible to human beings who do not have the gift of the Third Eye. She cannot become invisible to other fa'e.

Shape shifting: Like humans, ever peri had different talents. Shape shifting was not really Autena's forte. She can temporarily turn other people into small birds, and she can transform herself into a small ball of light, but that's as far as her power extends.

Autena may also learn other enchantments as she grows older, if she can ever concentrate long enough!

Name: Dorielf, often called Dori.

Gender: Female

Age: 20

Height and Weight: 5'4 and a little on the heavy side. That's all she'll say.

Appearance: Dori's sandy blond hair is cut rather boyishly, and creates a nice frame around her large gray eyes. Her skin is almost transparently pale. Dori's favorite attire is a red pinstripe shirt under a darker red suit, finished off with a fashionable neck ruffle. She wears a silver promise ring from long ago on her right hand...

Personality: Dorielf is a worrywort. She is constantly anxious about one thing or another. She is also shy when she first meets someone, but once she gets to know you it's hard to shut her up. She is quite naive and never suspects anyone on trying to harm her.

Abilities: Dori has a very mild ability to sense evil. For example, being in a room where an extremely violent act occured, or touching an object used in occult practices, will give her a headache.

Peri on Wikipedia

Basically all the information on the peri that you can find on the internet is identical to what is found on Wikipedia. As you can probably tell I've changed things slightly to make them work for me better.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/13692995/fairy-tales-their-origin-and-meaning

This was very helpful in supplementing the sparse information I found. If you have the time, browse through it. ((Warning, it is very long))
