Heya one and everyone! the Leszi here (how're ya doin'?) talking 'bout what gets our sheep... erm.. goat... something..
As you probably know, Tekko this year was held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center here in good ol' Pittsburgh. It's our new home and there's plenty of room to expand and make nice in, ya know? Two things though...
A: The Convention Center (D.L.L.C.C. for long) is staffed by the local something-something union... Now, this doesn't mean anything to con-goers--in fact, it probably would be good for them since the union guys would be like extra staff, but for me and the tech crew.. crying ... I couldn't really raise a finger this year! If sound needed to be run-Unions, if speakers needed moved-Unions, if there's a cord lying there all lonesome-like waiting to be wrapped-Unions.. I felt kinda useless and as a result, I tended to wander off to Con-Ops to see if anything needed to be done. This was a big change for me since last year (Tekko 'o cool I was one of three staffers on the whole tech crew...
It's annoying, but regardless, I'll just have to find myself a new niche.. maybe I can study up on the light board and run lights next year or something....
B: No Pocky! The C.C. has a contract out with a specific company that handles ALL food sold on site. This means that vendors could not sell Pocky, Ramune, etc at their booths this year... Now, there WWAAAASSSS a loophole... That restricts food sold within the Convention Center, but not OUTSIDE the convention center.. There was one guy who was getting around this by selling "Pocky Vouchers", not Pocky.. Then con-goers could pick up theirs outside or at the Westin....
...the Leszi didn't get to stock up on Pocky this year.... *pout*
However, as far as I was concerned, the actual CON was cool as ever, eh?

I acutally freaked out when someone said that this Tekko was going to be the last one. I happened to be part of a photo shoot at the time. The guys at deathcom, looked at me like I was nuts, and directly told me that "no, this isn't the last one. Where the hell did you hear that!?"
I immediately pointed to the guy behind me, who had told me. His reply: "Hey, I only told you what I heard. I didn't come up with it."

Yeah people kept telling me that before tekko and I was like WHAT? Where did you hear that. Apparently the rumor started with someone from security telling people there was a problem with taxes. She was spreading rumors like a wildfire and I kept telling everyone that it wasn't happening. If it was gonna happen you would have heard something before the last tekko was over.

Not to mention, they couldn't give the "Best In Show" Award because they're promised free admission to Tekko next year. LOLOL.

So... I take it none of you were at closing ceremonies..?
It was discussed... There was a number that we had to reach and we came really close.... Jim Gogal (Tekko Pres.) was onstage talking in front of everyone that was at closing and he was saying how this was going to be the last Tekko..... right hand up... he even handed the mic off to the Tekko treasurer who verified it. She looked like she was about to cry... Doc Andy even started playing the Optimus Prime's Death Theme over the speakers....

Luckily that was just a joke they were playing on the other staff. It's about time Jim got them all back. I've heard the Union stories, too. Especially from people that ran cons at the ExpoMart. I wish I would have known the Pocky situation at last week. Just down the street from the hotel is a shop named Lotus Foods. They have a whole shelf with Pocky, Pretz and other candy and snacks. Actually all the Asian stores have Pocky. At least the ones I shop at.

Okay, I asked about it on the official tekko site and this is the reply I got back:
"No. Its not. There was a prank pulled (you can read about it in some of the feedback threads) about it being the last one, followed by a "Gotcha" from the president. However, this was done because it almost was the last Tekko. But thanks to attendee turnout, it wasn't. The "gotcha" was pulled to show the attendees just how close and how real the situation was. This way we can hopefully band everyone together for greater support next year.
Basically, it was a wakeup call. We, as the enjoyers of Tekko, need to promote it like crazy, bring in as many friends as possible, build a community and very importantly, pre-register for next year! Anything we can do to help.
But no. It's not the last. And we have to make sure there ISN'T a last, ever. It's up to us to make that happen."
There were over 3,200 people there... and it was said that there was a 24% increase in terms of attendance. Part of the problem was that there were 3 other conventions that weekend... so attendance wasn't were it could have been.

Wow! I'm impressed biggrin I think it was a good turnout because it was in the city where people could take a bus to the hotel/convention center or drive. razz Though...I'm upset at how much the parking fees were. $20/day! o.O That's insane and a true ripoff. crying It's like...where does that money go?? Those places look so old and run down! Even the machines who dispense the tickets are ancient. Where do they put that $20/day?!?!
My friend and I had my mom drive us and drop us off. XD So it was worth the stay. razz

The city's been dying for years and they try to leech money out of everyone.... in any way possible because almost all extra cash goes to taxes. (I'm not joking either... buinesses in Pa are among the most taxed in the country... and the local taxes in Pittsburgh make it worse... I had actually done some rescent research on this.... -_-)

Yes, the Tekko is now running into the problems that the Otakon is, the unions having to do all the moving and set up of things. I never liked unions, surprise there was a problem with a paper towel dispenser in the men's room and I took care of that. Robbed a union guy's job for free. biggrin
The only reason I can say why the Tekko barely made it this years is it's the economy. More people with less money to spend on con trips, just look at me and I may not make my Otakon trip this year. Tekko may be my only con trip this year, the cost of parking was average, I've seen it higher elsewhere. But if you didn't mind a walk I know where parking didn't cost all that much.
Hotels are my biggest problem. I do not like them, any hotel I've stayed at has in some way botched it and over charged me or ripped me off. Maybe next year I'll stay at my sister's place in Pittsburgh, she only lives about 3 miles away from the DLLCC.

LOL The poor union guy. razz LOL
Mmmm well, any true con-goer usually saves up throughout the year so they have enough for the con. Not to mention, when you book the hotel, you make sure they give you the tekko discount. (Which the past 3 years I have not had any problems with with all the hotels I've stayed at with friends) And we pack all my friends and I together in the room so this year only cost us $60/person for the entire weekend. biggrin Which was very affordable if you ask me. biggrin As for parking, my mom drove me and my friend because we had way too much stuff to drag around. AND I didn't want to pay the parking fee, so she was nice and dropped us off. biggrin You just need to be a smart con go-er. razz Pre-reg to get cheap entrance fees, sign up early for hotel rooms to get the Tekko Discount rate, and save up over the year. biggrin
