Ah, good old Gaia. "If we pretend there are no problems, no one will ever notice them!" At least they're staying true to form.

Any chance you can post it? (Or just link to an external site with the screen shot, so you don't offend the Gaia gods?)

It isn't the first time a dev account has been taken over (or w/e happened). There have always been instances where there have been holes on the site.

The oldest one I can remember was the PM called "Hey, look at this" or whatever and when you clicked it, you were sent to a phishing page and the PM was then sent to everyone on your friendlist thanks to the @friends feature we had at the time.

The next major one I can remember is the cookie stealing incident and people were using mod accounts to post inappropriate images. This was also done with average user accounts.

I'm not sure if we can add the subeta incident or not. I think that's more of a user error. The second one that I'm not sure was a security issue or not but you used to be able to see a user's gold count.

Then there is Towns. But someone could write a 15 page paper on that one.

It must have happened during one of the times I wasn't feeling in a "Gaia mood" for three months straight, what exactly is this "Subeta incident" you're talking about?

I'm not sure how it happen either the owner of Subeta created a meme item. Of course, that created some drama with a few sites and there was some backlash for it. The site owner did the most unprofessional and least tactful thing and argued back with these people. He egged these people on. So, this group started really harassing the site and either he gave them the passwords or they were able to get them through phishing. Anyways, these people figured to use these usernames and passwords to get into other accounts besides the subeta ones. I know that encyclopedia dramatica isn't the best reference but you can probably find out more about it there.

I think Gaia made an announcement at some point for people to change their password. I'm not sure if that event is what made the decision for Gaia to create their own meme items. The site held together better than subeta. Mostly because this site has a bit more backing than Subeta. Although, it was funny watching as people spammed the mod irc channel and saying it was hacked and such. That was in the GCD. The thing I wanted to know was why? I mean, that's where all the cult followers hang out. Chances are, they already knew about that irc channel.

Anon did hack Subeta and had a list of username/password combos for the members there (apparently the encryption security on Subeta was terrible) and many member accounts on Subeta got hacked.

Then, I think a few months later, the list got posted on one of the *chans (people were saying it was 420chan, but I don't know for sure). Apparently there were a significant number of Gaians on Subeta who used the same username/password combo for both sites, and so channers came and hacked those Gaia accounts, and chaos ensued. In the GCD at least.

Supposedly that's more or less what happened.
