Night. The time where the stars and moon came out. The time where mostly all was deathly still, silent. It was during night where all should be sleeping except for the night critters, who slept during the day. But Lex was unable to sleep. He was tired, yes, from a long day of traveling but sleep just did not wish to come. The stallion groaned as he pulled himself to his legs. His limbs were sore and tired from the amount of hours he spent walking, continuously searching. His gray eyes looked up at the elm tree he had stopped under, he gave a small shake of his head and left. A swift walk to the stream he had located earlier and then back to his tree should hopefully cause him to become more tired and if not, it was sure to provide a nice time to think.
Lex blinked sleepily at the way ahead, it was different in the dark. And so quiet. His ears perked at the slight sounds of an owl hooting, possibly it was searching for food. Or maybe the owl only wanted to stretch its wings. It didn't matter much. He continued through the soft grass, it was wet still from the small rainstorm that occured during the evening. Lex chuckled at the thought of the rain. It came as a surprise, he had still been traveling when he started getting wet. By the time he found a suitable shelter, he was soaked. He must of been quite a sight!
His laughter seemed so shattering amongst this quiet. So loud. Unsuitable for the night, where mostly all were asleep. As he should be. He'd sleep in tomorrow or he'd be sleepy in the morning. Lex wondered some days why he still did this. He was hopeful in the beginning and never imagined his search would be long and tedious. Lex had thought in a few days he'd locate his mother but no it had been weeks, months since he last saw his home. He sighed.
How was father doing? What if Taigi returned in his absence? And Nikolai, he wondered how his baby brother was. Thinking about the other members of his immediate family caused a squirming in his stomach to unfold. It was a feeling of guilt, no word to them for many months. What his family must be thinking! He was homesick too. But, Lex wanted to finish his search. His search for his wayward mother. He was determined back then, in his mind he saw himself meeting his mother and demanding of her answers to questions he wished to ask and getting to know her better. Why did she not visit often, even when he and his brothers were foals? Why had she completely vanished when he and his brothers grew to adulthood?
Did she not love them? He frowned. It felt like decades ago since he last thought on the questions he yearned to ask her. Now, his only want was to see her. His need for answers was pressing but not as pressing as his want to see her again, even if it may be the last time. Her decision to travel must be important to her, obviously more so than her sons. Back then, Lex wanted to persuade her to come home but now, Lex was less inclined to do so.
He paused. What had she looked like? He recalled that she was a pure unicorn and dark as the night sky, with eyes he inherited. And then there was fog or mist but what did that have to do with her? He tried to remember and failed.
The red and black stallion looked up from the ground and blinked in surprise. In his brooding over his family, his mother and his search, Lex had hardly noticed he had reached the stream. He took a drink. Strangely, he now felt more awake than anything else. His eyes were alert and his limbs more relaxed. Lex looked down at his reflection, thinking again. He could leave this place and head off to the mountains. It was likely more of a challenge in the dark but if he wasn't going to sleep than what else was he to do? He continued to consider his options, gray eyes locked on the stream.

It was a dark night, just like any other night. Raina was traveling in the night she was going back home to the mountains where she was there to her own seclusions. She had moved to an opposite side away from her father, she grew tired of his antics. Her mother she had just gone to see and comfort. She didn’t know were she was headed though, her mind seemed off. It was tragic of her parents break up, but she supposed it was for the best. She had always been quiet and guarded but now around males it seemed to have grown to a bashful awkward silence. Her light lavender eyes peered around as she felt water fall from the skies…rain. She should’ve stayed home and comforted her mother. She knew how much her mother was afraid of rain.
It was a beautiful night; except for she was all wet now. And it was getting quite chilly. She looked around, her ears alert as she walked cautiously. She didn’t want to get snuck up on. She was more cautious then a frightened deer sometimes. She couldn’t help it, she was like that since a foal. She also didn’t talk much, but that was also her way. Sometimes things were better left unsaid and for her that was simple.
As she moved forward she could smell another near but not sure where, the rain kind of through her senses off unless the other was right in front of her. She sighed heavily as her eye lids grew heavy. She moved forward to find that there was a small shelter up ahead but she saw movement and stopped in her place. She lowered her head, and squinted trying to see if it was a potential danger. As she watched she could see it was a male unicorn, like herself. He was super dark so she could hardly see him. She walked a little closer to say hi. Then she reconsider, she was unsure of herself of having pleasant conversations. She sighed before starting to walk to a tree she had seen that would provide some shelter before she moved to the mountains; she thought a break sounded nice. Her mouth twisted in second thoughts wondering if she could accompany him, but she figured he’d want his own solitude. He must be getting ready to take a nap, she convinced herself so she laid herself down next to the tree and rested her head on its bark. Her ears still up and listening for anything…odd.

It was decided. He'd stay till the first rays of dawn came and then leave for the mountains. Or maybe he should leave for the mountains. Lex groaned. He could not make up his mind. He was so sure in his decision and then he'd think it over again and change his mind. He should try and sleep because it was dark and it was harder to sleep during the day. But he might find a cave up there in the mountains, a cave which should be dark. Though how far was the mountains?
He squinted. It was difficult to tell in the dark. But then if it was difficult, it must mean the mountains were still far. It could take days before he got to them. Therefore, it made sense to try and sleep now. But he wasn't even tired! Lex paced in the grass, by the stream. Okay. He'd try and sleep once more and than if he was unsuccessful, he was off. Lex nodded and went towards where he had been laying down before.
Who or what was that? He crept closer, cautiously. No use in startling whoever it was or waking him or her up. It could be a dangerous encounter but Lex did not think this other was dangerous. He wasn't getting any bad vibes but he had been wrong before, you couldn't judge someone merely by their appearance.
He stepped on a twig. Hearing the snap as his cloven hoof broke it, Lex winced. He never was the most graceful stallion. He waited to see if the other heard him. He crept nearer. It was another unicorn. A mare. Had she been here earlier? Perhaps he missed her. No. He shook his head. Lex wasn't that unobservant. Was she awake?

Raina was steadily falling asleep. She had heard movement from the other she had noticed earlier. Her ears flickered as the male seemed to be getting curious and creeping toward her. She knew he was getting closer but when he snapped the twig she snorted and her eyes fluttered open. Lavender eyes stared at the male, lazily she got to her feet and stumbled towards him.
"It's late," she muttered, watching him carefully. "And you're out parading around," she whispered. She sighed softly looking at him, she didn't know who he was but she decided she would start a conversation with the male that felt like coming to find out what she was.
"I'm Raina," she introduced speaking in the same soft voice.

He stepped back, away from her, as she got up to her legs. Did he wake her up? His insides squirmed guiltily. He hadn't meant to wake her up. But maybe he didn't wake her up? She could of been awake all along! But only one way to find out, he'd ask and well if he did he could feel more guilty later.
"I didn't wake you, did I?" He tilted his head to the side, hopeful that he didn't. She had interesting eyes, not the usual blue, green, brown or even gray that he had seen before.
The way she spoke, it was quiet. Lex was much louder. It was different. Others he had met, they weren't soft-spoken either. He couldn't remember his brothers having a quiet voice either. Maybe it was because it was night. Better not to disturb more animals.
"Was I that loud?" He chuckled, sheepishly. "I tried very hard to walk elegantly and silently. I guess I failed, miserably." Lex knew he wasn't quiet but he had tried hard. He needed more practice.
"Like rain. Well almost." He grinned. "It's a cool name." Lex nodded. "I'm Lex. Short and easy to remember. Well, hopefully easy." Still so quiet.
"You live here?" He questioned.

He was full of all sorts of questions. She smiled lightly and shook her head, "You didn't wake me, its raining, I hardle ever sleep when it rains." she added in the same hushed whisper.
She shook her head and laughed softly, "No I'm just quiet." She coughed and did a little -a hem- before watching him carefully. Her vocal chordes weren't strong enough to talk loud. Though it was better now then before. He seemed like a very nice, young gentleman.
She nodded, "Exactly, thank you." she smiled. "Lex...tis' easy. Pleasure to meet you, Lex." She was tired but now she had company, and she was liking it. She didn't like being alone, in the dark and especially in the rain.
"I don't...just traveling, you?"

She could smile. That was good. Lex had been growing nervous. He never dealt with someone quiet before, he had been unsure whether she was friendly. But she was. At least she appeared to be.
He grinned and laughed too. It didn't matter if she was more soft-spoken than anyone he could remember, she was nice and friendly.
He was relieved he didn't wake Raina up, he didn't like disturbing others unless they wanted to be disturbed. "Sleeping in the rain can be challenging. Especially when it comes all of a sudden and you have no shelter. That happened to me." He admitted. His body was dryer than it was early though he was still damp. "Thunderstorms especially dampen spirits, mine anyway, and sometimes there's lightning. Which I find cool, when I'm a safe distance away from it." He chuckled.
So Raina was a traveler, just like him. Lex was curious as to where she was traveling, where she had traveled and what her reasons for traveling were, but he didn't want to appear too pushy. It was difficult not to inquire.
"I'm traveling too. To the mountains this time." He nodded towards the direction of the mountains. "I was thinking of leaving tonight but that might be too dangerous. Hard to accomplish in the dark."

She nodded, “I like listening to the rain and watching the lightning…it’s kind of pretty and dangerous at the same time.” She started thinking for a moment, “My mother is a different story however, she hates rain. Has…panic attacks?” She thought it was a bit interesting that he was a traveler as well. What was even more peculiar was he was going to the same location. Well some what. The mountain range was huge. She had a particular spot where she went to where a river trailed through. It was a plateau in the mountains; it was tough to get too, probably too hard in the rain. The slickness of the water would make it easy to slip on the rocks and break a leg, no horse could recover from that.
“I am going to the mountains as well,” she nodded. “I live up there for the most time…I only come down to see my mother occasionally. It is very peaceful up there.” The dark male seemed to be very cautious of what he was saying which she found kind of cure. It was as if he were trying not to offend her. But that would take a lot for anyone to do.
“I believe it might be too dangerous, just because the water will make it easier to slip. I planned going tomorrow, it would probably be safer…and you can actually see.” She smirked. “If you like we can travel together, until we must part ways?” She never had a companion to travel with her before. If he declined she would understand and make no fret about it. She was used to traveling alone.

He nodded in agreement. When Raina spoke of her mother he felt frozen as he thought of his mother. Did she like the rain or was she afraid of it? Lex couldn't imagine her fearing it or anything, if she did than how did she manage to survive on her own? Unless she traveled with others, others she deemed unappropriate for her sons to ever know of. Nah, she hardly cared for him or his brothers or even dad, it was doubtful that she would care about their opinions of who she corresponded with or what she did. Maybe his memories of her weren't as clear anymore, it had been a long time. Too long.
"Panic attacks? How horrible." Though he never saw someone experiencing a panic attack before, Lex thought it sounded like an unpleasant event. Hard to get through even. As he was unfamiliar with panic attacks he didn't know what else to say, he was uncomfortable because he didn't want to say anything remotely idiotic or even rude and offensive to Raina. He liked making and keeping friends not making and than messing it all up.
Lex blinked in surprise. "You're kidding, right?" He laughed in a joking way. How coincidental was that? He and Raina were both heading to the mountains. Likely not specifically in the same area of the mountains considering how vast they were but still they had the same destination. With Raina stating how she lived up in the mountains most of the time, well, it was convenient. He made the right choice to come back here and not move on. He wondered what she thought of it.
"Yeah." He agreed. He was too much of a fool to even consider going up into the mountains. Lex forgot about the rain and how it would make everything slippery and harder to get to places. He did acknowledge the fact about how his vision would not be as great in the dark though but he still was a fool, a rather stupid fool.
"Yes!" He completely agreed with her suggestion, exactly what he was thinking. But he coughed after wards, embarrassed by his outburst. "I.....think it would be good, on my part, if we traveled together. Likely not for long, probably till we get up there but it would be good to know of the best places to go. Do you know where most inhabitants go in the mountains? Or even live? Unless you've never met others up there?" Lex asked. He wanted to know where most horses lived or even other animals.
But he wondered. What would he find up there? Her? Or nothing? Like always.

She nodded, “It’s like she goes into shock…really. She becomes motionless and what not…then she just freaks out.” She remembered the first time she had witnessed this. It was when she was a foal, she had never seen her mother so terrified. It had made Raina scared. Their father had to comfort the foals and their mother. Once Raina understood what it actually was she would comfort her mom. Though in thunder and in the rain it was nearly impossible. It wouldn’t stop her from trying however.
Raina shook her head, “Not kidding,” she grinned. She started thinking about her first venture to the mountains. She thought it was so beautiful, tranquil…peaceful. She never wanted to leave it, but she did to go see her mother. She was all that mattered to her anymore. She had no love life, no other family and no real friends.
She didn’t know he had actually planned to go up to the mountains. It was a rather stupid decision, but she wouldn’t judge him. Heck, she didn’t even know he would try the dangerous venture. Not to say one couldn’t do it, it would just be very tedious to undergo.
The female thought his outburst was kind of cute, she couldn’t help bit smile. She was disappointed by the statement afterwards but there was nothing she could do. He had his own destination to go to. She nodded in agreement. “Sort of…my spots sort of secluded from the rest. There are a series of plateaus and caves over the ridge of mine. Not many cross the ridge, because its pretty steep…but its doable. I think some are just lazy,” she chuckled. “That’s okay with me though. I haven’t met others…I just hear and see them.” She smiled gently at the darker male. He was quite nice, different from her. But different was always good.

Wow. The first word that came to him when he thought about Raina's mother and her panic attacks. They sounded extreme. "I've never seen it happen to anyone. A panic attack." Lex admitted. But he never wanted to see someone experience it. It was probably painful, both physically and emotionally and he wasn't quite sure how he would handle it. He wondered how Raina and her family managed it. They were likely close to one another. He smiled. Though his family were not as close, Lex was content seeing happy families. Families who were close.
So she prefers seclusion. He appreciated seclusion, having grown up in a forest. It was quiet and peaceful usually. Though with all the traveling he had been doing lately, Lex liked staying near populous areas more. He grew tired of his loneliness and staying closer to other animals, horses included, allowed him some interaction with them. Least he didn't have to talk to himself.
"I'll do it." He grinned. "And I'll let them all know it's quite possible unless they wish to remain lazy. Maybe some are scared, if it's as steep as you say." He believed her though, about the steepness and the possibility of laziness. A waste of time if some were lazy, what if they rarely left their home even? Lex needed to be sure. He had to find others who saw the regulars of the mountains a lot of the time, those would be the ones who would spot newcomers to the area. Like her.
"You're leaving early in the morning?" Lex asked. If she was than he should try and sleep so that he didn't slow her down tomorrow. Best to be well rested than not rested at all.

Although they were close at one point, Raina’s family was far from close. She regarded her sister as a tramp for sleeping around when she wasn’t lifemated. She figured it was her father’s ideals that got her in that one. Her parents were separated. She no longer saw nor spoke to her father and had no intentions too. She hardly contacted her mother anymore. Her voice started to feel raspy and pained her to open her mouth. She shuddered as she kept quiet now. It was too much; she wasn’t used to speaking so much at one time. It was good to strengthen her chords but when she over did it, she couldn’t speak for a week.
She smiled and nodded. “Sorry….my voice…it hurts,” she whispered. She tilted her head at him, remembering why she had stayed secluded. When her voice hurt it actually hurt. She could feel it every time she swallowed. She just nodded simply, as he said he would tell them its possible to cross the ridge. She nodded again, she would leave tomorrow, she only looked at him sympathetically. She didn’t want to use her voice anymore and sleep sounded nice…very nice. Though she couldn’t remember the last time she slept near another male. She thought it was somewhat hysterical for some reason. She motioned to the ground, again under the tree. She had forgotten he had sought shelter in a nearby cave. She figured this would be the most comfortable until tomorrow. There was probably seven hours till dawn. It would be a good rest and her throat should be feeling better by then. She simply looked at Lex as he awaited for his verbal reply as she was simply quiet now.

Was something wrong? Lex watched as Raina shuddered. Something he said? Or did? Lex's mouth had gotten him in trouble before, this might be an occasion where he upset someone. Lex nervously waited for a response. Any response. Raina was not answering anything he said and it worried him. He disliked worrying. He did it more now than he did as a foal. Lex thought as an adult he understood and learned more. Worries came and went, as did many things. Inevitable, Lex supposed.
Oh. So that was it. Lex thought Raina was rather quiet by the sound of her voice but he never thought it was difficult for her to speak. He kept on talking and talking, she responded and now her voice was tender. Lex felt guilty but he hadn't known or realized. However, it still didn't lessen the guilt.
"It's all right." He nodded. "Rest will be good." Of course that was a given but it spilled out from his mouth. A yawn came then. He laughed it off. "Guess I'm not as awake as I thought it was." Over the time spent speaking with Raina, Lex had been growing tired. He hadn't noticed it till now. But it was better to be tired, easier to fall asleep than it was when he was wide awake. Some nights had been downright awful for him but Lex thought this night would be good. Now.
Lex eyed the trees. Raina had found one, he noticed, as he saw her lay under one. That tree seemed suitable enough, he looked at one a little further away from Raina's. It was only for a night so it didn't have to be the best looking tree, it just needed to do its job. Provide shelter and something to lean against. He settled under his tree and looked back over at Raina.
"All settled?" He smiled. "See you in the morning." Lex couldn't wait till they reached the mountains. It was a new place and it gave him hope. He would wake up early for this and if he slept in, Lex hoped he wasn't left behind. Though, he doubted Raina would. She was so nice to him.
"Sleep well."

The female watched the male, she didn’t want to him to think that she was mad at him. However, that seemed to be the impression that she was getting. It was a mix of shock, worry and nervousness upon his face. However she knew nothing was coming out. She would start to wince if she talked now. So she only blinked at him, but obviously comprehending what the male said. That’s what was important, she could always nod yes and no if it came down to it.
She didn’t mind his talking and talking. She actually kind of enjoyed it. Just because she wasn’t able to yet didn’t mean she was resentful or guilty for not. Some were just born different, and it just made them unique. It was almost the perfect relationship unless he expected her to talk as much as him. Plus the talking was better than the silence that she was used to. It was nice to hear nature’s wonders but more than often it got lonely.
Raina nodded in agreement, she couldn’t help but smile. It was kind of cute. She shook her head, she too could feel her eyelids trying to pull her off to slumber but she wouldn’t be rude and go lay down and fall asleep until he was comfortable. She was taught better than that by her mother. She watched him simply as his gaze moved to the trees. He was looking for another tree to sleep under. She half smiled, how chivalrous. She found the notion quite charming.
She nodded again when he asked if she was settled. He was perhaps the first male that she had med that was the nicest. He also seemed to have general concern for her well being. It was a possibility that he was only going to use her for her help in the mountains and then never see him again. Somehow she doubted it. Raina made herself comfortable over her own tree. She looked at him and he was looking at her, embarrassingly enough she turned away. If one could tell she would be blushing, she could feel the heat rise to her face. Stupid, she thought to herself. She rolled her eyes before closing them for a nice night sleep.
Raina usually woke early. She figured it was probably a few hours after dawn due to the coolness of the air, the light and dew or rain that was left over from the previous night. Her ears flickered as she started to awaken, she got to her feet and her bright lavender eyes watched as the birds chirped happily. She smiled lightly. It was a good sleep, she felt up to traveling the mountains. Plus this time she wouldn’t have to make the venture alone. Then again…she had to make sure Lex was still there and didn’t wander off. She turned and sure enough the black stallion was still sleeping. She smiled lightly, he was quiet when he slept. Her eyes widened as she was disproved, something in his dream had him huffing. She smirked. She supposed she would have to get him. She felt bad for doing so, he did look peaceful. She shrugged it off before walking over to him and nosing his cheek. Nervously she wrapped her tail around her leg, and nosed him once more to get him up.

His head tilted to the side when Raina turned her head away. Lex half-shrugged, it likely didn't mean much and if it did, he had no idea what it meant. Lex closed his eyes finally, drifting off to sleep fast. He really was tired.
He didn't dream often but when he did they were wild. Tonight he dreamed. Lex sighed and his nose twitched as he continued to sleep. He wanted to rise early, he did, but waking up early when he wanted to didn't seem to work. So he continued to sleep, not hearing Raina wake up.
He was flying. No, correction, he was falling. Falling very fast. Plummeting to his death. But Lex didn't have a choice. Okay he did but who wanted to be eaten by a group of hungry, freaky eyed bunnies? Oh sure, they're supposedly all cute and fluffy but to Lex they were evil. Least, they always were in his dreams. So he ran, he ran past trees until the edge of a cliff came in view. His options were limited. One, he stopped and let them eat him or two, he jumped. The other side wasn't too far away....
He huffed in exhaustion and mumbled in his sleep, "I'll beat you, you crazy, horse-eating bunnies!"
He jumped.
He failed.
As he fell, Lex felt rather light. Almost as if he was floating. But the ground was coming closer to him. Could he die from this dream? It never happened like this before. Lex blinked.
The close ground vanished. He was standing now in a field, a dark and foggy field. It was quiet. No one else around but him. He blinked slowly, trying to get used to the dark, it had been daylight before. Lex trudged through the field, searching....for what exactly? This wasn't like the usual dream. He should be swimming in the ocean, reaching the stars, doing crazy stuff. Escaping from crazy stuff. Not this. This was unsettling.
Something brushed against him. Lex wildly looked around. Nothing. It came again, the nudge of something or someone. The field slowly disappeared, as he began to wake up.
Lex yawned and stretched as his gray eyes opened. Raina? He spotted her looking at him. He yawned again, in her direction this time. "Sorry." He said to the ground. No manners at all. Yawning at her without a good morning or even a thanks for not leaving him behind.
Lex climbed to his legs, shaking his head to get rid of the last remnants of sleep and the dream he experienced.
"You been awake long?" Lex looked over at Raina again at last. He hoped she hadn't but mostly he wondered if he was the one who woke her up. It had been awhile since he slept near someone, the last soquili had been Canon. The stallion had mentioned once that Lex was a quiet sleeper, only making noise occasionally. Did he make noise last night? What if he said or did something remotely embarrassing?
"That dream was.........different." He laughed slowly and softly, glancing again at her.
