There are times when moments of pure insanity are marred by days of bliss. The sun was out, and it was shining. There were no dark, many-legged creatures running up her legs to travel the channels between her nostrils and mouth. Even the illusions had faded into nothing.

The mare's eyes went searching; their pupils were of little width. She was waiting, always waiting. It would have been harder had someone not always wanted her. Rumours traveled fast, so someone always wanted her. Clearly she needed a bigger, scarier, and more dangerous forest.

Usually it was funny. Strange, and perhaps a little wild. Today, she was lost in the peace of perfection. Her body was relaxed even if her ears were waiting for the crashing sounds of a boulder ready to smash her to bits; there was nothing. Chaos had taken the day off.

Since she wasn't trying to play mind-games with Casa Tiner's deathtrap, she could see the pair of Nequus at a distance.

That's right. Pair. Two males never the less. All looking very thoughtful and searching, and probably very stupid to think that they could come wander around Casa Tiner and expect to find her happy and sunning herself.

How ironic for her that this was exactly what was occuring. Not wanting to expend the energy, she simply waited for it all to come crashing down.

Any other day, he would have welcomed the sun, the feel of its warmth on his back, the bright sky. Today, he did not. It was hot, the side of the mountain was steep, and he was only just regaining his breath after the dash to join Castor. It was quite a way from Shrilal to Casa Tiner, and although he had made good time, the journey was still an exhausting one, and the desire to return to the tree and to his future children was great.

But still... this was Castor, and he could deny him nothing. Even if he didn't entirely understand. He had not heard the rumours himself, though he assumed being passed through one more mind had not twisted them too much - Ignatius was an honest sort, after all. He just wondered how much such things could be trusted. Castor seemed to believe them: must do, to have called him all the way out here, away from the herd and from Jocasta. He seemed to have his mind set on this working, on it being true, and Meleager... could not quite bring himself to voice his doubts. Not now.

He halted, breath still coming a little harder than he would have liked - damn, he hated getting older - and turned to his lover. "Castor - tell me again why we're here. What we're supposed to be doing. I got the explanation from Ignatius, but I want you to tell me."

There, that would give him a chance to rest as well as a chance to understand what exactly was going on. Well, hopefully he would understand.

He slowed as he heard the hoofbeats behind him and smiled a little. He had known Meleager would catch him up. It was nice to know things about people for once. The dappled stallion looked more than a little tired when he came alongside, and his panting breath confirmed his weariness. He must really have rushed. Humm. Perhaps it had taken Ignatius longer than he had expected to find the growing tree; he hadn't been to shrilal since his foalhood so he had probably miscalculated its size. Ah well, Meleager had made it before he met the strange mare that was supposed to be here and that was really all that mattered to him.

"Reconnaissance," he began with a nod. "You have perhaps heard the rumors about this mare? Given the prevalence of homosexual partnerships within our handrakai I felt it would be worthwhile investigating said rumors." Did he want the proof given to Meleager and himself directly?... He wasn't really sure. He liked foals, they were simpler than adults, and he liked the idea of having his own foals... But Meleager already had a tree growing, and he wasn't entirely certain that he would be a fit parent. He'd do well as a friendly presence he had no doubt, but he couldn't see himself being able to teach foals all the normal lessons in life that you were supposed to... Yet the idea remained rather attractive. He had other things to offer foals; Meleager could cover the normality side. He wasn't sure. He had always assumed it was something he could never have, and so he had never tried to examine his feelings on the matter...

"Thank you for coming at such short notice," Castor said after some moments of silence. "I realize that I have torn you away from your duty to Jocasta but... I couldn't wait. Nobody knows how long this mare will linger. I must know if she can do what it is said she can do. It is... it is..." What was he trying to say? He wasn't quite sure. "I can't stand the idea of not knowing one way or the other," he continued eventually. "I need to know if it is something that is possible for... for people like us." He hoped he'd explained that alright. It was hard to know if he had or not, given that he didn't really understand his feelings himself. This was just something he had to do, in the same way as he had to eat, breathe, sleep. He couldn't explain. He just knew he had to find out.

Meleager listened intently as Castor explained, trying to read him; that was always a hard task with the Master Tactician. This time he thought he understood. If it was just because of the 'prevalance' of same-sex relationships amongst the Hellenes, it would not require two of the most senior members of the herd to go off on such a reconnaissance mission. He was rather glad it wasn't about just that. Now he was here, and had heard Castor's thoughts on the matter, he was beginning to feel a slight, hopeful excitement.

"It's alright," he reassured the pale crossbreed with a smile, stepping closer to nuzzle his neck briefly. "Ignatius will cover for me, and stay with Jocasta. I just wish you'd not rushed off on your own - your sister might still be around."

That sounded a little accusatory, the muscled stallion reflected, and added hurriedly, "But you're not hurt, so never mind. I can... I can see why you were so eager to get here." I think.

So he wanted proof? He wanted both to find this mare, to prove that she existed, and to see if she could do what was claimed of her? Meleager was not entirely sure what that meant; in their previous discussions, Castor has dismissed the idea of foals as a nice one, but not for him. Perhaps that had been more by necessity than by choice, Meleager considered. He himself was certainly not averse to the idea of having more children with the slim Ichsa cross, but he was doubtful: were such things truly possible? That was why the rumours had spread with such rapidity, he supposed, because they were so wild. No doubt exaggeration had entered into the process as well.

The dappled herdleader frowned. He was thinking about this too much. It seemed he really could see why Castor needed to find out the truth.

Castor smiled and nuzzled back. "It was a calculated risk; I doubted I would run into her in the time it took you to find me... Still, perhaps I have been a little too hasty." He frowned slightly and shook his head. "I'm not sure... I could have waited for you to return from the tree but as I said she might have vanished again by then and... Yes. I don't think I'd be a very good parent," he went on slowly, thinking as he spoke, "but I would... I think I would like to try all the same. I might not even be bad as such, just not normal and... well... Yes, I'd like to find out." He shrugged his wings and offered Meleager another smile, glad that the dappled Reya at least didn't seem averse to the idea.

"If the whole thing is just a hoax I'll not be very surprised, rather disappointed but hardly crushed. If it is possible then that's wonderful but if it isn't, well really it's nothing lost, just life as I've always expected it... What do you think?" With a tree already growing, would he want more children? Children were after all a lot of work; too many probably wouldn't be any fun at all.

Meleager grinned a little. "Castor, I would love to have children with you. And I don't think you'd be bad at all..." His face grew more serious, then, and he added, "but I think that these rumours are the wildest thing I've heard in a long time. I don't see how they could be true, really. But... as you said, it's worth trying to find this mare and find the truth for ourselves, I suppose. It can't hurt, and Jocasta will be fine in the meantime."

The rumours were probably the wildest thing he'd heard since... since the black Bae foal-killers, he realised. But that had turned out to be true. At least this was nothing so sinister. It might turn out to be wonderful; it might be a little time lost with the growing tree and an expedition up a mountain. He didn't even mind that much being away from Jocasta; mares could get snappy while their tree was growing, and this time he didn't have the love to put up with that even when she was being completely unreasonable. And it was a good chance to spend some time with Castor, too.

The grey stallion smiled, then gave his legs and wings a stretch. Those muscles would start to stiffen if he let them cool down too much. "Shall we carry on?" he suggested, glancing away in the direction they were headed.

Castor smiled and nodded his agreement; "Yes, we must be close by now I'm sure." He didn't really know what to say to the rest... Foals together? It was a big thing to get his head around, an impossible thing according to common logic but... Well, whatever this mare truly was, if the rumors were true then she was very much accustomed to pushing logic aside and making the laws of nature sit up and beg. To her, no doubt, they were more like guidelines.

"I hope she can do what they say she can," Castor said eventually, turning to Meleager with a smile as they set off once more. "It would be... it would be..." he smiled and flicked his wings in a shrug. "I don't think I can really think of a word to describe what it would be fully. Wonderful. Frightening perhaps, that sort of power, but mostly wonderful." Able, however, wasn't the only factor that would affect whether or not he and Meleager would be given a tree. Willing. Able and willing; that was what they needed.

Yes, there was that, Meleager considered as he picked his way up the slope. If she was as powerful as the stories said, if she really could do what was claimed, she would likely be unwilling to answer requests from just any strange couple who came to her. He wasn't scared of that sort of power, exactly, but it certainly made him a little apprehensive. What if she refused to co-operate at all, chased them off her territory? She was unlikely to be able to harm either of them, but it would be a great disappointment if she could, but wouldn't, grant their desire... What would be the best way to deal with that?

The bulky stallion frowned, wondering if it would just come down to luck. If she was generous, or if she was cold. If Castor would be able to persuade her, silver-tongued, or if he himself would be able to reward or threaten her enough to...

Absorbed in thought, Meleager didn't notice the knarled root sticking up from the ground. One forehoof caught on it, and he stumbled, cursing and shaking himself back to awareness. In that moment, he caught sight of a flash of blue-white ahead of them. A flash of blue-white that had the vague shape of a Nequus... He nudged Castor with one wing, gesturing at the figure. "Castor. We might not have to go much further..."

It might not be the mare they were looking for; but really, how many other Nequus would they find up here?

Castor turned his head as Meleager spoke and gave a slight nod of his head. That profile did not belong to any kind of Nequus he knew. Pricking his ears forward intently, he picked his way up towards her. As he drew closer, he became more certain than ever. Yes. This was her. A strange tail with bony protrusions, the strangest horns he'd ever seen... This was her. He slowed, running his eyes carefully over every inch of her. Should he speak first? Might as well give a greeting, he supposed. He wasn't quite sure what to say to her though.

"Greetings. You must be the mare everyone has been whispering about of late. I am Castor of handrakai Hellene." Well, that would do for a start. After this he would have to find a way to discern the truth of the matter. Was it true? Was it really true? He hoped so, hoped it more than he liked to admit even to himself. Something that had been impossible, not even considered, before the rumors was now something he wanted. He didn't know if he'd be good at it, but he wanted to try. He wanted a chance. That was all. Just a chance.

Well, they did take their sweet time, didn't they?

Yawning, the mare settled herself onto the ground. The long, muscular tail that extended behind her thumped aimlessly on the earth beneath her; it picked up and shredded grass thereby tossing clods of dirt here and there.

The little blue - cyan? ocean sky on a bright day? And maybe he wasn't so little - the medium sized ocean sky on a bright day male was addressing her. The mare had to poke an eye open in order to transfer visual to mental.

My goodness, he was polite. "Eh, I know, I know," she muttered. With a heavy sigh she got to her feet.

Her eyes went looking the two creatures over. One was handsome. Clearly full of himself. The other? Clearly full of too much respect for his own good. It was like walking into an anarchy party. . .

"So. . . you must be the dom," she said with a grin towards Meleager. "Which one of you wants to take care of the children?"

For a long moment, Meleager had no idea what the mare was saying, and then no idea what to say in reply. She was rather forward, it seemed to him - almost crude. He settled for ignoring what she had actually said, simply adding his own greeting. With a brief inclination of his head, he spoke, "I am Meleager, herdleader of Handrakai Hellene. I take it you are the mare we were looking for..." Here he trailed off a little, unsure of how to continue until he glanced at Castor, remembered the mare's question, and found himself only able to add, "Um."

That was not a question they had considered. He should have realised that one of them would have to act the mare in this situation - how could he failed to think of that? He wondered if Castor had thought about it, had an answer already. Neither would be ideal... For Castor, Meleager was worried that he was too slim to endure such a draining experience. But for himself, he was reluctant to submit to that, to risk the loss of muscle tone and strength... selfish, perhaps, but there was Jocasta to think about too. The bulky stallion frowned, turning to his lover in the hope that he would have a better answer.
PostPosted: Fri May 08, 2009 2:39 pm

Castor gave a slight smile to the mare. "I am capable of taking on that role." He had tossed the idea around in his head and come up with no logical argument one way or the other. In the end, he had decided to go with his gut instinct. He could not imagine Meleager standing under a tree waiting for him to fetch food. The warrior would grow restless for action, and probably wouldn't like having to depend so completely on anyone else. He didn't mind relying on Meleager, and had no doubt he could keep himself occupied with mental exercises without a problem.

Now that was decided, how would they persuade her to do it? She seemed assured that she could... This was not his area of expertise. Interpersonal interaction. Should he be bribed, he wondered? Meleager could offer her all sorts of favors that most seeking her out would not be able to. What motivated her? What did she want? He hoped she would be plain and tell them, but was not too hopeful on that score. Castor was not much of a cynic, but he was aware that life seldom turned out nice and neat like that.

Right. So the blue boy was going to be the mother. Cute. She wondered if it was appropriate to call him Sue Boy instead. She realized that she didn't really care if was appropriate.

"You take it right, or I'd assume as much by the looks you've been exchanging." The horned tail cracked and struck her once across the legs. Damn pests were all over the place.

Taking in a deep breath, she clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth. Well, she didn't really like either of them, but who did she ever like? No one, really. Actually, no, she loved everyone. That's why she did such crazy things to them. To express her love. Hah.

"Okay boys. Go find me a purple plant about yay tall, and surrounded in prickly spikes. Don't touch the spikes. They're poisonous. Just bring me the flower."
PostPosted: Mon May 11, 2009 12:37 pm

Ah. Well, that solved the problem of what to do about persuading her. She wanted a flower. A flower from a poisonous, prickly, likely rare plant, that they had to find in a place neither had been before. Well, how hard could it be? He was sure there must be a trick to it - or maybe she would disappear as soon as they were gone. Maybe she was laughing at them secretly, sending them on foolish errands while pretending to be more powerful than she was...

She was certainly physically powerful. Meleager had noticed her tail crack and strike out at the insects that had been bothering her, and he certainly wouldn't want to face it as a weapon. That was not relevant though - or he hoped so, anyway. Now, this flower... Did they need any more information on it? He thought not. There was no point in questioning her further. They were here already; looking for this flower was no real inconvenience. And it would give him some time to speak with Castor about what he had just agreed to.

"Alright, the flower." The bulky stallion dipped his head in a gesture of respect. "We will bring it to you as soon as we find it." He looked over at Castor, hoping the crossbreed stallion would have a better idea of how to start looking than he did.

Castor frowned thoughtfully and nodded along with Meleager absentmindedly. Purple spiky plant... He was usually quite good about knowing what was what in the world but he'd never heard of such a thing. Had to be unique to the ice mountains, he supposed; it wasn't as though this place was well explored. "Can you tell us its preferred habitat?" he asked of the pale mare. "I must confess I don't recognize the description."

If they didn't know where to look for it, they stood little chance of happening across it before she got bored and left for the depths of the forest. He was not going to be denied his chance at foals because he hadn't known where to look for this plant. If she wouldn't tell them, then fine, he'd do his best but he wouldn't hamper the effort out of sheer pride. There was nothing wrong with admitting ignorance; if you didn't then you could never learn anything new after all. If he had claimed to know all about this mare when people had asked him if he'd heard of her, they wouldn't be here now.
