Well, we don't know whether the world does infact unite. Sure, they stop for a moment, but with politicial model in the novel remains the same, I believe it would only be temporary. Soon enough we will all decend into all again. It is not until the end that
the smartest man in the world actually questions his actions, and experiences doubt. A demon Veidt has to wrestle with the rest of his life.
Could the joke be taken back down to the individual level. Could the joke be: That a society that can idolise such a sick individual like Blake? And condones it for its own selfish motives?
