I recently started taking Yasmin (a birth control pill) and I am beginning to suspect that it is having both affective and sexual side-effects. My mood has been less stable and my sex drive has dropped to next to nothing. The website does mention that a possible side effect is "moodiness," (in my case that seems to be a major understatment) but they don't mention anything about sexual side effects.
Now, this could all be unrelated to the medication (correllation is not causation, after all), but I had my first really bad depressive episode in a good while last night and today, and, as I said, sexually there is nothing going on, which is immensely frustrating for both myself and my fiance.
So... does anyone have any experience with this (or other) birth control pills? Should I call my general practitioner sooner or later? Should I tell my psychiatrist?

Birth control pills often cause Depression, and Depression can cause low sex-drive and other sexual issues! If I were you, I'd tell both your general practitioner and your Psychiatrist soon, since it's already affecting your life and relationship.

I'm going on the Pill soon (because my mum wants me to. God I'm 14 damnit!). Are you on anti-depressants? Because I know that some medication affects them, even cold and flu tablets do. Remember that you can get sideaffects that aren't mentioned. With an anti-depressant I was on awhile ago I started hearing things, and it was just the medication but it wasn't a known sideaffect.

I was on Alesse and it had a horrible effect on me.

Lots of birth control causes depression and a decrease in sex drive, if it doesn't go away entirely! When I went on Depo-Provera not only did I gain 55 pounds in a year, but that made me so much more depressed than normal obviously, that I didn't work for nearly the whole time I was on it... it was really bad. My sex drive has only returned recently, a year after I stopped the Depo. I've only been able to lose 25 of the 55 pounds so far. My weight's been stable for at least half a year now... sad
Maybe you could try using the birth control Nuvaring. That's worked really well for me. Instead of being a pill or a shot that puts chemicals throughout your entire body, it's only localized to your actual v****a / uterus and stuff. It's a small plastic ring you put in your v****a that you can't even feel. You leave it in for a month and put in a new one the first day of every month. It's really convenient and doesn't have all the same gross side effects of other B.C. methods like shots or pills.

eek I'd rather be celibate than depressed. (not that you have to be completely celibate to avoid getting pregnant, but still...)

I'd definitely talk to your doctor...no matter how many clinical tests they can make on meds, they don't check for side effects with every single med, and also it's got a lot to do with the individual that can't be tested in a lab. In any case, I really strongly suggest if the pill is giving you problems you get another pill or another form of BC, since it's just not worth it to have something make you depressed (like one of my antidepressants did)

i personally would suggest that you should inform both ... because you really don't know whats going on and they might be able to help you with the side affects or help you with what ever your going through if its not... so i would say defenetly go talk to both...

Well, here's an update: the side-effects subsided somewhat. The sex drive is back to some extent, and the depression is fading a bit. The real question for me, at this point, is whether the B.C. is worth it.
I'll definitely check out that ring thing, and I'll talk to my doctor when next I see her about the side-effects I experienced. I talked to my mother (who's a psychiatrist) about some of them and she said that 1) in about 2/3 of cases the side-effects do subside, 2) if they don't there are other options. Made me feel a bit better to know the approximate numbers and that there are other things I can take.

Nuvaring? Haven't heard of that one.
From what I know, nearly all birth control pills cause depression. If you're depressed, you're not going to have the best sex drive. Unless you're allergic to latex, just use condoms. I haven't heard of side effects from those.

I don't want babies, thankyouverymuch.
