Are crossbows worth it?

I've decided I wanna make a crossbow from scratch and was wondering if anybody had any links or tips on how to do so. Right now I've drawn up plans based on pictures. I have the just of it but can't figure out the firing mechanism based on pictures.

Found this site:

And is specifically talks about the trigger mechanism. Not sure if that helps...

the traditional firing mechanism for a crossbow is a rolling cam. how it works is, a cam in the crossbow has two notches on opposite sides, the top notch catches the string, the bottom notch is where the end of the trigger sits. when the trigger is pulled, it releases the cam and the string is allowed to move forward, pushing the bolt.
the trigger is basically just a lever, theres no linkage on the trigger in the traditional setup.

modern triggers have linkages that release the catch and allow the string to fly, but its much more intensive on parts.

hope this helps, I can run up a quick drawing for you, but I ahve to upload it to photobucket before I can put it up here, if you'd like it, send me your email or something and I'll pass it along, or if you can wait that long, find me at mid-reign and I'll be happy to sit down and discuss crossbows with you

Well I'll totally be at mid-reign so I'll probably catch you then. I plan on that weekend being very A&S intensive for me as I'm competing in the DM and attending the weapon construction class to share a few pointers. I might even bring what I've got on it so far.

Thanks for the link. I've actually used a similar mechanism in a PVC crossbow I made years ago but it was never field legal so I scraped it. The bow portion actually had a 50lb pull so I wouldn't dare fire it at anyone.

I use a wristrocket style slingshot as a hand crossbow, it's small, ammo can easily be used as throwies, and having been shot myself with it at point blank range and full draw I will gladly state that it is safe. Effective range 100-150 feet, depending on wind

To extend the idea, I saw a group of three use one of those uber-big water balloon slingshots on the field. It was a seige weapon that accurately shot across the clan battlefield.

I've actually seen quite a few. They go in and out of style.

I recently built a crossbow and our champion already deemed it legal.
My trigger basically hold the string in a notch and pushes a wooden dowel up against the string to release it. Give me a minute to look for my pics.

I wish we were still allowed to use bows at our park. emo Some old guy saw our group and freaked out on us. So now we either have to pay 100 dollars for a permit every six months, or switch parks. stare
