Does anyone have experiences with publishing? Or hoping to one day? Share!

Only a few poems so far. I'm working up the nerve to submit my novel. I have been an editor for a couple lit mags though, so if anyone's curious about how the submission process for a small lit mag works I'd be happy to share.

I would like to run my own literary magazine someday. I imagine it's really hard, but I'll work up to it. What magazine do you work for and what kind of stories do they accept, because I've got some short stories that I'm trying to find the right magazines for.

I plan on turning my first novel and probably this NaNo novel as well into free ebooks, once I get around to editing them. sweatdrop

I'm not editing right now - but when I was in university I worked on our uni lit mag called "existere" - it's a pretty typical uni lit mag focused on mainstream and experimental stuff. Not the place to send genre work, but anything else would have a fair chance. The editors change every couple years so the only really consistent bent the mag has is in terms of poetry because the university (York University in Ontario, Canada) is sort of a haven for sound poets right now.

Back when I was in high school, I ran my own mag with a couple of friends. If you're only putting out one or two issues a year it's really not too bad in terms of workload - the tricky part is always just getting enough people to submit so you actually have some good stuff to choose from.

What kinds of stories are you looking to publish? I know the Canadian lit mag market pretty well, the US one somewhat (more for specific genres).

Publishing was one of my earlier aspirations, during that first stage of writing where everything that you put down on paper is grand and awe-inspiring (read: awful). Since then, I've sort of put it out of my head, or at least, until I write myself a magnum opus.

I'm hoping my book will get published someday. I know that I'll probably end up with a series, but no matter what anyone tells me, I'm writing my damn book and getting it sent out! I'm currently "writing" it now (when I have time, which is hardly ever now... rolleyes ) but I have almost everything in my head now. I just have to get it all out on paper...er...computer.

Yes, unfortunately I have only had poems and the like published, nothing large scale like a novel. All I know is that if you are going to try and get something published you should get ready for rejection. I use Harry Potter as an example, I believe she went through 14 publishing companies until someone would publish it, and we all know how well the Harry Potter books are written.
