Name: Viper Serpentia The history behind Viper's name is both long and short. His first name is a tradition of the Gi side of his family. For example, his brother was known as Sunbeam or Sunny, after the Sunbeam Snake. Viper is named after, as would be expected, a viper snake. There are many vipers in the world, in many different guises, it is unknown to most after which individual animal he was named. His second name is a typical english translation of his long and somewhat difficult to pronounce family title. He settles for the short version. Age: 25 Weapon: Hardedge Viper's hardedge is one of the usual, military issue. There is very little of note about it other than the decent shine on it and it's evident use. It is no show weapon but it's blade is always sharp and it's handle always clean.Faction: SOLDIER First Class Viper always aimed, since he was a young boy, to make it to the prestigious rank of SOLDIER First Class, of course, in those days, he didn't know of the baggage that came with the job, namely the more "messy" missions where traitors to the state were eradicated and the exposure to degrees of mako exposure that make one's head ache and sickness creep it's tendrils into your gut. Being monitored regularly in terms of mental and physical progress wasn't much fun either. But he did it in the end, proving that the title /was/ attainable. These days, he does what he is told, when he is told, a model pupil to his superiors, no matter how dark the intent of the commands.Personality: Capricious Viper's personality largely hinges on where one meets him and the noise level of that area. Busy places set him on edge, his inability to isolate sounds no matter their unimportance putting him at a disadvantage, but quiet areas are where he shows his true, somewhat calm nature. If he is under orders, he will be as callous and detached as the job demands, outwith orders, he can be as warm and friendly as anyone else. He has a distinct competitive streak and will often refuse to back down even in a dangerous situation. He feels he has something to prove to the world, possibly linked to his heritage and the lack of any living ancestors. He has a soft spot for tonberries (!) and chocobos.

---------- ----------
Shin-Ra What could be said about Shin-ra that hasn't already by someone else? The great company sprung up as a seemingly innocent power company monopolising on the newly discovered energy source, mako. However, the dependence and loyalty of the citizens this resource gained them allowed the company to begin a hostile takeover of one of the most powerful and influential cities in the world, Midgar. Over time the company went from strength to strength, it's army, evolved from a need to expand power and influence was generally based in Junon, a former fishing town, now military base of operations.
After Sephiroth's chaotic interference with the company however, it is humbled somewhat, no longer holding the vice like hold it once did over the world, nevertheless, there are still those who maintain loyalty to it's old ways when all that mattered was power.
SOLDIER SOLDIER is the military force of Shin-Ra, their army and their opressive force, many aspire to join the ranks of these esteemed warriors from a young age but only a few make it past the qualifying exams. Through physical alteration via mako infusion these elite soldiers gain both exceptional strength and an odd glow to their eyes. This physical trait immediately marks an individual out as an ally of Shin-ra and illicits caution on the behalf of those they encounter.
The SOLDIER system has four ranks, often marked out by the colour of their outfit and the unit as a whole requires extensive physical and aptitude tests to gain entry into.
Viper himself spent a very long time on studying to join the unit and was somewhat dissillusioned when he beheld the downsizing of the company over the war that preceeded.
The Gi
On the southern part of the western continent, there is present a long history, one which remained until recent times, wholly seperate from the history of Midgar and the eastern world. Of all the ancient cities, the two that remain there are Gongaga and Cosmo Canyon. But this was not always so, for hundreds of years the canyon dwellers were in direct contention with a tribe of warriors known as the Gi. This dispute was wholly equal with neither side holding the upper side, not even the beasts that cosmo canyon called it's guardians were immune to the skilled poisons that were often produced by the Gi.
However, this once proud race was all but decimated in a last ditch attack made on the vulnerable back caverns of the canyon. The cheiftain, a proud Gi Nattak, a master of fire magic, called the attack on the "heathens" for joining forces with the technological powers of the east, Bugenhagen being one of their key reasearchers.
In the attack, they managed to defeat Seto, one of their nemesis, but in turn, were slain themselves. From that point on all that remained of the Gi were the young and the females of the tribe who had not partaken in the battle. They were scattered far and wide and only the spirits of the once proud warriors remained Even the chief, for all his power, is now but a wraith.

--------- --------- Viper was born not long after the fall of the Gi. After the battle his mother fled with the others to the nearest hospitable town, lest the canyoners pursue them. Viper remembers none of this, he was born in the wilderness to a stricken mother.
His early years were spent in a variety of homes, his mother moving from town to town in search of a decent life for the two of them. In most places however, all they encountered were hostile people set in their own ways, amiable at first but not happy with the idea of two foreigners, possibly dangerous, taking up residence in their hometown. It was for this reason that Viper spent his childhood very much alone. His mother worked all day in fields, sewing, cleaning, anything which would fill their bellies each night, so he didn't even have the solace of her to speak with.
This transient existence finally came to an end when Viper was around 16 years old. Having moved here and there, back and forth like unwanted dogs, his mother and him finally found somewhere to live in the slums of Midgar, their earnings coming from a humble item shop his mother managed to scrape together. They got by and found a neighbourhood so below the breadline that foreigners were of no concern. Viper even made a few friends in this time and not long after encountering his first patrol of troops, aspired to join the army.
After signing up as a troop, Viper moved up through the ranks gradually, proving himself a concientious and hard worker, who would obey orders unflinchingly and who, through his genetics, was physically strong. His next step was to proceed to SOLDIER rank, and after much hard work and toil, at the age of 20 he was admitted into the prestigious elite.
This triumph however, was tinged with sadness, his mother, a mature woman when he was born, passed away a year into his SOLDIER career, before she did so instilling in her son a patriotic pride in his roots and a deep rooted dislike of any who called cosmo canyon their home, such was prejudice.

Name: Metorian Primary colour: Yellow Age: Adult Gender: Male Description: Metorian, Met as Viper likes to call him, is the SOLDIER's oldest chocobo. Earned through hard graft in his early days of the army, Viper gave up much of his paycheck to hire the stable where the chocobo spent his days. Not too special in abilities in colouration, Met is no racer, instead Viper uses him for travel, trusting the dependable chocobo to take him wherever he needs to go. Lately, Metorian has been taking his role as Nattak's guardian very seriously.
Name: Nattak Primary colour: Red Age: Chickobo Gender: Male Description: Viper has high hopes in this little chick's future as a racer, showing a slight aptitude from his hatching, Nattak showed a tendency towards speed as soon as he could walk. Arriving in a box purchased from a travelling merchant, Viper thanked his lucky stars when the egg hatched out to be a splendidly coloured chocobo with a sprightly attitude. For now however, Nattak is in the care of Met, where he takes great joy in getting underfoot and generally being a nuisance.

---------Roleplay record---------- A day at the chocobo farm Baneful Ah, free time truly was precious these days, Viper had noticed. Given leave from the unit for a day or two, he had chosen to get the heck out of Midgar for the day and go check up on his choco's in the ranch. It had turned out an excellent day to do so, the sun shining brightly through the clouds, reminding him how long it had been since he had been out of that dark and misty place he called home. Out here, his "condition" didn't seem too bad, sounds that normally pressed in from all angles were gone, replaced by faint chocobo coos, warks and the occaisional voice carried from elsewhere in the farm.
It had been a while since he was last here, but he never lost the mental map of where his chocobo were housed. The stables were warm and smelled faintly of straw as he entered out of the bright daylight, his eyes glowing in the gloom.
A few chocobos gave him reproachful looks from their stables as he passed on his way. Finally, he came to where his Chocobo and Chickobo were stalled, side by side, he knew the farm schedule and it must be their turn in the open pasture soon, he reckoned. Might as well let them stretch their legs in the yard, get some grooming done.
Metorian tilted his head as he caught sight of Viper and let out a happy squawk. Viper, as usual, reached up a hand to scratch the chocobo behind his crest, one of his favourite spots. "Hello there you." he said with an affectionate grin.
Another peep met his ears and he looked down into the neighbouring stall, this one a little higher. "Ah! Nattak! Long time no see."
Reaching in, he scooped up the red and white chicobo and held the tiny creature up to examine. "Wow, you've gotten big since I last saw you, gotten some of that red plumage in I told them you'd have." Gently, he tucked the chicobo under one arm, cradling it carefully, and tacked up Metorian on a lead rein before taking both chocos out into the sunlight and the quiet yard.
Now all he had to do was find a vacant pen to let them stretch their legs in. Baneful Viper could see two unfamiliar faces over by one of the pens, and pondered wether to head over and let Metorian in for a walk around. After all, there wasn't any other chocobos out in the fenced off area. Making his way over, he opened the gate and let Meto in, removing the lead rein. The Chocobo let out another greatful wark and went off for a walk across the grass. Viper just watched him go before turning his attention back onto Nattak. He was fiercely protective of the chicobo and wasn't sure wether he wanted to let him run about the ground in case he got underfoot, so, deciding the best option was to let Metorian look after the chick for now, he placed Nattak on the grass, where, in true chicobo style, he followed the larger chocobo around like a sheep.
It really did amuse the pale haired man how well the two chocobos seemed to get along. Metorian had a latent maternal side to his nature that Nattak brought out effortlessly.
Removing his SOLDIER cap, worn most of the time for the sake of it, Vipe leaned against the fence and fanned himself with the brim. He didn't like eavesdropping, but, thanks to his lovely habit of paying attention to every little noise at once, it was hard not to. However, he showed no sign of his attentiveness to the two not far off, his gaze on his chocobos. Toushin Now Falcon may be no professional soldier but he did have a sixth sense that told him when he wasn't alone, or in this case, they. There was also the sight of the extra Chocobos that he breaks his attention of Ty to look around and spy the man nearby. Eyes narrow for a split second, studying him then he looks back to her with his previous happy expression.
He nods his head in acknowledgement, keeping those hands securely placed in his pockets. Did he have his sword with him? Always. It was tucked neatly away at his right hip as it ought to be, ready for use at any given moment, but there was always a lingering hope that he could go each day without having to make use of its sharp edge.
"Oh. I'm from Costa Del Sol," he answers. There was the reason for his sea-side like get up and dark skin. He was a beach boy, often times spending it on waves or lounging in the sand. Or, well, when he had the time to do so anyway. "I have some friends who live in Midgar so I was coming over to visit them. What about you -- where you from?" Selona "Originally from Midgar, moved not so far from here now actually. Small town coupla miles up." Chianni squaked a bit from behind her, and began to wander off towards the mid-field. Turning around to comment, Ty finally noticed the other chocobos present in the field.
"Oh hey..." her breath whisped out, "Nice... lil red one there's real nice lookin'." she turned back to face Falcon, stretching a bit.
"Costa Del Sol y'say? I've heard nice things 'bout there. Hear it's pretty nice." Still young, and with a hint of naivety, Tymara was still slightly clueless about their silent watcher. Beyond the extra chocobos, she simply assumed their owner was about, or perhaps a stablehand was letting them loose for some excersize. She had no immediate fear of harm or danger. Baneful Viper never hid his identity, his belt and cap both bore the sigil of the SOLDIER unit of Shin-Ra, deception was for the Turks he always said. He too had his sword with him, in plain veiw, sheathed in it's usual leather "holster" of sorts. However, at the moment, his weapon was of no concern to him, he was simply listening to two people having a casual chat. Out here, that was all it was.
Back in Midgar however, listening was a fine art, the SOLDIERs were the Shin-Ra corporation's attack dogs and most civilians knew it. Walls had ears and if they heard you speak rebellion, the SOLDIER unit would be the one sent to your door in the night. Viper knew this only too well and was glad to be able to turn a deaf ear on anything he heard outside Midgar. He wasn't a promotion hound like some of his comrades, he did his duty and little more.
He watched the two Chocos make their way about the feild, Metorian looking a little confused by the way Nattak kept nuzzling his feet when he stood still.
Indeed, it really was good to get a break sometimes and out here, under the blazing sun, you could forget what went on in the nighttime shadows. Baneful Viper had said not a word as the others chatted, insteadhe had gone over to the stables to fetch a brush, then had entered the pen where he brushed a somewhat obliging Metorian who even held out a wing to get it groomed. The SOLDIER only cast a sidelong glance over at the group when the tanned guy, whose name he didn't know called out to someone else regarding Junon or the Costa del Sol.
Viper preferred Junon of the two, but perhaps that bias came from his training that took place there and how much of a home it had been to him for a few years. He had met a few friends there that he would still remember twenty, thirty years from now. If SOLDIER training meant anything, it was that you were all in the same boat. He had only ever been to the Costa on a form of recon, making sure that there were no terrorist factions laying low there. Most of the soliders sent treated it as leave but the First Classes were not permitted that luxury. They caught one guy and brought him in for questioning there, masquerading as a sun tan lotion merchant.
The Costa del Sol was too salty and humid for Viper.
He watched as yet another person seemed to arrive, this one astride a purple chocobo, but he didn't pay too much heed to her, she seemed preoccupied with her mount anyway.
When he was done grooming Metorian, he moved onto Nattak, fetching a soft bristled brush for his more downy plumage. He peeped happily as Viper tended to the dust and grime that had settled on his crimson crest and wings. Baneful Viper let Metorian and Nattak wander about for a bit, stretch their legs and run around. He just stood and watched them play, his expression as neutral as he often kept it. After a while he put his hat back on and vaulted the fence one handed and headed over to the two chocos. Eventually he intended to train up Nattak as a battle steed, get him used to armour and such, he even had gil set aside from his wages to fund this project. One or two of the other SOLDIERs had the same idea in the past and Viper thought it had stood them all in good stead. Metorian would be able to keep Nattak company during his training but wouldn't need to work too hard himself. He reined up the yellow chocobo and scooped up the little red and white chicobo. Then with both of them with him, he made his way back into the stables and put them back in their stalls, refillled their feed box to save the staff the time later and then decided to head out for a walk around the farm to see what he could see.
"Later guys, be back later."

----------Roleplay Record ---------- A patrol in the rain Baneful The drizzle was a source of endless annoyance to Viper, as it rattled off of the corrugated iron roof of the slum houses it's hiss became all he could possibly hear. Most people could just phase the sound out as background noise, but not he, he had no option to hear the ceaseless hissing, the sound driving him nuts. He hated being sent on patrols like this, with no other function but to keep the peace, it tormented him, surely there were other less qualified soldiers who could be doing this instead of him? Ones who could concentrate perhaps?
He had been informed by his superiors that if any civilian needed his aid, he needed to be on hand, apparently some monster or other was on the loose. Still, he mused, more irritated than logical, it would be nice to get out of this damned rain.
Shaking his head slightly, he cleared some of the rainwater off of his hat and looked heavenwards, the rain seemed to be dwindling off to nothing again, good news, perhaps now he could dry off.
Making his way further along the winding streets, he spotted a poster, the first time he had encountered one of the ones he had heard about all over the city. The beast drawn on it was fearsome looking, no doubt one of the laboratory rejects, or a lone behemoth, he didn't rate the chances of an inexperienced fighter against it, nor in some ways did he rate the chances of a lone SOLDIER either.
Selona Why she was there, she still didn't know. Midgar was not her most favoured of places. Especially after just having spent countless days visiting the Chocobo farm. The weather here really seemed to fit her mood. Foul and dreary. The way she always felt when passing through.
Her footsteps pattered lightly as she walked down the street. Shrugging her jacket up further around her neck, she sighed and pushed back a portion of wet bang from her face. She liked the rain, at least, one could almost see it as washing away the grit of the city.
As she continued her way down the road, she stopped a moment, something catching the corner of her eye. Turning her head, she noticed a lone figure standing, looking at what must have been a poster of some sort.
Uncertain why, she felt a compulsion to make her way over. Perhaps she was curious to see what seemed to catch the fancy of this individual.
"Awfully wet day to be out viewin' the roadsigns..." she said as she walked towards the person, not wanting to startle them. Baneful The man heard Tymara's approach, her footsteps, though quiet, driving his attention away from the words on the cheap poster and into reality again. He turned and looked over his shoulder, expecting perhaps a bandit or some other gallant civilian out to try their luck, but instead he was met by an amiable comment and someone who actually appeared civil. Grinning slightly, he replied "Indeed it is. I would be indoors if the chance to be so arose."
His mako blue gaze took in the details of this unfamiliar stranger, SOLDIER instincts more instinct than concious seeking any kind of suspiciousness about her.
"But what about you? Isn't it a little wet to be out wandering in the rain?" he was actually quite happy to meet someone out here, not a soul had been past since the dratted rain started. Selona Tymara's head gave a slight tilt, the odd colour of the man's eyes startling her a bit. That was not what she had been expecting. Then again, she wasn't certain what exactly she had been expecting.
And wow, she suddenly felt short.
"A little," she laughed a bit to cover the embarrasment of standing there like a soaked rodent, "but I like the rain, so it's not bad. At least it isn't cold as well." she gave a light nod.
"So how come you're stuck outhere then?" Baneful Viper raised an eyebrow ever so slightly at her statement that she liked the rain, he would never ever understand what the draw was about getting soaked to the skin, the noise, that endless noise and everything being darkened beyond recognition. Viper didn't much like the rain himself. "I suppose, in Midgar it's normally the worst weather all the time to match this hellish city." he narrowed his eyes at the building across the street as though it were it's fault the city was dreary and drab, a prison of iron.
Returning to the conversation, he waved a hand casually - being one to talk with his hands- "I'm on patrol. Or at least I'm /supposed/ to be on patrol, it's kind of hard when nothing at all seems to be going on in the streets today." Selona ... huh.
"Yah. Reason number two I like the rain. Less people around." she chuckled lightly, turning to face the building the man had narrowed his glance at.
"Hmm, yah. Personally I'm glad I don't live here myself. I'm just passing through at the moment. Oh, I'm rude." she turned back, extending her hand.
"Tymara, nice to meet you." it wouldn't kill her to be cordial she supposed. After all, she had started this conversation. Baneful Viper had to agree with that, his high strung mentality could only really cope with a few people, Midgar at peak time in the summer gave him the worst kind of headaches imaginable. He nodded. "True."
He shrugged "I only live here sometimes, which is lucky, it would drive me mad otherwise, most of the year I spend in Junon." Now there was a slackers paradise, generations of soldiers had lived there and knew only too well how to work hard during the day but party harder at night. It was drab, but it was home.
He shook her hand amiably and replied "I'm Sergeant Viper." It dawned on him instantly that no he wasn't speaking to a fellow recruit and he immediately amended this sentence "but just call me Viper."
"Anyway, where were you off to?" Selona "Ah, I'm on my way home. I live in a small village which isn't too far from here. Tend to pass through here visiting the chocobo ranch, it's just faster for me to cut through." she thought on that a moment. Maybe it would be less taxing to take the long way around.
"Sergeant?" Well, he was in a uniform... darn. He didn't seem like too bad a person. Sad waste.
"Impressive. Viper's quite the name." she smirked.
"I've heard Junon's nice, but I've never visited it." Baneful "Ah, you keep chocobos too? I have two, one's just a chick though, I don't get much time to tend to them, off duty time is few and far between these days" He thought he detected a tone of dissaproval in her repetition of his title, it was something he was used to these days, what with Shin-Ra more humble than ever, people were berginning to point fingers at those whom had a hand in their former oppression. He didn't let it bother him, simply grinned. "Blame my mother, she was always a little odd, according to her the word viper just "sounded nice"." he shook his head in mock exasperation "I'm so glad she didn't take a liking to the word "asprin" or something."
"And Junon? It's a great place when you get settled, all my friends live there, hence why I'm stuck all on my lonesome here." that was one of the drawbacks of being a SOLDIER, the rest of the guys got to move in squads, but for missions like this, faith was given that you could handle yourself well enough.
Selona "Yah!" her tone changed from slightly off, to chipper as the subject of chocobos pressed on.
"I mean, yah. I do." she nodded, "I have two as well. Both females. One's name is Chianni.. she's an adult, yellow. Then I have a small fluff of feathers named Plia. She's cute, pink... covered in blue bubbles and falls on her face a lot." the memory of Plia running around the fields, then falling flat on her beak always left her amused. Such a cute chicaboo.
She shook her head, coming back from the thought, "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that you don't get much time with them. I can understand that though. I'm sure your job doesn't quite stop when you're gone." she turned to look at the poster a moment.
"Viper sounded.. nice? Haha. Quite the mother by the sounds of it. Hmm.. you never know," she turned back with a grin, "Aspirin could have been the new wave in baby names."
Stretching her arms up as the rain continued down. A soft frown touched her face as she thought about being stuck there alone.
"Well... that sucks." she said rather pointedly. Baneful "My two are males, one, Metorian, I've had since I was young, bought his egg with my first paycheck. He's a lazy, grumpy old sod but has a soft spot for those he knows well enough, he's a yellow too. The chick, Nattak is the opposite, never sits still for a minute, always eager to harrass Met, he's red with white highlights to his plumage."
It wasn't often Viper had a chance to have a bit of a complain to someone outside the military, generally you just grinned and bore it. He was glad of a friendly ear who wouldn't report you to your superior.
"Too true, I'm forever going on leave only to get some message or other saying that I'm wanted back home or they have a mission for me out there. I'm going to demand a holiday soon though, it's been slow around the city lately, bar a monster or two, and I'm sure they can handle those themselves." he gestured to the poster
He couldn't help but laugh at the mental image of a generation named after a painkiller. "Good thing my mother was one of a kind."

Dear diary.
Well, I've been back in Midgar for a few weeks now and had completely forgotten how dreary and drizzly this place is. I'm not the kind of person who gets depressed easily, but by the gods, this place would make even the brightest spirit dim. I've been on the trail of the beast that is said to be on the loose for weeks, all to no avail, it still evades me at every turn, leavng behind nothing but hearsay and speculation.
It makes me wonder if it simply another of the corporation's mess ups, a specimen gone awry. I am beginning not to care whom it kills in it's rampages, so long as it shows itself. People are expendable and missions must be completed. I do not relish the prospect of reporting back to the unit captain with an incompleted mission objective. No, I will find the creature, and so help me, I'll rend it's cowardly hide.
But words are words, they do not translate into actions agains an invisible enemy.
So I walk the streets as a loner, ignoring the looks of disgust and dissaproval I receive from the city's inhabitants, let them think what they will, I enjoy what I do.
I hope the thing shows itself soon, every day the rain seems to get louder and louder here, until it's like a roar.
It sets my mind on edge.
