I recently pulled out my old flute, which I usually used for marching band. I played it for a little bit and couldn't figure out why I was so out of tune, but I brushed it off because my band director has me playing oboe more frequently. I just set it down beside me, and took out my new flute, since it's easier to play and continued practicing. (And I did sound better, which is fairly normal considering how much of a better flute it is.)
It was when I was cleaning my flutes that I realized why my tone just sucked on my old one. I was using my tuning rod and a cleaning cloth on my head joint and without any effort at all the crown and cork just slipped out. At first I thought maybe it was because the crown wasn't tightened. I pushed it back in and began to screw it tighter but it quickly just started spinning. Thankfully if I turn the head joint upside down, it doesn't slip out, and I officially can push it in so that it's in the right place (based on my tuning rod). But is there anything I can do? Or will I have to take it into a repair shop? I mean, I might not need it, especially since I have my better one. Though I was considering doing marching band in college, so...help?

You might as well wait until you know if you'll need it. There's no point in fixing a flute you might not use.

I had that problem on my old flute also. My private lessons instructor said that was because the cork was dried out. She said I could soak it in water for a while or just get it replaced. I hope that helps! ^.^

It does. They both do. I'll at least try soaking it, and it's okay if it doesn't work. I'm off to go try that... Thanks!

Thank you so much, Panicked, it worked. I wasn't exactly sure how long to soak it, but I did overnight. It's back in tune thankfully. I'm really glad I didn't have to get it fixed.

I was told to actually boil it for 15 min, but I guess it does the same thing as soaking
