  Yes, I have.
  Nope, not me.
The average person has one every 19 years.

Has anybody else read "Beyond Coincidence", by chance?

I just picked it up from the library, and it raises some interesting questions about chance and destiny. For instance, study of police records has shown that car thieves often share an astrological sign with their victems. It might just make for an interesting topic to start off this forum with...or, maybe it won't. Then again, maybe one of you just happens to have read it too. If so, what a coincidence.....

I Haven't read the book. (coincidence?)
But i do interest in this kind of stuff. The Buddhists theorize that karma is made up of 2 aspects. The primary cause, meaning what a person has done to deserve the happening. This in itself is made up of three components: Intention, Action and Satisfaction. Intention is not only what you are planning to do, but more importantly WHY. Then of course the action is taking the step to go beyond planning into actually putting those plans into action, and satisfaction in the gratification you feel after the act is committed. Wether positive or negative, this goes both ways.
Then there is a secondary cause, that of cause and effect, like that of being distracted while driving. Meaning Primary cause of negative karma from actions past, plus the the secondary cause of not paying attention to the road leads to you getting in an accident. The key in this concept, I believe is that men are in control of both causes.

I've read a bit of the book. Interesting ideas in sme of it. I think it's intereting how many people send volcanic rocks back to Hawaii because they beleive that they've been cursed by the volcano goddess.

Actually, the concept that astrological signs might actually have a scientifically verifiabe effect on people amuses me. I've always agreed with Nicu. "Why would I ignore everything I can't burn, measure, or weigh?"

I have not read such book. It does seem to pique my interest a little though. And as for coincidences, I believe things can happen in such a way, but I never try to rely on them. As I say, their only reliability lies in their unreliability.

that is to say, the only constant is change.
i speak with many atheists, and very few of them believe in any cosmic revolving door effect. I think it is because many atheists seem to practice the belief of no belief, as faithfully a theist practices their religion. They shut away all things they consider foolish superstition because the only thing they feel the can rely on is the ground under their feet.
Personally, I don't believe in coincidences, my life has been far too remarkable, even at 16, and as cheesy as it may sound, everything does happen for a reason.

I do not know this idea you're talking about. Would you be so kind as to explain the cosmic door theory? And I do suppose everything happens for a reason, however, human perspective is far too limited for one to be able to perceive the intricacies that occur in every event and how they play out in the grand scheme of things. That is why it looks like nothing is happening or that nothing matters. We cannot see what happens.

well, I use the term "revolving door" as just a general reference to any reincarnation or afterlife concept. As for human perspective being too limited, i disagree. While this physical body, the lens through which we perceive the world around is limited, our conscious in not. Practitioners (specifically Buddhist, because that is what i am most familiar with, but I am sure there are other faiths) devote their lives into understanding just that. We may not SEE it, but we ARE able to conceive it in its entirety. Not a simple matter, but it all revolves around life and death. The Tibetan Book of he Dead ( A read i suggest to all of you, of all faiths) explains a pathway toward understanding death, and developing the skills needed to not only be good at living, but also the skills need for dying. My faith suggests that there have been many lives before us, there will be many lives ahead and there is nothing to fear in the transition period, as long as you are working toward purifying your karma, meaning negative actions accumulated in past lives. Of course, i'm not trying to convert anyone, but the concept remains. We believe that the people close to us in this life were close to us in past lives. for exaple your mother this life may have been your son in a past life, and in the next life they may be your uncle, like Christians believe that they will meet their loved ones in the afterlife as well. What I'm trying to stress is not the concept of reincarnation per say, as all religion, if practiced correctly and purely are a path toward enlightenment. individual faith in all-powerful beings is irrelevant, in all realms but this one, which we Buddhist call "Samsara", the physical stage of existance, and restless dimension. The Dimension of Suffering. Therefore, life is suffering and death holds no fear.
Enlightenmet defines the grasping of this very concept. The Buddha described himself as "awake" because of this.
Overstand?

I can understand that much better now. Thank you. Personally, I don't care too much about whether or not I have pas lives or if I will even get reincarnated. But, I do believe in living life to the fullest effect. I cannot uphold the idea that life is suffering. For how can we suffer if joy is not also a part of our lives? Therefore, happiness is a part of this life. Not that I will go and live in carnal pleasure, but I believe in using this life I have been given to do as much as I can, as much good as I can, as much of a difference as I can, so that I can leave this life without any regrets. Fun is just a part of that. If I can do that much, I can be satisfied. Enlightenment is a perpetual state to me as well. I do not believe in it being in a single moment, but continually adding upon itself from that moment onwards. But, I do not know how buddhists interpret enlightenment.

Hmm. A discussion about coinkidinks, eh? Well, in the poll, you asked, "Have you ever had a prophetic dream?"
Why, yes, Kefke, I have. In fact, you're looking at a very large source of phophecies. I have predicted corretly....Ten out of twelve scenarios. "She's lying." you think? Well, no, I am not! I never lie, unless it'll save my or someone I care about's(although thats a rare thing) life. If you still think I'm lying, is there any chance I will be killed here? No. I have predicted the birth of my sister, my older sister's miscarriage, my brother's death, my older sister commitig suicide because her consort and child died, my younger sister's rise to royalty, the birth of the heir, my mother's miscarriage, my neice dying(little b***h was drunk driving), her parent's death, and me being sent to the insane asylum. No, we have noooo idea why the hell I was sent there, but as you can see, it did not help whatever it was supposed to, unless the object was to make me insane.

So, I am a veritable prophet, and you should all be licking my boots.

Okay, I'm here...

Hmm...tempting.

Personally, despite the stastical evidence that everyone is entitled to one annual dream mimicking a future event, I believe in prophesy. I also believe in miracles...having personally experienced a person being brought back from the dead. (No I don't care to elaborate. It was a very personal thing, there are painful memories attached, and I wish to protect the identity of the other person involved.)

...what were your other two wishes?

oh thats interesting. I understnad that you want ot protect their identity, but I'm overly open on the internet.

I was hit by a car, and I was sent to the hospital, and I was listed as DOA(dead on arrival for idiots) and when I was about to be autopsied, I woke up. The blade to cut me open was a half an inch away from killing me. The skin over my stomache was open enough for me to now know that my stomach is a lovely purple color.

As you may well know, I was rushed to the OR(operating room idiots) to have surgery to fix the internal injuries, as well as the new flaps that could open and close to expose and hide my tummy.

Now, whenever I have to be in a car, I refuse to get in unless I can drive. When I'm in the street, I am overly paranoied. I cross when no cars are even close to being able to hit me, and I run.Really fast. My sister says that if we get a mile long cross walk, I'd beat the record for mile dash.

I just can't help it. I don't think you'd want to be hit by a car twice.

There's an interesting story by Stephan king, this guy was bit by a snake, and he was paralyzed. They thought he was dead, and that it was a heart attack that killed him.

He tried to get them to notice that he was still alive, but the only thing he could do was make a quiet humming noise. He had given that up when they turned on the radio. When he was examined for scars, there was on that started on his bum, and went around to his...Manly parts. The doctore(who was remale) was moving his d*** to get a better look at the scar, and was rubbing it wthout knowing, and when an intern walked in, he asked, "Geez doc, you trying to rub him back to life?" and she looked down and saw it was monstly erect, they suddenly realized, he was alive.

he and the doctor dated for a bit, but they broke up because of the fact they weren't sexually compatable.

He was impotent unless she wore rubber gloves.
