The fall of a Utopian society.
The teen years is about the age when kids are able to realize that the world they live in is not perfect. They have ideal thoughts of what a perfect world should be like and began to rebel because of this fact. Our children must inherit an imperfect world. Stories likes these help children understand that the idea of a perfect world can be destructive. We hate war and feelings of animosity for other people. With out it well there would be far more regulations and restrictions on us. Much of our liberties we have would be lost. We would find new ways to suffer.

No, that's not it unfortunately... I read that more recently... never realized how depressing it was... they sure expect kids to read some dark books...
