Welcome to the Mechanical Children of Gaia I'd first like to welcome you to the guild -- whether you are just a visitor or a new member doesn't matter. Anyone new, a Mechanical Child or not, is more than welcome to reside behind these walls. This thread is here to do more than just welcome, but to shed light on what the guild has to fully offer (or has the potential offer, in some cases). Read through the posts below for a relatively quick run through about the guild.
This is a thread that will be constantly updated with information on progress of the guild and any Gaian news (plot or site related) that we find important to share. Please keep peeking into this thread to see what is new and what is up and coming.

What is a Mechanical Child? The term "Mechanical Child" was coined with the construction of G.U.N., Gaia's United Nation Guild in 2008. The guild had regulations and requirements for what constituted as a "race", and unfortunately the robot race was not included on the list. In order to establish it as a race, I had to get a petition with enough signatures in order for it to be listed as official. While I constructed the petition, I as a cyborg wondered if I could get not only robots, but cyborgs and androids listed officially as well. It took some time to come up with a name that encompassed all three.
Then it came to me -- all three races were created with machinery. Born by machines, they were therefore children of machinery. And after a few adjustments, the name Mechanical Children, too, was born.
But what IS a Mechanical Child. Yes, they are either a robot, cyborg or an android, but those terms are loosely used in modern days. So below I have provided definitions to make any clarifications.
-----
A robot is a mechanical or virtual artificial agent. It is usually a system, which, by its appearance or movements, conveys a sense that it has intent or agency of its own.
While there is still discussion about which machines qualify as robots, a typical robot will have several, though not necessarily all of the following properties:
* is not 'natural', i.e. it is artificially created * can sense its environment, and manipulate or interact with things in it * has some ability to make choices based on the environment, often using automatic control or a preprogrammed sequence * is programmable * moves with one or more axes of rotation or translation * makes dexterous coordinated movements * appears to have intent or agency
-----
A cyborg is a cybernetic organism (i.e., an organism that has both artificial and natural systems). Fictional cyborgs are portrayed as a synthesis of organic and synthetic parts, and frequently pose the question of difference between human and machine as one concerned with morality, free will, and empathy. Fictional cyborgs may be represented as visibly mechanical or as almost indistinguishable from humans.
They also often have abilities, physical or mental, far in advance of their human counterparts (military forms may have inbuilt weapons, amongst other things). Real cyborgs are more frequently people who use cybernetic technology to repair or overcome the physical and mental constraints of their bodies. While cyborgs are commonly thought of as mammals, they can be any kind of organism.
---
An android is a robot designed to resemble a human, usually both in appearance and behavior. The word derives from ανδρός, the genitive of the Greek ανήρ anēr, meaning "man," and the suffix -eides, used to mean "of the species; alike" (from eidos, "species")
Unlike the terms robot (a "mechanical" being) and cyborg (a being that is partly organic and partly mechanical), the word android has been used in literature and other media to denote several different kinds of artificially constructed beings:
* a robot that closely resembles a human * an artificially or synthetically created being that closely resembles a human; also referred to in many series (mostly anime) as Bio Android

Mechanical Children Activities As of now the guild is small, but I hope for it to grow with people who call this place home away from home.. There is a list of things that I hope to accomplish with the help of members. I hope to get your opinions to make this guild the best it can be, and perhaps even one day be recognized by the Aekeans of Gaia that we cherish.
---
Storyline - 3 Months after a confrontation between the Rebels and OmniDrink caused the Crane to collapse onto the town, Aekeans are split between the factions, or have become prisoners of war.
ATP - I am working on creating building descriptions for non-user businesses. Crunchy Munchies! will be doing banners. If you are a user with a store and want to put input in your banner, please PM her.
Ticket Rally! - We are trying to get as many tickets as we can for one of our own, Frogger. She is questing PillowMan we want to be able to help her by getting her tickets!

Aekea Affiliates and Relations
The Mechanical Children is not the only guild or thread on Gaia that supports Aekea in any form. While we do focus more so on the mechanics of the town, there are many places that deserve credit where credit is due. So below I have created a list of places that, if you want to show more support to Aekea, you should check out.
If you have any threads to put in here yourself, send me a PM with the link and I would be more than happy to put it up here!-;-;-
Aekea's Army - A guild filled with Aekea supporters. While mostly inactive, during town related events the activity really picks up.
Aekea - A guild that is more or less inactive and has been for almost a year. Nevertheless it is an Aekean guild.
[ Aekea ] - A guild with constant inner guild story plots, contests, and really swell activity. A recent reincarnation of the original Aekea Town Guild.
ICW Territory: Mid-Aekea Championship Wrestling - A guild in the works for some sort of wrestling championship. Will update this information once I get a reply from the owner as to the progress.
The Robots of Gaia - A thread supporting the robot NPCs of Gaia. A great informational thread for all MCs. I highly recommend this despite it's inactivity.
Aekea Town Project - A thread started by me to gain attention to the Aekea Town Project last summer in 2008. While it is filled with older information now, I will be redoing things for the second round of ATP.
Let's win one for Aekea! - A thread from the Water Balloon Festival made by Liam. Not useful, but nostalgic.
The Pit Stop - A thread in Gaia Commerce I made to roleplay out my shop, The Pit Stop. In the works of starting this up again, also.
Edy's Betties - A fan thread for Edy, the Aekean NPC made known from the first annual Gaia Prom
Official Aekea Support Thread - A thread used by Aekea supporters to talk to each other in the GCD during the Rejected Olympics.

That's great! If you like writing, you're going to love it here. You don't NEED to offer drawing, but if you see something you'd like to draw, go for it. I'm just excited to see a new member who wants to do something. ^_^
You wouldn't find one if you magnified, because you got the wrong girl.

The word derives from ανδρός, the genitive of the Greek ανήρ anēr, meaning "man," and the suffix -eides, used to mean "of the species; alike" (from eidos, "species") Unlike the terms robot (a "mechanical" being) and cyborg (a being that is partly organic and partly mechanical), the word android has been used in literature and other media to denote several different kinds of artificially constructed beings: * a robot that closely resembles a human * an artificially or synthetically created being that closely resembles a human; also referred to in many series (mostly anime) as Bio Android Might I also point out as a former electronic engineering technician that the term "robot" implies artificial intelligence, although I personally assume this is due to the influence of SF novels, movies, TV series, and anime/manga. So, for the purposes of your definition, why don't we include some degree of intelligence, relegating all non-AI-equipped 'robots' to the category of 'automata'? Thus an industrial robot arm that assembles automobiles but is not aware of its surroundings beyond the location of both car and parts would be an automaton, but a construct such as Aibo would qualify as a 'robot' for purposes of this discussion, nyao. Also, "biological androids", or "bioroids", would technically come under the heading of cloned or bioengineered beings rather than androids per se, so to clarify your definition of "android", perhaps we should stick to the strictly inorganic--thus, LCDR Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation would qualify as an android, but the Replicants from Blade Runner, due to the fact that they are synthetic organic beings, wouldn't, being an example of bioroids under strictest definition. And, for purposes of completeness, the term "robot" was coined by Czech playwright Karl Copek for his play R.U.R., or Rossum's Universal Robots, from the Czech word "robota", meaning "forced labor" or "slave" if I'm not mistaken. (Although technically the "robots" of R.U.R. would probably be better described as bioroids...)
