User Image Raruo was doing his usual rounds around the pride perimeter, making sure all was safe and well. He enjoyed spending the time alone, eyes scanning the surrounding area for danger, keeping a look out for outsiders and interacting with what few rogue creatures wandered near their lands. He hadn't been in a fight for a while now, which was a bit off putting, but the relative peace of the days was easy to blame.

He often watched the hunts, and did what he could to help when he was invited to. One of his favorite occupations was helping the hunters and huntleaders herd the prey toward their deaths. It wasn't something he had done in a little while, and he wondered if they were hunting anything that might be fun to chase today.

Though he generally knew most of the members of the pride, by sight or reputation at the very least, he wasn't the best at putting names to faces. He rarely bothered making friends, and he often greeted others with a nod of his head, which was enough for him. They should be glad to get that at all, anyway.

He had no qualms about just ignoring people completely.

The hunt that morning had gone well and they had brought back enough food for who needed to be fed along with a bit of extra for themselves. It was common to burn off most of your energy for the day during a hunt and most of them were not above eating more than others to keep up with the demand.

She could still taste the prey's flesh as she padded back toward the edges of the pride. Another hunt was not necessary but that was no reason to not see where the herds had gone. From the right vantage point she could see great expanses of the savanna.

She had not expected to see another of the Claw blocking her view. She did not know his name more than it began with an R but she knew who he was. Clearing her throat she smirked under the mask of bone over her face.

Raruo turned at the sound, spotting the hunt leader moving toward him. He nodded at her, knowing her by reputation and description more than personal interaction. Of course he had seen her at gatherings, and had a couple of times helped with the hunt, but they had never spoken directly. It just had never seemed necessary.

He tilted his head at the mask of bone, wondering what her reasons were for wearing it. He knew a lot of members of the pride were adorned similarly, or with furs or feathers and other such things. He, however, had never really felt the need to don any such decorations. His coat was enough, he thought, and he couldn't help but think himself impressive as is.

But he was just a little bit bias.

"Good day," he greeted off handily, as if he hadn't bothered to check if the day was, in fact, nice or not, "hunting again?"

"Mm .. not currently. I was on my way to see if the herds were still visible in the area." She paused an acceptable distance from him as she spoke. The day was indeed good even if she could smell rain coming. The hunt was over so there was no need to worry about that.

She could see his eyes wandering to her mask and just managed not to smirk to herself. There were not many who knew it's meaning outside of the hunters close to her and she was not likely to volunteer the information.

"There is nothing to worry about is there?" She didn't know why he would be out in this direction at the time. There were no near by prides to keep an eye on.

Raruo shook his big head, his thinning mane poofing out a bit with the action. He looked around at the serene lands, a bit distant and with a vague smile on his face. It was gone as soon as it came, and had been so slight it might not have been there at all. He tilted his head back at her.

"No, nothing to worry about. I was just patrolling for the sake of it, really. Never a bad idea to keep an eye on everything, even if it seems like it's harmless. Could be considered a weak point, though I highly doubt anything with that mentality is going to be sneaking in any time soon." He sighed, wondering if that sounded a bit too much like he wanted someone to wander in so he could beat the crap out of them and not be bored anymore.

Nah.

"That was mostly a lie," he confessed without prodding, "I like coming where it's quiet to train and think."

She listened to what he had to say before smirking herself. Males. In one way or another they were always either looking for ways to make themselves seem stronger or trying to embellish their strength with words. It was so much easier to actually -be- what everyone expected you were. Even if that did mean most found her hard to deal with.

"It is easy to see the herds from here." She looked out where she could just see antelope on the horizon. "Easy to watch their movements and plan for hunts." And the usual quiet made it easier to let hunts formulate themselves in her head.

Raruo followed her gaze, nodding. He liked watching the hunts, and helping when he could. It seemed like an active, interesting way to serve the pride. Maybe he was beginning to get jealous of the younger folk, a sense of restlessness settling into his limbs that he could scarcely keep staved off during the day. It was worse at night, when his mind was awake but no one else was, and seemed even to seep into his dreams. At least in there he was active and useful.

He sat in quiet for a while, not really knowing how to carry a conversation. He often avoided them, or utilized one of his most finely practiced skills to get him through: sarcasm. This didn't seem the time or place for it, though, and he didn't feel like he even wanted to. A bit subdued, the older lion shook his meaty head and sighed.

"What do you do to keep yourself occupied between hunts?" he asked abruptly, tilting his head.

"I don't often." She laughed softly. Tipping her head down she let the skull she wore almost constantly slip off her head and between her paws. It was a easier to see him without looking directly at him this way. "I feel ... restless when not hunting so i often burry myself in something related to it."

Whether that was hunting again or just scouting the herds. She had to make sure she was always able to keep ontop of her game if she expected to keep her position. Even if it was a bit stressful at times.

Raruo watched her, eyebrows slightly raised as her skull slipped off. He had thought she was one of those 'this never comes off' types, though he supposed he had no basis for that assumption. He tilted his head, nodding as she spoke.

"I can understand that," he scoffed a bit, flicking his tail behind him, "makes sense, too. I'm the same, really. Training or patrolling the borders. Not much for filling my time with company or conversation. Things like that don't appeal to me, I guess."

The older lion blinked.

"Except, like, right now."

She smirked and chuckled softly. His slight bit of back peddling had been amusing at least if nothing else.

"When one dedicates their life to a specific task it is often hard to find things to talk about that are not related. And if the other party isn't interested in the subject then there is no point in things being said." She nodded slightly. "Most times it is easier to forgo conversationsl"

Raruo ventured a lopsided smile, his perennial grumpiness ebbing ever so slightly at his own expense. He knew he had looked a bit silly, but he was unused to casual conversation, so he couldn't be blamed. At least she was easier to talk to than some of the other pride members. Generally he had an excuse for his bad mood, by way of their attitudes, but she seemed indifferent and he had no problem with that.

Except now he couldn't use sarcasm against her, because it wasn't warranted.

"That's definitely true. And one dedicates their life to a specific task, then isn't as exposed to that task as much, it's near impossible to think about anything else. Same theory, just applied in a more... annoyingly specific situation," he sighed, tilting his big head as he mused. He grinned at the sentiment she brought up, though.

"I am very much a fan of that idea. I tend not to talk to anyone, if I can help it. Not because I think they're boring or I'm better than them, though I'm sure that plays into it, too. It's just... less annoying."

"That it is." She found it far less annoying to just not talk to the other clans rather than try to force herself into a conversation she cared nothing about. Some things just had no interest in her life and she did not wish to hear about others plights in them.

Though she was not always against those conversations. She enjoyed hearing about the sacrifices and the readings that came from them.

Raruo nodded.

Sighing, he knew he should probably get off his lazy butt and get back to wandering around the pride. Another thought entered his head, a distraction that he hadn't wondered about until now. He thought about that lioness that had been out just beyond the borders, and found himself wanting to know if her paw had healed, or gotten swollen.

But he didn't know if she would be there.

Getting grumpy again for no reason, or at least not one he had the wherewithal to discern, he bowed his head at his company as he looked over his shoulder.

"I should go take another look around. There's some kind of unrest in the air, and it's got my fur up. Probably nothing. It was... uh... nice talking to you." That was almost polite, right? Better than just getting up and walking away.

"It was not a displeasure, at least." She leaned her head down and after carefully tipping her skull up placed it back over her head. She could return to her watch of the herds and hope that another good opportunity presented itself soon.

There was something in the air but so far she had been able to make the lack of prey work. It was no bothering her, yet

Raruo almost smiled, but caught himself just in time. Couldn't go ruining his reputation so easily, after all. But he did like her company, and admired her strength. So there was no real shame in saying a proper goodbye, which of course he didn't do because even when he was thinking about how to have a normal conversation he failed to put the theory into application.

"See you around," he mumbled instead of the respectful parting phrase that was flitting around uselessly in his head. He lumbered off, continuing the path he had started on. He still felt restless, but was beginning to wonder if it wasn't him at all, but something else.

Sighing, he moved his mind to the tasks at hand, rather than dwelling on hypotheticals. He padded off, to take one good look around the pride.
