Okay, I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, I probably have asked it but can you call apon a diety, Lady Epona is who I am directing at, for another person?
Also.
How many familiars can a person have? I have about 4. Or can you only have 1?
ALSO...
Do you know what certain familiars stand for, ie; the rat. ? thanks for concidering my never ending list of questions.

Is there any way that a person can communicate with a animal on a mental level?

Secondly: Sure you can have multiple familiars. While many feel closely bonded to a specific animal, you can definitely have more than one familiar, and love them all equally.
Thirdly: I tend to consider familiars as literal "furry friends", and therefore the physical forms are not as important. However, certain species of animal represent specific things. You can look up animal symbolism and see if what you find fits the animal in mind. The rat, as you mentioned, has generally the following symbolism:
Fertility
Wealth
Timidity
Meanness
Wisdom
Prudence
Foresight
Shrewdness
Restlessness
Success
Fear
Socialization
Different people think different things, so it's a generalization. Also, different cultures idolize or despise different things, so you'll have to form your own opinions on it.
Lastly: Yes, you can communicate on a mental/spiritual level with your familiars. I have a cat who I love very dearly (though he does get jealous of the other 3 cats he rooms with if I pet them and not him), and we do have a strong mental bond. For example, if I'm going to be home at four, he will be waiting for me, and he basically knows how to read me very well. I often think he is not -really- a cat at all.
You can also have spirit animals (aka power animals, animal spirit guides, astral familiars, etc) that are not physically with you, although they ARE with you. These sometimes function as familiars, and sometimes just as educational guides. (These can be any sort of creature from rabbit to pegasus, as shape and form is not limited in the astral.)

on that last note, i think i have an astral familiar. it's a sorta scaly pinkish dragon-like snake, with large claws, even though it slithers. it usually only shows up when i am NOT in my home, and i just kinda know that if i told it to, it would go bite someone and make them sick, but at one point, it bit my achilles tendon, with the intent to energize me. it only partially worked, but it was something interesting.

Wow, that help me a lot! Because the rat is my 'basic' so to say, familiar. I can go up to basically the "meanest rat in school" and he'll be a lovey to me. No one understands it. Niether do they understand why I can't handle mice in the same way. I live with 2 rats and one of mine that lives at a friends.
But when I said communicate I meant them litterally talking to me. Like when I enter the room I can hear them and most of the time I didn't know it was them.
Another note, I am the only kid in the school that could go up to any animal and instantly be friends with it. (Believe me, not all of them are friendly with others.) I just don't get it. It makes me wonder but I don't abandon it. My teacher said I speak animal. It was kind of scary coming from an 'old' guy. When people ask me I just tell them I act with the same behavior as another animal of that species would.
(I go to a high school that has a 3 milion dollar agricultural wing. We have a goat, pig, rats, mice, chinchillas, (my) snake, dogs, a bunch of black kittens, rabbits and lots of fish.) On another note, I have been seeing a coyote/wolf. Just been glancing this way, and there she is. She's told me things. (strange I know) Like don't enter the graveyard. We'll me and my friends did (much to my hesitation) and a tree had fallen over blocking our path. (it was really stormy out earlier) So I freaked, they freaked and we just bolted after I had told them. She shows up alot. I just don;t know what to call her.

Sometimes you just have animals that "click", and I guess the rat to you is like that. So wait, you hear them "speaking english" or something? Hmm, interesting. My mother is convinced I can "speak" cat, and often calls me the 'cat-whisperer', because she (or whoever) can be asking a cat to get off the counter, and they won't budge, but if I ask they get down right away, no hesitation. It isn't like I hear them speak so much as I 'understand' them, but perhaps you have strong shamanic...tendencies? Not the right word... (Wow, I envy your school. Ours is big, but not like THAT...) The wolf, is she a literal wolf, or otherwise? In any case, she appears to be a guardian of yours, and I would definitely heed her warnings in the future. Sounds like you were lucky earlier, not to get hurt.

but i have a budgie and a dog.. not a good mix
anyway, I tried to see if my dog is my fimiliar... shes not.. but id much rather a cat....
