The days that had continued left her extremely tired. It took a lot out to grant the wishes and dreams of a few hopefuls, even if she had done no such thing yet.

It had been Casa Tiner that she'd taken solace in. The voices were comforting; especially that one of her long dead lover whispering in her ear. Eventually there were footsteps. Receding ones, and for a while they called to her to come.

But she wouldn't fall for that one. It was quite obvious where her lover was going, and she would have no part in it. Plus, she'd indirectly killed the Nequus. Nothing good ever came from the dead. She should know.

Today, she didn't even grin at her statement. Pulling herself up from the sticky dew, she let the light hit her coat. It was easy to stay safe in Casa Tiner if you only went in and came out.

So that's what she did. Weaving between sunny reality and colors of . . . whatever Casa Tiner was.

That was the time she spotted them. One frightful looking mare hiding under another's protection. For a while, she merely watched them. It was almost perfect had it not been laced with secret lies and unkown faults like every relationship. Perhaps they knew that, and perhaps that was why they were safe. When they were perhaps close enough to shout in her direction, she turned abruptly back into the forest. She didn't go very far; only so much as that she could just barely hear their footsteps as they came close. But they'd come looking, and it was a habit she'd gotten herself into to make them venture in.

It messed with their heads. Those of them who still had minds that was.

The devil was walking away.

Elphaba narrowed her eyes and stared into the gloom. She disliked dark, thick forests at the best of times, and this one was not the wisest one into which to wander. Strange visions tormented any who set foot in the forests of Casa Tiner, and few who went in - or so she had heard - ever came out again.

"Elphie, was that - "

"Yes," Elphaba answered at once. "That was the mare we're after. I'm sure of it. Nothing else looks like that."

"But...she walked into the forest..."

Glinda's expression was one of distinct worry. Elphaba shook the mist out of her mane. "She did. But she had to be standing outside to walk in - trust me, my sweet, that was no illusion. It's her."

"That wasn't what I meant," Glinda said with a shake of her head. "I mean...now we have to go in after her, don't we? And that place is full of dangerous magic."

"We don't have to," said Elphaba darkly.

But Glinda stared her down.
"I'm not letting you go in there without me. This is for me. I know you, and I know you never particularly wanted to be a parent of any sort. I know you're only doing this for me. I'm not going to be such a bloody coward that I can't go in with you."

Silence reigned for a few seconds. Finally, Elphaba closed her eyes and sighed. "...If you start to see things," she said quietly, settling her wing more comfortably around Glinda, "close your eyes and walk blind. I'll guide us."

Nodding, Glinda fell into step beside Elphaba as they headed into the shadow of the trees. She swallowed down a lump of fear. Everything would be fine. If she saw anything bad she'd just shut her eyes - Elphie wouldn't have a problem with visions. It was hard enough to get her to believe what she saw or heard at the best of times.

As they stepped through the first line of conifers, the light began to fade. Glinda wasn't sure she'd be able to see much in this light anyway. She'd never been good in poor light. Elphie, though, she could fly at night. On bright days she'd squint and duck her head under one wing. They came from very different worlds, worlds that didn't always meet well. Still, they covered each other's weaknesses rather nicely. Like now, for instance.

Even as they stepped into danger, Glinda allowed herself a little smile. At last, Elphie was beginning to realise that wrapping her in cotton wool was no good for either of them. The next step would be to make her realise how strong her lover could be, if she put her mind to it.
