Area 21 -> Level 3 -> Lab 309
Aijou's lab has a large desk at one end of the room, constantly piled with stacks of various papers. Several large file cabinets stand along the back wall. In the center of the room there is a stainless steel table for examining specimens and other work, and a marble topped table stands beside it, holding various instruments and other necessities of her work with animals.

Aijou stepped off the elevator and walked down the corridor to her lab. Unlocking the door, she walked inside and closed it behind her. She could still feel the distinct sensation that she was not alone, but she set to work anyway, arranging things for her work as she needed them.
"So much to be done..." she mused aloud to herself as she began placing files into the cabinets.

Entering her lab, Aijou walked to the exam table in the center of the room. She reached carefully into her pocket and lifted out the tiny gray mouse. Stroking its head lovingly, she set it in a small box on the table.
"Don't you worry little one, everything will be alright..." she whispered softly as she took a small syringe from the counter. With extreme care, she injected the contents of the syringe into the little mouse. Her efforts were so meticulous that the creature didn't so much as squeak. Stroking its little head again, she lifted her companion to her shoulder where it sat contentedly, nibbling a bit of cheese.

Whisper slowly opened the door to her lab. Months had passed since last she had been here. Unsure even of the status of her job, she hesitated in the doorway. Perhaps she should speak to someone before resuming her work...then again, perhaps not, perhaps it was better if it remained unnoticed. She could feel the familiar wriggling of her little mouse in her labcoat pocket, and she reached in to pat its little head reassuringly.
"There there, my little darling, everything will be alright. They probably won't even notice we are here." she said, smiling softly at the little creature. In response, the little mouse reached up a tiny paw and placed it on her hand, in a way that bespoke something more than animal intelligence.
Whisper nuzzled the mouse fondly against her cheek. The tiny animal seemed to be the one being that truly enjoyed her presence. She was extremely pleased with how well her experiments were progressing, and turned once more to the computer terminal at her work station, anxious to see it all through before anything could interfere.

Whisper jolted suddenly awake, only then becoming aware that she had fallen asleep. Breathing heavily, she tried to stand, only to fall back into her seat. The echos of her nightmare had already faded beyond her recollection. Panic struck her momentarily as she looked around her, frantic for the safety of both her little companion and the work she had begun before sleep took her so suddenly. A tiny squeak from her pocket answered one of her concerns, but the other was more reluctant to subside. Nothing seemed to have been disturbed, but she felt disoriented, unsure of how much time had passed that anyone could have walked in. A quick glance at her computer showed the system had locked itself automatically, and that brought her some measure of relief. Trying again to stand, she stepped shakily toward the door. She could not even remember the last time she had taken food or drink. Hoping that her usual tendency to go unnoticed would hold, she stepped out into the hall, and made her way quietly to the cafeteria for something to eat and drink.

Whisper sat down at her terminal and set to work. Meticulously updating all of her notes and findings would be critical when it came to light what she had done. Even she was not yet sure how this experiment would ultimately end, but one thing WAS certain. Nezumi was now far more than an ordinary mouse. The most recent readings showed at least 25% of her DNA mutated after the last treatment.
Whisper stood and turned to the table where her instruments lay. She selected a sterile needle from a basket of them, and proceeded to draw a syringe full of blood from her arm. She quickly transferred the contents into a vial and capped it. Time to ready the next serum.

As was becoming seemingly a habit with her, Whisper once again startled awake at her work station. Something was definitely not right....It was quiet, TOO quiet....Suddenly she realized the sound that was missing. Nezumi. Feeling a wave of panic, Whisper jumped up from her chair and frantically began to search the lab. The door to Nezumi's cage stood open, and it was all too obvious that it hadn't taken the intervention of anyone else.
"Nezumi!" she called out, not caring now if anyone else in their labs heard her. "Nezumi!!" She repeated, knocking over a rack of vials in her search.
Shoving aside one of the filing cabinets, Whisper could see a hole in the wall. She knew that's where Nezumi had gone, it was just a question of how far. She took a flashlight from the counter nearby and shined it into the hole. Immediately she saw a glint of red in the darkness. Red...RED? No, that was wrong. Nezumi's eyes were black....
"What is going on here?...Come out from there, Nezumi..." She told the mouse firmly. The creature simply stared back at her, almost defiantly, and shook her head. "Come now, what has gotten INTO you?...This isn't like you at all!"
Carefully as she could, Whisper lifted a hand to the hole, and reached inside. No sooner did she feel the brush of fur against her hand than a searing pain tore through the back of it. She grasped the little mouse anyway, trying to pull it from the hole, but it wriggled free from her now slippery and bloodied fingers.
"Oh God...NO!..." Terror filled her as she turned and ran for the alarm panel on the wall. She screamed out as the wave of pain started to expand through her body. The last thing she heard was the wail of the alarm as she slapped a hand against the panel, trying to warn the facility of the danger.

*The Security Golem Vault appeared through the door to lab 309, the focused energy in the chamber of her gun arm at peak and ready for anything. Vault took a quick look over the room and took note of Whisper, then approaching her cautiously*
What occurrance here has merited a system alarm?
*While awaiting the answer, she took note of cages and misplaced items about the lab*

Whisper heard someone enter...thought she did...but was it real? She had no idea how long she had lain there on the floor. Trying to lift her head, she winced hard as fresh pain stabbed through it. There was blood...her hand...NEZUMI...
"I...my experiment...." she tried to stammer out. Her eyes did not want to focus, but she thought it must be vault in front of her...the glare off her metallic boots..."She is loose...changed... I..."
Whisper knew she wasn't making sense, knew she was in trouble, knew that there was potentially ALOT of trouble, but the details were so fuzzy. Her head throbbed...She tried to show the wounds on her hand to Vault, the sick black color of the drying blood turning her own stomach as she did so.
"Nezumi...have to find her..." she mumbled weakly, falling again to her knees as she tried to stand.

*Vault reached out to Whisper with her arm, waiting for the fleshy to take hold and lift up*
There are no experiments registered to this lab. What class of creature is this?

Whisper reached up with her other hand, taking hold of Vault's arm. She got to her feet slowly, still trying to clear her head.
"She is a mouse...well...was..but..." she hesitated, trying to think of how to explain any of this. "She has...half-human DNA....she is more now. I wanted a friend..."
Even in her own ears the excuse sounded so pathetic, and she knew it would not help her. Whatever the case, she cared so much for Nezumi. She wanted her to be alright, not like...like THIS.

Half mouse, and half... human? Surely the specimen has died, and there is some sort of misunderstanding...?

"She didn't die, she was...adjusting, to it. I was making notes, and I fell asleep. When I woke she was gone. Nobody else came in here...she let herself out of her cage." Whisper explained.
"Over there, behind the file cabinet, she was in that hole in the wall. She was tunneling and I tried to get her...she...TURNED on me...bit me several times. I couldn't hold onto her. I don't think she's dead at all"
Walking over to the place where the mouse had disappeared, she looked inside. There was no sign of Nezumi there, and she could already see that the hole now went quite a way farther than it had at first.
"I know it sounds wrong, but she..eats meat now. Red meat. She would have to get hungry and go for food." she thought out loud

You should get that looked at then, bites from mutations never seem to go well with you beings of flesh. I will seek out this creature and exterminate it. It can not have gotten to far on its own...

Whisper looked down at her hand, and then back up at Vault. Nezumi could not die, not now, not when she was the first of her kind. There was no telling how self aware she had become by now. There were so many questions...
"Kill her?! But how can you even say such a thing? She is unique, her own SPECIES. That would be genocide! Please don't kill her, PLEASE! At least let me find out if she really has gone out of control, or if she had a REASON. I know it sounds stupid, but she can THINK."
