Okay, so my school district is facing what could be a $7 mil shortfall next year, and so they are considering moving to a 4-day week. This, supposedly, moves the teacher's prep period to outside the school day. What this does, in turn, is eliminates music and PE from the elementary schools. Which is bullshit. And that's not even the best part.
This 4-day week is supposed to be the alternative to cutting positions or days. Guess what happened today? 20 teachers from OUR school get cut so they don't have to cut any in elementary. Now, our school is pretty big, but 20 teachers is too much. These teachers include, but are most certainly not limited to, the fine art teacher (there's another art teacher, but he teaches ceramics and jewelry), the choir teacher, and, as far as I know, all of the PE teachers. PE is a requirement to graduate, so how can they justify cutting all of the PE teachers? Also, at our school we have "career academies," where students choose a career pathway and are required to take electives that go with their career (eg. Arts/Communications, Health, Tech, etc.). How do they expect to have these academies when all of the teachers that teach the special classes are getting cut?
Oh, and don't forget that all of the music/PE elementary teachers are gone, too.
Plus, they want to cut band from middle school. Which is also bullshit. They don't need to. Our band wouldn't be what it is today without the middle school band program. But that's a whole separate argument.
