I was looking at Deathstars myspace blog today and they're new cd "Night Electric Night" is out now. Yay, Cool! I still like Synthetic Generation better, but, I thought of my freind who would thrilled about the release of the cd, yet irritated because one of the outlets for the new cd is Hot Topic.
Now what I want to discuss is:
Do you think that being sold at more mainstream outlets such as Hot Topic and Best Buy are selling out? Or do you see no problem whatsoever with selling cd's in whatever stores the artists feels like?

Depends on where and whether it's exclusive or not; as well as whether it was the band's choice or the record label's. So far, from what I've seen, usually when you find a post-industrial band in, say, an HMV it's because it was special ordered once and then the store decided to stock a bit of it. Depending on the sales of that, stock and selection would expand ten-fold not because of some exclusive deal, but because people are just legitimately interested in the music.

Yeah, a band being sold at a mainstream store is not selling out. Stores order their merchandise from a distributor..so if you are in a non mainstream band and your album gets bought from the distributor by a mainstream store, how is that your fault?

Also, i dont always consider a band that becomes more mainstream to really sell out. I mean, sometimes you can just become popular, and you didnt really mean to.

What i really consider selling out is when you compromise your own style/sound/image/etc just for money. (not to be confused with experimenting with ones own sound for self improvement)
For example (they are not industrial, but the biggest sellout band i can think of) SugarRay. Listen to their albums Floored, or even better, Lemonade and Brownies...there was like 1 sellout song on floored, but it was their next album they really sold out on. Worst part is...Mark Mcgrath hated the happy, pop s**t they did, but did it anyway... THAT is selling out

that's true. there have been alot of cases where bands have sold out. I do agree with you that selling at a more mainstream store doesnt mean you sell out. I just think it's somewhat humourous that my freind thinks that bands should be exclusive and that record company and lables should allow them to be.

LOL

My other example would be Rammstein.. they are popular and mainstream (or at least entered the mainstream for a while with Du Hast) BUT over in Germany, Rammstein kind of is like how popstars are here...

but, would anyone accuse Rammstein of selling out?

I dont really think so. They're not as popular here, but I remember I met a German Foreign exchange student that said Rammstein wasnt that popular, but he didnt really listen to any industrial related music at all. I dont know what they've done to be considered sell outs. You also have to remember that over in Europe, there isnt as much pop music like over here. If you have a large enough fan base and are popular there, then you are a pop star.
that's the way I see it.

lol where i had heard about the popularity of Rammstein in Germany was from my buddy who had talked to some of the german exchange students (lol i didnt stay in highschool)

I just think what happens is some overly-zealous industrial fans get so worried about bands selling out that they are too quick to decide a band has...kinda like the hypocondriac who is quick to declare they have angina after watching a special on heart conditions...

but as i stated in a rant elsewhere...some industrial fans do things like that....like if you dont fit in this tiny category music wise (which soooo defeats the point of industrial), and dont do things exactly this way, you arent industrial and/or you are a sellout

lol, yeah, just as it goes with people. I do agree with BakkusNexus in the myspace Kha0s A.I group that people are treated the same way, and there alot of people interested in joining the cyber/riven scene but are shunned because they have been listening to it for or nearly for decades.
