Ok guys so last week I was in this little family owned pet store looking for a new rat (Lulu passed last week, god rest her soul) and I spotted this bright pink, tiny, skinny, six month old rat all by in a cage. Needless to say I bought him.
A few days after I brought him home I noticed red blochy marks on his sides and tummy. I'm 100% sure their from his skin being sensitve, the bedding is causing them. I've already tried changing his bedding. I've used rat litters, newspaper, diffrent kinds of nontoxic shavings.....Nothings working. I even called up my local vet, he said its nothing to be worried about but still its causing him discomfort. He's scratching all the time. Any ideas on ANYTHING that he wouldn't have this reaction to? Or something to stop him from iching? Again he has extreamly sensitive skin so I can't use anything too powerful on him to relieve the iching.

They often get small scratches from the most harmless of shavings and their skin can get irritated at the slightest thing. However, I use fleece and I've had no trouble with my hairless, Faustus.

perhaps you should freeze the bedding before you use it, it will kill any bugs are mites before hand.

Deamond perhaps you should freeze the bedding before you use it, it will kill any bugs are mites before hand. That's a good idea, but Im pretty sure It's not from any kind of bugs. He just gets darker, blochy looking skin marks without any sort of bites. It HAS to be something in commen with the beddings I've tried but theirs nothing I can think of that's in all the diffrent things I've used. :-/

have you tryed just plain shreaded paper as the inks in newpaper can be bad for them

True, and with no hair it would be worse on him than a....hair-ed rat

Stick with carefresh ultra bedding (fleece is great if you don't mind washing it very frequently), try a different diet (he might be allergic to something in the blocks or some fresh food you give him), and rub some hydrocortisone cream on the rashes!
Did he have the rashes when you first bought him? if not, it's probably the change in diet.

I have two hairless, if he is really dry, try a bit of olive oil mixed with his food, it should improve in a few days. He probly has super dry skin.
