Nero, the White Mystery Friesian at Equitana 2007
March 21, 2007
The picture of the white Friesian that was published in Eurodressage's Equitana report earlier this week has caused quite a stir among readers worldwide. So, here's the story behind this unusual crowd-pleaser:
If you're familiar with Friesians, you know that some of them suffer from inbreeding problems. Thirty years ago, the German-based Hillner family received permission from the Dutch Queen to cross-breed several Friesian mares with Jalisco, an Arab stallion standing at stud at Gestuet Marbach, to get some fresh blood into the breed. Exactly one of the foals turned out grey -- a stallion named Negus. After he had spent the first twelve years of his life un-trained, he changed hands.
His new owner, Sylvia Parduhn, started schooling him and was very pleased with his "bomb-proof" character, which allowed her to start riding a stallion at this advanced age. Parduhn also bred several mares with him, and again, one of the foals turned out a grey stallion -- Nero, the now fourteen-year-old horse who impressed the Equitana crowds not only with his color but also with his exceptional gaits.
Parduhn, who runs a stable for holidaymakers near Fulda, was very happy to see that Negus had passed on his impeccable character to his son, and so she uses him to breed the pretty and character-sound horses she needs for her farm. She does show him at competitions occasionally, and he has earned one M- and several L-ribbons.
Nero is not a licensed stallion, however, and taking a look at his offspring, it is unlikely that he -- a three-quarter Friesian -- will become the sire of a new breed of white Friesians. So far, he has one son -- by a Trakehner mare -- who is a five-year-old pinto and will very probably turn completely white. Other than that, his offspring come in all colors -- and Nero remains one of a kind.

This is quite....interesting. Yet just thinking about a new breed of "white" Friesians just gives me chills xp . A small white star is enough for me. blaugh Friesians look better in black. xD So its odd that they're calling it a white "Friesian" the Friesian gene is reccesive so any color may be able to come out of a crossing, especially that far into a generation. Yet this article is interesting. But this was quite the cross. Thanks for sharing!

So basically your horses base color is either black or chestnut, but chestnut is recessive. In case youre wondering about bay, the gene for bay (agouti) resticts black to 'points' like the mane and tail, legs, muzzle, etc. A black horse has no agouti gene, and you cant tell what a chestnut has because it has no black to restrict. biggrin But to sum up, black is dominant, its just that black and chestnut are base colors, so all other colors, patterns, markings, and dilutions mask the base color.

Yeah, I was saying that the "friesian" gene is reccesive, most crosses will have little of the friesian gene, feathers, head, movement. Unless crossed with a gaited horse or one with feathers, but i'm not sure, never seen a friesianxsaddlebred or friesianxgypsy. xD Wow i mixed my self up with the color thing i said about the friesian gene being reccesive and then something about color, but i ment different things. I'm confusing myself. blaugh but I never knew that about colors before, thanks for telling. ^^

I saw a show recentlty on Animal Planet, that was about the Strange Animals in life, aka the Messengers. They animals were A white lions, a Yellow Alligator and a White Baboon. This could just be another one of those strange aka Messengers in the world. Something God has placed in the world to be different and leave everyone else at "awe" something to ponder upon, and love just for it's uniqueness. (:
