The North/Earth, West/Water, East/Air, South/Fire association made very little symbolic sense to me. This is what seemed more sensible...
Water - East The sun rises in the East. A new day is born. The dawn of life was in the water. So to my way of thinking, East should be associated with water.
West - Earth The sun sets in the West, and the day dies. When autumn arrives, the time when the Earth begins to 'die,' plants pull their juices and nutrients back into the ground.
North - Air At the North Pole, there is no ground at all. Just ice, water, and... sky. So, air seems to fit pretty well.
South - Fire The only one I agree with. wink
This is how it seems sensible to me. Disagree with me, share your thoughts, let me know how much of a nut I am or whatever. wink

I would venture that the correspondences between directions and elements reflect cultural associations which precede the magical structure which 'calling the quarters' represents. Of course, now I'm wracking my brain and thumbing books for where those correspondences we take for granted come from. I have heard of different assignments between the directions and elements: I got out my notes from when I was training with a coven and....there it was! an essay on a different system. The alternate system I have notes on has Air in the North and Earth in the East....not the same as your alternate.
So, yes, there are different systems of correspondences!

For me... the correspondence I use is based on the location of the celtic culture (mostly Europe).
West: the great sea, element of Water South: the warmer regions, element of Fire East: the great lands, element of Earth North: the wind lands, element of Air

Thank-you, Akabi! My notes didn't have a reference for the information, just that it was a difference based on the culture of origin.

Actually it was my bf who gave me the reference. He's not an... establisher follower, sort of, but he was raised with a family that was believing in fairies and spirits of nature, so he gives me good vibes all the time blaugh

GENE SIMMONS The Demon South / Fire He represents vengence and the fires of destruction and rebirth ACE FREHLEY The Scion of the Cosmos North / Air He is tapped into the wisdom of the Cosmos and can see all sides of a situation PETER CRISS West / Earth He represents the power of Nature and can speak to t he animal world. PAUL STANLEY East / Water He is the main counterbalance and represents LOVE in all it's forms and is the healer.

I'm not a KiSS fan, but your system there sounds as good as anything. mrgreen
Yes, I can see it now, associating everything from band members to Disney princesses with the elements. mrgreen

Methinks we need some threads that are fun.....like one devoted to how everything could be organized into foursomes based on elemental correspondences. In all seriousness, Deborah Lipp's "The Way of Four" (create elemental balance in your life) sets out to organize your personality through elemental correspondences. But we need not be so serious....

I always believed that air is east, fire is south, water is west, earth is north and the spirit is centre.

Those correspondences are quite traditional. Some of the other systems may be based on other cultural influences which people may be bringing into their practices.
Actually, I'm with you in my circle layout, also. When I trained with a Wiccan group different ways of ordering the colors and elements with directions were studied, though, as possibilities.
