This topic is for any myths/legends/suggestions you have for fighting a vampire.

To start: I once read that vampires are incredibly OCD and that if you spill seeds in their path they are compelled to pick up every single one, counting them as they do it. If they lose count, they start all over again. So this gives you time to run away.

Indeed. 3nodding

Much of the ancient lore assumes that vampires are easily confused or quickly distracted. Many tales suggest that if a vampire's grave is surrounded with salt, sand, or tiny seeds, the vampire must count all of the grains. Other tales suggest burying the corpse at a crossroads, for the vampire, upon rising from its grave, would be unable to choose which road to take. Still other tales suggest burying the corpse face down, for the vampire, upon awakening, would dig deeper into the earth, rather than toward the surface.

Here are some other ways to deter and destroy vampires:

A vampire abhors religions items and iconography, including Bibles, crosses, crucifixes, rosaries, holy water, holy oil, and Eucharist wafers.

A vampire is repelled by the odor of garlic.

A vampire is repulsed by the sight of a dog with an extra set of eyes painted above its real ones.

A vampires is allergic to silver.

A vampire cannot pass through a thicket of wild roses, especially those having been wrapped around the coffin. It would become entangled within the briars and, in effect, become chained to the grave for all eternity.

A vampire cannot cross running water.

A vampire can be killed by destroying its heart or removing its head. The most common method of destroying the heart is by driving a stake through its heart. The stake can be made from ash, hawthorne, maple, blackthorn, buckthorn or aspen. It is very important that the stake be driven through in one continuous blow, as a second blow may bring the vampire back to life. Another method is to cut out the heart and burn it. After removing the head, it is recommended that it be stuffed with garlic and reburied face down.

A vampire can also be killed by firing a blessed silver bullet into its heart.

A vampire can also be killed by driving silver nails into its temples, its navel, its forehead, and the back of its neck. Afterward, its veins must be sliced open with a silver dagger and its blood burned.

A vampire can also be killed by pouring boiling water into its grave while it sleeps.

That's all I can think about, right now. If I think of any more, I'll get back to you. wink

I've read that in the "far east" aka china, that things like holy water don't do nuthin to a vampire. I heard you have to use rosemary and the wafer does jack as well. there is a whole different set of rules for those guys (ancient chritianity didn't exist in china!).

I typically refer to Eastern European folklore, as that's what most people are familiar with.

In China, the vampire was known as a jiāngshī, or a hopping corpse. People protected themselves from jiāngshī by using salt or garlic. They were also driven away with loud noises, and it was thought that thunder could kill them. Brooms were used to sweep the creature back to its resting spot, while iron filings, rice, and red peas were used as barriers. It has also been said that the urine from chaste virgins (usually boys) can repel and even "corrosively burn" Chinese vampires, much like holy water. The rationale was that virgin boys (usually boys not yet of puberty age) are chaste, therefore bearing "pure Yang energy" (males are associated with Yang whilst females with Ying), which has an offensive effect on jiāngshī (which are also associated with Ying).

When a jiāngshī is destroyed, its body must be cremated.

I always wondered when and why the silver allergy thing came into being.
It always seemed more of a werewolf rule then a vampire rule. That and I always thought blessed christen weapons were kind of contradictory.

Silver has always been considered to have mystical and purifying properties. To its credit, silver ions and silver compounds show a toxic effect on many bacteria, viruses, algae, and fungi, typical for heavy metals like lead or mercury, but without the high toxicity to humans that are normally associated with these other metals. Its germicidal effects kill many microbial organisms in vitro. Unfortunately, testing and standardization of silver products is difficult. Its Latin name is argentum, which means "white" or "shining," and it is often associated with and represented by the moon. There are tales related to vampires, werewolves, witches, and other evil spirits that are known be repelled by silver.

There is also the theory, made popular by Wes Craven's Dracula trilogy, that vampires are descended from Judas Iscariot, who accepted 30 pieces of silver for his betrayal of Christ. It is said that he and all his unholy progeny abhor silver because it reminds them of the origin of their curse.
