I've read so many different ideas for what sunlight does to a vampire.
1. It makes them shine like a diamond (yeah right)
2. It weakens them, making them unable to use most of their powers
3. They fall asleep and don't wake up again until dark
4. It causes them to light on fire, and if they remain outside long enough kills them. (although in some stories, the older the vampire the less effect the sun has on them)

Has anyone heard of any other effects sunlight has? And which do you think is most likely?
I like my personal theory, that vampires just have very light sensitive skin and get really bad sun burns really fast. (which would explain the blackened skin, 3rd degree burns)

Vampires' vulnerability to sunlight was first fabricated in F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens. Until then, vampires were not harmed by sunlight. In Bram Stoker's 1897 gothic novel Dracula, which was heavily based on Eastern European folklore, Dr. Van Helsing, when describing the strengths, weaknesses, and limitations of vampires, says only that "[their] power ceases, as does that of all evil things, at the coming of the day," not that they are harmed by sunlight. Furthermore, Count Dracula is seen walking about during the day on at least three occasions throughout the course of the novel.

I don't really care whether or not a vampire is vulnerable to sunlight, although I believe that both books and movies can use vampires' vulnerability to sunlight in a variety ways to produce a more compelling narrative. However, I do not think Stephanie Meyer's "sparkly vampires" were a good idea.

I thought the sparkly vampire thing was just stupid! The only reason for it was the love story. How pretty!!!(blah). I never could never really reason why vampires would be "allergic" to the sun. I argee with Eiko, being very fair skinned myself. After a few hours of lawn mowing I tend to have a bad burn! Even on cloudy days!! In all vampire "lore" they are very pale. So I guess sunlight is unpleasant for them for extended periods.

Incorrect. In folklore, vampires were often said to be bloated in appearance, and ruddy, purplish, or dark in color. These characteristics were often attributed to the recent drinking of blood. Indeed, blood was often seen seeping from the mouth and nose when one was seen in its shroud or coffin and its left eye was often open. It would be clad in the linen shroud it was buried in, and its teeth, hair, and nails may have grown somewhat.

The important thing to remember about vampires is that we cannot change lore into law, especially when lore changes from age to age, country to country, person to person. When Dr. Van Helsing says, in Dracula, that "All we have to go upon are traditions and superstitions," he is quite right.
