WHOOSH!

Kyllae could hardly recall having more fun in her life. On dragon-back, airborn and moving faster than she thought possible. Haanyath, while somewhat odd looking and strange on land, was quite adept in the air. She gripped T'ka tightly, who sat in front of her. Kyllae was well aware that, were she not strapped down, she would have been thrown from Haanyath's back in a wink. As it was, she was very firmly rooted to the back of the strong green, and wasn't going anywhere. Sitting tightly (Did she really have a choice) she was passanger to a daring series of swoops, loops, dives and dashes that left her out of breath, though she hadn't done a thing! When her cousin had offered to take her on a ride, she'd been excited, but she'd hardly been expecting something like this!

By the time they landed, in a patch of empty grass nearby the feeding pens, Kyllae's cheeks were flushed red, her hair quite messed up, but her eyes danced with laughter even before it could escape her mouth. "That was amazing!" she proclaimed, mouth pulled far up at the corners in one of the biggest grins of her life. "Haanyath, girl, you blow me away!" She patted the stocky green on the thigh as she hurriedly undid the bindings, sliding to the ground. Her legs were a little weak, being unused to that kind of experience and she almost fell when she hit the ground, though she quickly recovered and stood back upright. Her hands went to her hair instantly, as she finger-combed it and fixed it up to look presentable again. First impressions were important, and there was no telling who she might run into or meet today.

T'ka smiled politely back at her cousin, inwardly pleased that she had been able to make her so happy, but also more reserved with her emotions. Flying on Haanyath...was quite the experience. She remembered the first time they'd flown together. She'd never forget it. She busied herself undoing the riding gear, listening to Kyllae's excited chatter behind her. Despite their obvious differences, two got along quite well.

Haanyath, as soon as she was free from the equipment set off at a steady trot, hopping the feeding pen fence with a strong jump assisted by a flap of her wings, and was soon quite busy trying to chase down a group of wherries on foot. It was quite a sight.

Kyllae sat down on the grass, folding her legs carefully under her and looking quite feminine, was a stark contrast her relative, who sat down with a 'thump' and a sigh. "How're you recovering?" T'ka started, interupting Kyllae. T'ka had been quite concerned when her cousin collapsed on the sands. She had been worried that a flight on Haanyath would be too much of an exertion. Kyllae had really just recovered; but the former dolphineer seemed quite fine.

"Really T'ka, you worry too much," Kyllae chided. "I'm tougher than I look," she laughed, punching her cousin lightly on the arm. T'ka just rolled her eyes.

Though she wasn't one hundred percent, it had been decided that Nandeli was allowed to go outside for a little fresh air. She had been made to promise that she wouldn't do anything too strenuous or too outlandish, but that was easy enough to promise. Nan wasn't keen on making herself any sicker than she already had been. It had been an unpleasant experience for both her and her dragon.

Reneneth seemed quietly pleased that her rider was back on her feet, and willingly accompanied her to sunbathe in the Bowl. The gold had settled down neatly near the edges, allowing her rider to prop herself up against her and doze. As Nandeli rested, the dragon let her eyes wander, following Haanyath as she flew two girls around the Bowl, landed, and then proceeded to pens where they kept the herdbeasts. She is catching her prey on foot, she observed quietly. Is it wise to hunt like that?

"Hmm?" Nandeli cracked one eye open to look in the direction the gold was looking. Aaah, she recognized that dragon. The rider was that smith girl... T'ka? And the dragon was Haanyath. Everybody knew her. She couldn't get a good enough look at the girl with the greenrider to tell who it was, but she looked familiar enough to be a Candidate. Nan tended to recognize Candidates the best. "You could hunt like that if you wanted to. I think it would be easier to just swoop down and get them but maybe she likes the chase. It's always possible."

The young queen raised her head a little higher and continued to watch. How peculiar...

Oblivious to the fact that she was being watched, Haanyath kept on with her chase. It wasn't easy. Being low to the ground, she had to work a lot harder to run fast. Usualy she caught the wherries by outsmarting them, or figuring out some other way of catching them; getting them to trip etc. But she wasn't having much luck now. So...she supposed she would give herself a little boost. She tensed and sprung, as if to pounce on a wherry. Only...she was too far to jump that. Well, that was where the wings came in. Unfolding like velvet parachutes, they gave her a quick burst of speed when she pumped them once or twice, so that she practically fell on top of the wherries when she landed. It wasn't a terribly composed drop. There was a shriek from one very startled wherry, a hiss from Haanyath, a whole lot of feathers thrown about; but when it cleared, all of the wherries but one were making a hasty retreat, the not-so lucky one blooded under Haanyath's feet.

Haanyath inhaled deeply, before letting out a long, loud, vicious screech. Primitive, ferocious, it wasn't a sound one associated with a dragon. But Haanyath wasn't quite the other dragons. The hunt and chase were a big deal to her. Why not proclaim her victory? She stepped back off of her kill, setting into it with enthused abandon...before she noticed something. A hatchling. Was that a gold? Haanyath raised her head a measure, turning to stare off at the young queen. Haanyath had a secret fondness for hatchlings that she'd never admit to anyone but her bonded. It wasn't like anyone needed to know, right? And though she couldn't remember exactly the magnificent performance of this particular gold at the recent hatching, Haanyath retained a vague notion that Reneneth had done something remarkable. <> she informed, though was secretly pleased that she might be interesting enough to watch.

<> Haanyath warned, before turning back to her kill. T'ka sat up, looking around. She didn't see anyone. Though she couldn't see very well from where she sat. She and Kyllae were in a slight depression in the ground, amongst other things.

<> T'ka urged. Haanyath had a habit of driving others away...though she did like hatchlings. Maybe with the right incentive she could be made to be nice for a change? <>

Haanyath was quite susceptible to flattery, and immediately decided this would be a good thing. Concious that hatchlings needs were more demanding that hers, she took only a small, soft piece from the animal's breast. She then took wing, meandering upwards, not in any great hurry. She alighted upon the ground not too far from Reneneth and Nandeli, kicking up quite a bit of dirt with backward wingstrokes. She took a few bold steps towards the smaller dragon, standing tall, chest swelling with pride. <> Haanyath asked, a little confused. It wasn't often she gave gifts.

<> Thankfully, T'ka knew that even if Haanyath made a huge mistake, dragons tended to forget things rather quicky. Poor words here would hopefully wash over with time.

<> Haanyath offered, trying to use larger words that she felt made her sound more sophisticated, or polite.

Reneneth had nothing to compare the hunting style of the green to; however, she was aware that there was something unique about it. It was much more wild than any hunting technique she had considered, but at the same time it interested her. Maybe when she was large enough she could ask the green to teach her how she hunted. Though, on second thought, she might not be able to mimic Haanyath's style exactly. The young queen was not sure she could screech like that when she caught a wherry.

She quieted her thoughts when Haanyath looked at her, waiting to see what the green would say. No doubt she would be aware that the gold hatchling was watching her. Reneneth had done nothing to hide it. Perhaps she would speak. A dragon who hunted like a wild predator would surely not be too shy to speak to another dragon, even if it was a gold. My apologies, Haanyath. I did not mean to interrupt. Reneneth dipped her head in a small gesture of apology. I was intrigued by your hunting style. But if you do not wish me to watch then I will look away for the next kills.

The green did not seem to be too distressed by her watching, however, and the gold was quietly pleased. Haanyath is coming over to visit us, Mine, she informed her rider. I have spoken to her by myself and she comes to see us.

"Very good, Ren," Nandeli replied softly, smiling even with her eyes closed. "See, you can talk to people! And dragons too." She coughed at the dirt and pulled her shirt up to cover her nose, opening one eye to look at Haanyath. Though bloody, the dragon didn't seem to be upset. This was a good sign.

Reneneth crooned softly, and turned her attention back to the older dragon. She appeared to have a small piece of meat with her, and the gold was instantly curious. Was it for her? Haanyath certainly seemed proud of herself for bringing it over. I thank you for your generosity, Haanyath. She was very pleased to accept the gift, and told Nandeli that she should cut it up for her when they returned. I am Reneneth, and Mine is Nandeli. I believe Yours is called T'ka, yes?

Haanyath was more than a little out of her element. She was quite good at being angry, moody, and demanding. Trying to impress, trying to be polite...these weren't things she was at all practiced at. What's more, she was talking not just to any old dragon, but a young queen! Haanyath had never personally interacted with a queen before...how was she supposed to act? What was expected of her?

She stood tall, but not defiantly. Despite her unease, she was confident with her posture and movement. Haanyath had never been one to falter. Still...a good impression was important, right? That was what T'ka's nestmate always said, anyway...T'ka's nestmate had also explained...why it was important to be nice to queens? Why to try and be their friends? Haanyath...couldn't quite remember the conversation. How could she be expected to? It had happened over a week ago. But...Kyllae had seemed rather sure of her words...what were they? Haanyath fumbled with the shards of memory in her mind, so that when Reneneth replied, she was almost startled. Lost in her train of thought, she had almost forgotten the little gold was actually there. <> Haanyath bristled with pride. Why, that sentence sounded mighty dandy and educated! Quite unlike the crude and almost vulgar dialect T'ka accused her of wielding.

Haanyath set the meat down on a flat-ish rock with a soft pat, and sat down leisurely. She looked over Reneneth's human...who did not look too well. So many of the humans were sick...Haanyath was unsure what to do. T'ka had told her it was out of her control. That as a dragon, she shouldn't worry about it. Not that Haanyath was prone to worrying; except that T'ka's nestmate had been sick. And that did not make Haanyath happy. At all. And while she was now slightly worried about the sickness of yet another dragon's human, she was also pleased that Reneneth knew T'ka's name. Haanyath was awfully fond of her rider. <> Haanyath admitted fondly. <> Haanyath struggled to recall just what humans were supposed to do when sick. T'ka had told her not to long ago. Ista had something special about it that related to one of the things...what was it? <> Haanyath offered.

Perhaps the Weyr was lucky that neither of the queens were high on their power. Both of the golds were on the shy side of the spectrum, and while Reneneth may have been the one who could take charge if the situation was dire she was not the type to demand deference from all dragons who met her. Nevertheless, her colour did seem to gain her a natural respect from all the dragons who met with her. It was nice to be able to talk to anyone and find them willing to talk back. Reneneth was beginning to understand why her rider enjoyed it so much.

Your technique is most unusual, though it is definitely interesting. I was not aware that dragons could catch their prey on foot. Your earlier display gives credit to your skill. Perhaps when I am older, I may wish to study how you perform such feats on the ground. It would probably be more difficult to accomplish when she was full grown, seeing as she was not a green, however she would try it. Perhaps when she was a senior weyrling she would be small enough to try what Haanyath was so good at doing. She did not wish to ruin the scenery with her practice.

The gold noticed that Haanyath's gaze had moved to Nandeli, and she touched the bond between them gently. Her rider's mind was slightly hazy but she was aware, which was a good thing. Nandeli had told her that the Healers had said she would make a full recovery, and that she should believe what the Healers had said. Reneneth was not so sure she believed the Healers, but since Hers had been so convinced she could not help but feel the same way. She has not been well, but she is getting better. I am glad. I am also glad that Yours does not look sick. Mine tells me that it is not a bad sickness… but that it is just a 'miserable' one. I do not know what that means, but I wish it would go away. She seemed to brighten at the mention of a lemon drink. Mine would like that very much, I think. You will have to thank Yours for us.

Haanyath had quite a bit of confidence, and her ego far outsized her green body. She loved praise, and being complemented by Reneneth was taken to heart. Haanyath practically radiated pleasure. And the idea of being able to teach another dragon, a gold, nonetheless, sent her over the top. She whistled a little out loud, not the most beautiful sound, for Haanyath was far from blessed with a pretty voice, but it was obviously a pleasure sound. <>
she added. Which was true. Her constant activity made an improvement in her stamina and overall flying performance, compared to some of her lazier wingmates.

<> Haanyath prodded her rider mentally. Since Kyllae had gotten over being sick quite recently, Haanyath still remembered it rather well. And she knew the sick was a bad thing. Khunoth's had been sick too. That had been bad. Haanyath did not like to see Khunoth so upset...unless she was the one bothering him. Haanyath delighted in harassing her brown brother.

T'ka, roused a little by her dragon's sudden mental intrustion, sat up a little, trying to see Haanyath from where she rested. <>

Haanyath didn't see why that was a terribly relevant question, but for her riders sake she would ask. <> While T'ka hadn't said that exactly...Haanyath knew hers well enough to know that was what she meant. Haanyath mused a little that it must be nice, to be able to have your own room, if you wanted. Yet...she liked sharing a room with her green sister. While she and Astarteth bickered constantly, it was all good natured. Haanyath liked having someone to compete with.

Now that was an interesting sound. Reneneth's eyes whirled, and for a moment she considered trying to mimic it. She was reminded, however, of her recovering rider, and decided that it was probably not the best idea. Replicating such a sound would certainly hurt Nandeli's human ears, which would not be a very pleasant experience for them. Still, the gold hatchling could not help but appreciate the sound for what it was. Certainly this Haanyath was a magnificent green. She would do well when Thread fell. I would be very happy to learn from you. You will be a good teacher I am sure.

At the question about their quarters she was quiet for a moment as she tried to figure out how to describe them to her newest green friend. We do not share a weyr with anyone. Mine says that Queen dragons and their riders require space, so we are given our own room. It will be easy to find. Mine has pegged a pair of foot warmers with little dragon cousins to the wall just outside it. Reneneth did not understand the meaning of the socks in front of her room, but Nandeli knew best. Whether or not there were socks outside their separate room in the barracks was none of her concern.

You have your own weyr now, yes? Up with the rest of the dragons? She tilted her head upward as though to point to the weyr accessible by dragons who could fly. Do you share it with another?

Haanyath was sure that T'ka would be proud of her for being so well behaved. It was often a point of contention between the green and her rider that Haanyath was so abrasive. Haanyath always maintained that she could be nice. She just ususally didn't feel like it. The fact that she seemed to be getting along with Reneneth was definately in her favor though. She looked forward to seeing her human's face when she recalled the conversation later. Maybe T'ka would oil her. That would be nice. Haanyath didn't like baths much, but oiling was quite pleasant.

Alone...the idea of being alone in a Weyr was foreign to Haanyath. She'd had to share a room her whole life. At least now that she was a full grown dragon, she was only rooming with one other. Some of the other riders had up to three or four per room. T'ka had explained that they only had to have roommate, because Haanyath was usually so nasty, that no one wanted to be her roommate. And that was fine, Haanyath didn't want a roommate! Well, Astarteth was okay. Haanyath would give her sister that much credit. Astar was always going on about why it was so great to be a green, and why she was better than a gold. Haanyath was quite amused when she imagined telling Astar later about her little conversation with Reneneth.

<> Haanyath was quite adamant that the room really belonged to her, and that she was just nice enough to share it. In cases like that, T'ka knew it was better to let the topic go than to try and argue it.

<>

<> T'ka felt a little flicker of annoyance through her bond with Haanyath. Haanyath hated the word 'behave' with a passion. She'd probably heard it more than a thousand times by now; though it still seemed to do just as little as it did the first time.

<>

Down below, where T'ka sat she chuckled a little, earning a skeptical glance from Kyllae. Haanyath sure liked to be complimented. That probably explained why things were going so well. <>

<>

Haanyath turned the whole of her attention back to Reneneth after that brief spurt of discussion with Her's. <> Because Reneneth was a good dragon, Reneneth's must be good too. And if Reneneth's was hanging footwarmers on the wall...then T'ka should too! Because there was obviously something important or good abot it. Only Haanyath didn't want T'ka's footwarmers to have flits on them. Haanyath didn't like flits.

<> Haanyath didn't get lonely, she was quite independant. But she did get bored. And having Astar as a roommate meant she always had someone to bother! T'ka was not good for bothering. T'ka did not snap back the way Astar did.

PostPosted: Sun Jun 14, 2009 7:34 pm

You are very nice to share your room with another. Your sister Astarteth is a green, yes? Nandeli had encouraged her to get to know the dragons around the Weyr as best she could. Most of them would like to talk, her rider had said, especially about things they liked. Get them talking about their favourite hobbies and you'll learn more about them than ever! No doubt a dragon like Haanyath would only allow another to stay with her if she liked her. Perhaps she could learn a thing or two about some of the older greens through her. It was an interesting hypothesis.

At the mention of the foot warmers, Reneneth simply conveyed her confusion and quiet acceptance of the matter. I am coming to understand that humans have many strange customs that we will never see purpose in. However, Mine often says that as long as it does not bring harm to others then no one can find fault in it. I guess that applies to the articles of human clothing that can be pegged to the wall. It really was a mystery, but the young gold had not the time to ponder it now. Perhaps she would ask her rider about it later and see if she got a different answer.

She tilted her head when Haanyath asked her about feeling alone. Her first answer was that they were never alone, but she had a feeling that was not the question the green was asking her. So, after a moment of quiet deliberation, she replied, Mine has many friends and many of her friends have dragons, so there is lots of opportunity for us to speak with others and enjoy their company. I do not mind that when we return to our room there is no one there but us. Sometimes quiet is nice. Does yours know a rider named O'asis? He has a bronze, Uktenath, my clutchmate. Mine likes to talk to him often. Him and Galliath's.

<> she tacked that on to the end, realizing that her statement might be a little condescending to the metallic female. Though Haanyath didn't realize it, she was also engaging for possibly the first time in one of the most well known and practiced Green hobbies. Gossip. Having just tested the waters however, she was a little unsure, and witheld any more information on her sibling, or any other dragon for that matter. Not that she wouldn't give way without a little prompting.

<> It was true, Haanyath could be very nosy if she felt her rider was doing something degrading or strange. T'ka was patient, thankfully, and tried her best to explain her actions to Haanyath, who usually forgot them relatively quickly anyway; but hey, it was the thought that counted, right? And trying to keep Haanyath appeased was critical as well. Haanyath had a way of not only being grumpy, but of inflicting her mood ailment on others as well. T'ka tried very hard to keep that from happening. Haanyath mood disorder, or HPD, seemed to spread faster than the plague.

Haanyath did not know any of the people Reneneth mentioned personally. But...some of those names...sounded familiar? She searched her memory banks, and drew up something more than a blank. Oh yes!<> Possibly the only person Haanyath could remember by name other than T'ka. <> Haanyath looked thoughtful for a moment, quite an amusing expressionon a dragon whose features seemed almost permanently arranged into a hiss or snarl. <> she admitted; once again trying out the feel of gossip on her tongue. She liked it quite a bit. It was fun to talk about her people! And Reneneth was pleasant audience to boot.

PostPosted: Wed Jun 17, 2009 10:16 am

Brags like a gold? Reneneth was quietly amused at that, though she kept those feelings to herself. A gold did not need to brag about anything. She was always the biggest, most beautiful dragon in the whole Weyr. Everyone looked up to her and obeyed her. Ren had been paying very close attention to Nandeli's stories about queenriders, and she did not have any reason to disagree with her rider about the whole thing. Still, this Astarteth sounded amusing. Was she a green who wished to be a queen?

None taken. I would like to meet Astarteth one day myself. She perked up a little when Haanyath started talking about O'asis, remembering the rider from the Hatching Feast. She remembered his dragon, too. A very nice young bronze. They would do very well together. Mine enjoys his company a lot. She says they were good friends before they Impressed. I am glad that he Impressed Uktenath so that they could stay at the Weyr with us.

Nandeli, who had been dozing up until that point, opened her eyes sharply at the last bit. It seemed that there was gossip about even when she was trying to sleep. How was she ever going to catch up once she recovered? She was lucky she had Ren about to pick up the little bits for her. "Wait what? Repeat back what she said again."

Reneneth blinked at the request; however she dutifully reported what Haanyath had said about Kyllae and O'asis. She didn't understand why Nan was so interested in the affairs of Uktenath's, but perhaps it was just one of those human things. One day she would get Hers to explain fully about why she thought Uktenath's and Galliath's would look good together.

The queenrider hummed thoughtfully, pausing to cough into her elbow, before she said. "Ask Haanyath if she knows anything about Kyllae and O'asis. Do they hang out at all? Or like... spend a lot of time together?" Reneneth repeated the questions to Haanyath, not entirely sure what her rider was up to.

Haanyath hadn't met Uktenath, but if Kyllae was spending time around this young dragon...Haanyath wanted to meet him. Make sure he was okay, and all that other protective stuff. She didn't want Kyllae hanging out around some unworthy dragon.

Haanyath wasn't sure what Nandeli was up to either. But Reneneth seemed innocent and sweet, so Haanyath would humor her. Why Kyllae and O'asis were so interesting was beyond Haanyath, but she would dutifully relay all she knew. And, conveniantly, Hers happened to be sitting right next to the girl in question. <>

<way too much time with him, in my opinion.>>

<> Haanyath asked. Down below, T'ka's brow furrowed. What on Pern kind of question was that? Particularly from a dragon. She came close, very close, to asking Haanyath why she wanted to know. And then Haanyath would have responded that Reneneth wanted to know. And T'ka would have said nothing, and not asked Kyllae the question. She knew Reneneth's rider had a reputation for spreading rumors. However, T'ka almost asked Haanyath the question. Which is as good as saying she didn't.

"Hey Kyllae, how much time do you spend with O'asis, would you say?" T'ka prodded, sitting up a little to stare at her cousin. Kyllae blinked once or twice, having been thrown off her chatter rail, but was never one to be out of it for long.

"O'asis? Oh, O'asis is great. I wouldn't say that I spend a lot of time with him; but he's such a nice guy, I do like to socialize with him when I have a chance. I gave him that flit egg, you know. The extra one I didn't know what to do with." Kyllae admitted, smiling. It did strike her as odd that her cousin asked that question out of the blue, but she didn't think much of it. T'ka was prone to asking questions like that from time to time.

T'ka related what Kyllae'd said back to Haanyath. Albeit not totally objectively, of course. And in turn Haanyath told Reneneth. <> that last bit was obvious sarcasm on T'ka's part, but Haanyath told it to Reneneth in all seriousness. <> Haanyath was a little annoyed at that. To Haanyath, the real plague around the Weyr was the ridiculous number of flits running around. Haanyath didn't like flits.

PostPosted: Thu Jun 18, 2009 8:40 pm

Indeed, Reneneth was – at the current moment – quite innocent and sweet. Her rider, on the other hand, was not, and was eagerly awaiting a response from T'ka. Hopefully the girl wouldn't ask why the little gold wanted to know so much about Kyllae and O'asis. She had an inkling that T'ka wouldn't tell her anything if she knew who was asking. There was something about that girl that just screamed "I don't talk to gossipers" and people like that always made Nandeli sad. They were sucking away all of her fun!

It seemed that her luck was looking up, as Reneneth relayed the message to her. Score! The Nose would have jumped for joy had she not still been feeling the effects of her illness. Instead, she settled for doing a happy mental dance. It had been days since she'd heard a hint of scandalous news – the Healers seemed bent on leaving her alone to heal – and Nan was starting to believe that she was missing out on everything. That, or there really was nothing going on, which would have been the end of her world entirely. But her faith was restored in the Weyrfolk, which would make the healing process much easier.

"Thank you very much Ren, and Haanyath. You have been most helpful." She flashed the green dragon a bright grin as she propped herself up against her gold.

Reneneth seemed quite pleased with herself at the response she got from Nandeli, eyes whirling as she arched her neck. She had done well! Though she wasn't entirely sure why Nan was so happy, she decided she liked it just the same. I do not know the significance of giving little cousins around, but I find them most endearing. A little one touched my nose at my Hatching Feast.

Nandeli idly stroked one of the ridges on the gold's neck, reaching up to cover a yawn with her free hand. Perhaps she had best return to the Healers before they sent out a search party for her. The last thing the Weyr needed was for the newly Impressed queen to go between because her rider became seriously ill, or so the Healers told her every day. It was not a nice thought by any stretch of the imagination, and so Nandeli had tried to humour them. With a small sigh she hauled herself to her feet, Reneneth rising with her. "We should probably be going back now. Say your goodbyes and we'll be on our way."

The young queen turned her attention back to Haanyath. Thank you for your lessons and your attention, green Haanyath. I shall not forget you. She dipped her head to pick up the gift the green had given her, before turning and following Nandeli back up to the Healers.

The Nose was back in business baby.

Haanyath stood, giving Reneneth a little nod as she walked off. <> Haanyath was very, very proud of how well she'd done. Taking a leap off the cliff, she swooped back down into the feeding pen, scattering the wherries once again as she resumed where she'd left off with her kill. It was quite tasty.

<> T'ka questioned, curious and pleasantly suprised.

<> Haanyath stated, finishing up her food and chasing after another Wherry. It took many to fill her stomach. <>

T'ka just sighed and closed her eyes, laying down on the grass. The day was beautiful, Haanyath was happy, Kyllae wasn't sick anymore...T'ka was quite happy. If only she knew what she had just done. Who she'd given that information to. Oh well. Ignorance was bliss.
