The Myths circling Norse mythology have always been an interest of mine. It seems that lately concepts have been showing up in games and movies more frequently. Games like Valkyrie Profile, Max Payne and Odin sphere have been growing in popularity.
I am curious what do you know of Valkyries in particular?

I don't know much myself but my best friend is a heathen. She knows a lot about the Norse mythology. I will ask her and get back to you with some information.

Actually, Heathen is the appropriate term when referring to pagans that follow certain paths. Norse being one of those. I call her a heathen because she calls herself one.

I read a book and it said that the first Valkyrie was about a woman, a warrior that had a arrow pierced though her armor so much that her own hart beat was killing her. On her knees she screamed. Her screms woke two nearby gods and they took her up and gave up lighting for her courage. and her kid will be the frist Valkrie.

Valkyries are, quite simply, the choosers of the slain. They bring the chosen, those who died bravely in battle, to Valhalla (conversely, those who died of old age or illness descended into Hel) to join Odin's army, the einherjar. There, the valkyries bear them mead (that is, when they are not preparing for Ragnarök). Some valkyries, such as Brynhildr, also appear as lovers of heroes and other mortals (there, they are often described as daughters of royalty).
Valkyries are often accompanied by ravens and sometimes associated with swans.

I do believe that Freya gets first pick before the warriors go to Odin's Hall. I think I am remembering correctly from what Kayna told me. I am sure that there is more to that myth, I just don't remember it.

Autumn Fyhr I do believe that Freya gets first pick before the warriors go to Odin's Hall. I think I am remembering correctly from what Kayna told me. I am sure that there is more to that myth, I just don't remember it. Indeed. Freyja is said to receive half of the dead lost in battle in her hall Fólkvangr, whereas Odin receives the other half at Valhalla.
