English haiku is 5 - 7 - 5 syllables, not characters, though I don't know about the original form in Japanese. It traditionally has a surprise in the last line and is nature themed.

No, I know. ^__^ In Japanese one 'syllable' is the equivalent of a hiragana or katakana character. And as I'm not a good poet, I didn't worry to much how it was supposed to be. real japanese haiku's are much better than any attempted english one. :
