Mirage watched in her mirror as Angelus confronted Buffy once more. The eyes of Evil void of emotion as she watched them fight one another. And when the slayer finally fell, eyes glazing in death, a wave went through the Oasis. Evil was winning, it was growing. The balance was shattered and...

Mirage arched her back as a scream tore from her. The numbness she had been feeling in the past weeks was gone, replaced by an unimaginably painful thrum, beginning within her mind and spreading like boiling water through her entire body. It blocked out any and all sounds, shaking and crushing her mind ever so slowly with every beat of her heart, as if some other being were reaching into her very mind and squeezing it tightly, intent on breaking it and causing her as much pain as possible as it did so.

She reared back on her hind paws as it filled her head, her forepaws pressing to it as she screamed out her pain, falling backwards to jerk on her back as it tore through her, blood leaking slowly from her ears as it reverberated throughout her body.

She felt the evil in the world like a hum in her mind. She'd forgotten about that when she lost what had been left of her mortality, thought she had gone numb against any pain the world might throw at her. Oh, how wrong she'd been.

The Cheshire Cat clung to itself as the feeling of Buffy Summer's death reverberate through the creature's being. It would start a chain reaction of madness, anger, and hatred and the Cat felt it deep within its immortal bones.
And then when Chesh thought it was finally over, a shrill scream of pain sliced through the cat's mind. Instinctively, Chesh's head bowed and small paws covered delicate ears, gasping as it fell back in pain.
"Oh gods, what have we done?" Cheshire gasped before the world went blank as the cat fell into unconsciousness.

Mirage had screamed herself mute, and still the pain didn't leave her. In fact, it had seemed to grow. How had she been so foolish? How could she have forgotten the one thing that Fate had bestowed upon Evil to help keep it in check?
The proud cat lay curled up in a fetal position, eyes wide and contracted in pain as rivers of tears fled them. They stung from lack of blinking, but it was nothing compared to the pain shooting through what was left of her mind, body, and soul.

She needed to get up. She needed to find someone to manipulate into defeating Angelus enough to restore the balance she'd destroyed. She needed to think of a way to fix what she had done before it killed her and ultimately destroyed existence. The world existed so long as there was balance, Evil and Good, Chaos and Fate. Should one of those four cease to exist, the balance would be destroyed and with it the world.
But she couldn't.
What was done was done and the balance was so far gone that she couldn't move, couldn't even think.
All she could do was twitch there, hoarse gasps and sobs all that could escape her lips beside the occasional cough, blood from her ears and icy tears staining her fur carpets.
And all she could think of was Fashir and that damned cat.
She didn't want to be alone when she died.

Fashir gasped and staggered within his den as he felt a strange ripping sensation in the pit of his stomach. Something had happened...something unimaginable. His paws failed under him as he felt a great weight against his shoulders, a vision far more intense then any he had ever had sweeping over him.

"What have I done..." He gasped out, yet he knew that the blame was shared.
Mirage

The thought of his onetime lover made him thrust to his paws and race for her through time and space. He moved to her quickly so quickly that one would doubt the older wolf was blind at all. He moved with certainty as he pulled the dark feline into his embrace.

"My mirage...breath deep...you will survive this." His head snapped up as he felt the call of the next slayer and tried to stop it, not her! He felt the energy pull away from his grasp to settle elsewhere. He held back an angry growl how could they ever repair this? Where had they all gone so wrong? Had it been their tampering that created this catastrophe or was the oasis fated to suffer such a thing long before they arrived?

Suddenly there were strong paws around her, paws she knew, holding her close. And as Mirage felt the call of the slayer move to another, the pain eased a bit, enough for her to breathe properly again, though she still trembled.
"It h-hurts... So... So much. I fo-forgot... H-how could... How could I f-f-forget?" she whispered softly, unable to say much more than that. Part of her wanted to just let go and be done with it. At least Fashir was there for her in her final moments. She was tired of being at war with him, tired of this stupid "game" that was life. For the first time in her long existence, she wanted to give up. She didn't want this responsibility anymore, didn't want to have to worry about the balance of the universe. She honestly just wanted to curl up, go to sleep, and never wake up again.

"It's all my fault my love...please...forgive me? Together we can fix this...and make things as they should be. It will be hard, but I need you Mirage...I have always needed you." He nuzzled her tenderly his own body aching from the rift in the balance.

He moved to lay her down against the furs within her realm and slowly wiped the blood and tears away. His paws moved over her with soft soothing energy, the cost was painful and his own nose began to trickle blood.

"Stay awake Mirage, you must stay awake..."

Mirage's green eyes finally lifted up to his face and she reached a trembling paw up to wipe the blood from his nose.
"I'm so tired... Fashir... I can't... do this. Not anymore..." She pressed her face into his fur, her shivering slowly ceasing and she struggled to keep her eyes open anymore. As the pain receded, the weakness of her state began to overtake her. Her body, her mind, and her soul, all were exhausted from her retribution. She closed her eyes for a moment and willed knowledge into the golden heart of one of Angelus' children. It was the only thing she could truly bestow on another. The humming lessened even more and she knew she had helped if just a little. The winged one would never follow his father, for he would know who it was that killed his mother. It would create a void between him and the Nightroad child, but that Angelus lost a pawn was enough for her.
"I... I never stopped, loving you," she whispered into his fur, fighting to open her eyes again. They did, but only a little.

"I know you are Mirage, but you won't be doing this alone...please...I've been such a fool..." He nuzzled her tenderly.

"I never really hated you, I was so angry that I let myself become your enemy." He frowned and held her close his chest no longer as tight realizing what she had done. He longed to do something, and yet he knew better then to try just yet, he would need to wait until the Slayer was older.

He gazed down into Mirage's eyes and relaxed slowly his own pain fading as he was flooded with the old familiar warmth, love. "stay awake my love..."

The tired cat gave a weak, half-hearted laugh.
"Always... telling me what... to do, Fashir," she whispered as she sighed softly.
"I wanted... to be as good as you. You always bested me, I... didn't care. Was happy, to see you win, even though it frustrated me... When you said you never understood me... I broke. All that was left was my job... I thought I could do it without second thoughts..." She trailed off there and buried her face into his fur again.
"Don't do it again... Please... I couldn't... I wouldn't be able to..." she couldn't manage to finish the plea. Instead she simply shook her head weakly.

He chuckled and nuzzled her neck. "You've always known better Mirage...even before you took these duties. I won't be foolish enough to hurt you like that again...please forgive me?" He lightly licked her cheek and curled up around her pulling her close against him and covering her carefully with his cloak.

"Rest and you'll be well soon enough..."

A tenseness left Mirage and she relaxed against him.
"I always will," she replied and smiled a bit, glancing up at him.
"We'll fix this, I... can feel it," she added before curling up beside him, closing her eyes to sleep. She could feel it deep down. There were many fierce heroes untapped in the Oasis, and others just a gentle push away. It wasn't in her ability to tap them, but Fashir could. The balance was still tipped, and there were still many that balanced the line between, but... They would make this right, her and Fashir. Good and Evil, yin and yang.

Fashir smiled softly and nodded against her neck as he held her close. This was how they were meant to be, together no matter their differences.
"All will be well...I have you now..." he tenderly nuzzled her and closed his eyes letting his energy go to healing her.
