My basal cells seem trivial compared to some, but I have to have at least 2 a year removed. I have had full basal cell carcinoma on one of them and various stages of 'pre cancerous' on the others. I NEVER burned as a youngster, but I also never used sunscreen. I do now - don't leave my house without it. So now that the weather is warming up (it frosted here in Michigan last night!!!) put on that sunscreen and wear those hats - my doctor got on me about that one. I was missing Diana hugely the other day after a conversation in the horse forum we were on together. I know she is giggling at the 19 year olds who know everything there is to know about everything!

I HATE hats, but after the very large tumor they removed from my scalp, after it being misdiagnosed as a cyst for almost 8 years, I have 3. If I'm going anything more than walking across the street or around the corner, I wear one. I'm pasty white (so white I'm pink), and that's ok with me. Sunscreen gets put on the uncovered areas, but I stay covered with clothes. I burn through sunscreen. Still, I wear it, and am incredibly conscious of how long I'm in the sun.
I really wish I'd done that before I got cancer, so the cancer wouldn't have ever even happened. I'm happy my children seem to have learned from my mistakes, and my father's. He has 3 or 4 a year removed, and he's hardly ever in the sun any longer.

I don't wear sunscreen. I don't wear hats. I look horrible in hats. I like to keep my hair up, and I can never get the hat to fit over my ponytail. I could probably wear a scarf on my head, but then I would look really silly on a hot day....And those are all pretty bad reasons I admit! xp
I'm not terribly fair, and I can tan quite well without burning if I'm in the sun. I haven't been in the sun for any length of time since I was a small child though. I don't go out much, just for walks. And when I do go out I usually cover pretty much everything. I'm the type of person who's always chilly anyway, and I don't shave. So I usually wear long light pants on hot days rather than shorts.

I look horrible in hats too, but I wear one now. Even thought it's "just" basal cell, it's still cancer, and the UV damage is accumulative. I haven't spent much time outside, or gotten burned often, since I was a teenager. But, I accumulated enough, that the tumor formed. My father is rarely outside, and has been like that for about 15 years, but he has had 12 tumors removed from when we all spent many weekends on the lake. So, just because you aren't getting much sun now, don't discount it completely. You're probably less likely to get it, due to having darker skin (as apposed to those of us who are so white we're pink), but the chances never go away completely. Please be careful!

Here's an interesting article about how some sunscreens may contain chemicals that are bad for you, what the best alternatives are, natural ways to protect yourself, etc.

Thank you. I avoid outside due to being allergic to most sunscreens on the market right now. Gonna check into me being able to do the sunblocks instead.

I learned my lesson with this once this summer already. Hats hats hats! My scalp is currently peeling at a disgusting rate.
Sunscreen is super mega important! I try to use a different one on my face then the rest of my body though. 3nodding I also try to stay out of the sun during the peak hours of the day.

Even thought summer is officially over, and it's cooling off in SOME places (not where I am), sunscreen is still important. Overcast days are the worst for sunburns, as the burning rays are the only ones who make it through the clouds. Sunscreen is a necessity year round. Please keep it in mind when out and about this fall.
