Beginner Classes 容易课 Mandarin NPCR text
___________________________________________

This is where the beginner lessons will be! So if you are just begining mandarin chinese then this is where you should be!

The following lessons do come from a legitamate chinese language book known as the New Practical Chinese Reader (NPCR). Though the book is at college level i will try to make it easier to understand.
I will be working on sounds because getting the sounds right for the chinese language, especially mandarin is very important for communication!

And do remember that chinese is a difficult language to learn so don't become discouraged at the begining, because this is the hardest part, as you continue throughout learning the language you will begin to understand it and comprehend it better just like any other language!

remember: NO POSTING!!

Preface!前言qián yán
__________________________

Welcome to the Beginner's Chinese class! 你 欢迎 容易中文课! nǐ huān yíng róng yì zhōng guó kè!

Now what is typed below comes from the actual text book so bear with me. (this you don't have to read but hey it's interesting... sort of :b)

New Practical Chinese Reader is a series of Chinese Textbooks compiled at the begining of the new millenium for the purpose of teaching chinese to native English speakers or those who use English as their principal second language. It aims to develop the learner's communicative ability in Chinese by learning language structures, functions and related cultural knowledge as well as by training their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The series consists of seventy lessons in six volumes (this sticky includes the whole first volume 14chapters... or at least will it's alot of typing) The first four volumes, consisting of fifty lessons, are for beginners and pre-intermediate... okay so that's an excerpt the rest is about the more advanced volumes which is not what we are on right now.

So the set up of these lessons are as follows:
there are two sets of new words and texts for each set followed by a list of random words that the book decided to include which are also important to learn. The translation to the texts will be located at the bottom of the post though you shouldn't need it. Then after the translation i will put excercises and/or quizzes so you can test your knowledge!

Also examples of word frases will be in this color proceeding the word's definition

Now to make things clear:
pinyin is the romanized way of writing chinese, it's how english speakers learn the sounds. Chinese people know the pinyin because they were taught it in school as first graders and use it to type chinese on a computer but besides that they never use it.
ex: nǐ hǎo that is the pinyin for 你好 which means hello

Also if you notice the different tones above the vowels in the words ni and hao, pay close attention to those! They are very important when speaking mandarin!

there are four tones

1st tone: looks like "-" ex: yōu means excellent; superior
2nd tone: looks like "/" ex: yóu means wart
3rd tone: looks like "v" ex: yǒu means to have
4th tone: looks like "ex: yòu means entice; tempt
no tone: has no tone ex: you means friend, but "you" must add "péng" before it to mean something friend; péng you 朋友.

These aren't the only meanings to "you" there are many others! The key is that they usually don't go by themselves. ex: wǒ hěn yōu yuè (i am very superior) instead of saying wǒ hěn yōu, you add "yuè" because that means more and when you put yōu and yuè together it means superior (confusing, i know, it's hard to explain through typed words).

Also how to say tones:
tones are only used on vowels!

go to this site to hear what the different tones sound like and you can see the pronounciation table which enables you to hear all of the chinese sounds!!
Also in the table at the bottom the empty boxes means that there is no such sound used in the mandarin language

[THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW, BEFORE YOU PROCEED YOU SHOULD HAVE A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF HOW TO SPEAK OR KEEP THIS WINDOW UP AS YOU ARE LEARNING SO THAT YOU CAN HEAR HOW IT SOUNDS]
http://www.newconceptmandarin.com/support/Intro_Pinyin.asp

ALSO!!! by the 3rd lesson i am going to stop putting the tones over the pinyin because it's takes to long to type so i will type with the tone number after the word ex: ni3 hao3 = nǐ hǎo

Now that you have read everything in the preface (except perhaps the excerpt from the actual book) you are fully prepared to embark on your first lesson of chinese!!!!

But First!

Meet the Characters that will often be seen in the text:

Dīng Lì bō 丁 力 波: A canadian student, age 21, male.
Mǎ Dáwéi 马达 维 An american student, age 22, male.
Lín Nà 林 娜 A british student, age 19, female.
