...I mean, really!

"Book of Shadows" has a very ominous feel to it. razz

Something witchy this way comes......hehehe

Well, I googled it, looked at a few web references, and [insert drumroll]
quite simply, Gerald Gardner made it up. The "Book of Shadows" is the coven reference book in any of the lines of British Traditional Wicca. The title has since devolved to mean an individual witches' spellbook or working journal.

Honestly, the coolest one I have seen in a movie is in "Practical Magic", which stars Sandra Bullock (and bear in mind that the Alice Hoffmann novel is very, very different and equally good). In the film, the older sisters' spellbook is full of pasted-in stuff and how the work is recorded has meaning, also.

Huh. I wonder why he chose to give it such an ominous-sounding title...

Dunno; I'm not really sure that I consider myself a 'pagan' per se; I just have a lot of questions about Pagan/Wiccan beliefs on what makes the world tick. mrgreen

I can speculate on why Gerald Gardner set things up the way he did but I would get in trouble.... Just saying that he 'made things up' will upset some people....even though that's what he did, at least to some degree (and now I'm making bad 'inside' puns).

I am perfectly happy to answer questions, to the best of my ability. Just be warned you get my opinion which is distinctly irreverent, biased against tradition and organization, and subject to change as I learn more....

And, of course, you're welcome to stay no matter what label you eventually decide fits you.

i was told once that its called the book of shadows because you had to keep it in the shadows away from people who would either steal the spells and things in it for their own use, good or bad, or from people who would use it to persecute you as an evil devil-worshipper and such. ^^

That sounds like a reasonable explanation to me. I'll admit that I had never heard the reasoning for calling the coven book or the witches' working journal a "Book of Shadows" before. I hadn't thought to ask until Yanueh brought it up.

I was reading in Cunningham's Wicca book and came across something called a Mirror Book. He describes this as:

"This is a magical record of your progress in Wicca. In it, record all thoughts and feelings about Wicca, the results of your readins, magical successes and failures, doubts and fears, significant dreams - even mundane concerns."

This is differentiated from the Book of Shadows, which contains "invocations, ritual patterns, spells, runes, rules governing magic..."
So, one is the recipes and directions, the other is the results and impressions.

I believe that it is called that because pagans hold their beliefs secret and this book is somewhat like a diary of sorts and is not to be shared with anyone.

I myself have a Book of Shadows (home-made and personalized with my totem/power animal), but wondered why it's called that. Thanks for the answers and opinions. :3

I'd say because (in solitary terms) that it's your collected information, for you. No one else. Therefore, it's secretive [in the shadows, unknown to everyone but you.]
