Oh no imderanged, that sucks sad did they at least tell you why it didn't work or did they just brush over it?

Oh they explained as best the could why it didn't work. my problem is kinda complex. (Every time I go, I find out it's a little weirder than I even first though) basically I had awful pancreatitis that did damage to the organ...well, there is a duct that runs through the pancreas and that got scared. the scar tissue was making the duct constrict so that one area was much smaller then it should be, and since nothing could get through(pancratic enzymes flow through there) the part behind the stricture what building up pressure and fluid and getting bigger....

Anyways, that's why the psuedocyst had come back, fluid that couldn't get past the constriction of my duct was filling it. So, the doctor drained the cyst and placed a stent in the duct to allow the enzymes to flow more normally. he also put me on an enzyme to help w/ and loss of pancreatic function...

Thing is, pancreatic stents are not like heart stents or what ever, and you can't leave them in indefinitely. What the doctor was trying to accomplish was to strech the duct out enough that it would stay open. he was putting progressively larger stents in. But, it didn't work. One time the stent came back out. The last time it was half out again. the scar tissue was constricting around it and pushing it out. As soon as the stent came out the duct was closed again, so the stretching was not working. So, he sent me to the surgeon.

AND SO THAT GETS US CAUGHT UP A LITTLE. TODAY I SAW THE SURGEON. Yeah. Well, he seemed OK, but the office staff leaves a lot to be desired. I wasn't told I needed to get the physical disc of my last MRI, I only had the reports faxed over. Sooo...he couldn't tell me anything definitive. But, he says, there are a few things we could do. They include the possibility of TAKING OUT 95% of my pancreas...and a PANCREAS TRANSPLANT!!! OMG, I couldn't stop laughing in his office. I don't know why I thought it was so funny, I just guess I deal with stressful stuff by giggling! So, yeah, he said, with the kind of problem I have I should probably "talk to the transplant people" now, cause I guess I gotta get on a list or something, and it seems like even if it turns out that I don't need one now, he thinks I'll need one someday.

So, I guess you could say I'm pretty freaked out.

...well I saw the surgeon AGAIN. I'm not a candidate for transplant...my diabetes isn't bad enough... so I guess that's a good thing. Actually, the surgeon doesn't want to do any surgery on me right now?!? he still thinks I'll need surgery (where they cut open the length of the duct, or "filet my pancreas like a fish" as he put it...and sew part of my intestine to it so it can drain...) But he wants to wait until my condition gets worse. I know it sounds kind of strange, but they way he explained it it made a little more sense....apparently the surgery is actually easier if the duct is even more dilated...so for now I get a reprieve, I see him again in 2 months. I'm HAPPY not to have to have surgery right away, but part of me is just frustrated to STILL have all this hanging over my head!

That's good you're still not "sick enough" for immediate surgery. It's too bad that you still have this over your head though, because it may be a couple months still.

Thank You. I was just so surprised at first, because the way the doc were talking at first I was sure they were going to do some kind of major surgery. But I'm glad I don't have to do it yet. Maybe I'll even be able to go back to school in the fall...

That would be so great if you'd be able to go back to school in the fall. biggrin

Wow! just found this old thread and realized a lot has happened since my last post!!! November of last year I fell down in my own front yard and broke my foot so badly I needed pins and a titanium plate to hold it together. I lost my job because I couldn't "perform my duties". My pancreatic issues eventually got worse & I ended up needing the surgery after all. I went to a different hospital and saw another specialist. They did a procedure called a Pustow procedure. The basically cut open the duct lengthwise, and then attached a part of my intestine over it so the my pancreatic enzymes could drain into my intestine the way they were supposed to. So, yeah, pretty major surgery. But it went well, and I do feel much better. I can eat a lot of thing I couldn't before, so that makes me really happy. the doctors think they stopped my Diabetes from getting worse, but they estimate my pancreas functions at about 50% So, now I am on insulin. Overall things are looking up since last year. For now i am able to collect unemployment. Hopefully I'll find a job within my physical capabilities soon, and I should be back in school this spring smile
