What's the deal with Thor? I heard this one time he dressed up like Freyja and him and Loki tricked the giants into thinking Thor was Freyja... I mean how does that work out? How can you confuse some big tough guy with a hot chick? Also where did Loki's awesome powers originate from if he is not truly one of the Aesir. gonk

The Norse Gods tend to have various transformation magics so I like to think the disguise was helped along by some of that. And as to Loki's powers, that's a dificult one to answer. In some stories, he is an Aesir completely. Some stories say he came from Giant stock. The Aesir also weren't the only Gods in the Norse world. Most record of the others has been lost with time accept for the Vanic deities Njord and his children Frey, and Frejya, who live among the Aesir. Whatever his origins, Loki is certainly Odin's blood brother and there's a certain amount of power there.

Also, you have to remember that in most of the legends, the giants weren't the smartest creatures around.

Like which ones for example?
In Norse mythology, the giants (or Jotuns) were the primary antagonists. They wouldn't be much of a problem if they were dumb as stones. They were powerful and in many cases, highly intelligent. Some were a little dim but the same can be said for the Gods. Thor certainly wasn't the brghtest crayon in the box. And for an example of a powerful and intelligent giant just look at Skrymir, the lord of Utgard. With his magic and his knowledge, he tricked Thor and Loki and got away with it. In some cases, giants were highly regarded enough to join the gods, though they were generally females like Gerd and Skadi.

Sorry, you just hit a sore spot. Many people seem to think this and I don't know where they came on the idea. And my favorte Norse deity is the giant maid Skadi.

That was one of my favorite stories about the Norse pantheon. It made me show some major respect for Thor and Loki.

Namikikyo, are you talking about the story in the original post or the one about Utgard?

Actually, All of the mythology regarding the Norse pantheon, except for poor Sol and Mani, are my favorites. But, I think I was talking about the story of Thor cross dressing for the sake of his hammer.

Ah. Of course, the fact that Loki gave mjollnir to the giant in the first place makes for an interesting dynamic.

And slight nitpick. There is no Sol in the Norse pantheon. The Nosre goddess of the sun is Sunna. Is that what you mean. What are you refering to about those two that you don't care for?

Yes, it did. :3

And that's alright, I'm fine with being corrected. But, What about her daughter? From the stories I've heard, Sol is the sun that is chased by the wolf, But Sunna is her daughter. {though, I will admit Sol is somtimes called Sunna} When Ragnorak happens, Sunna is supposed to succeed Sol and become the new sun.

Well, I don't care for the fact that the Sun and Moon is always chased by wolves. It's a beautiful story that I wouldn't change for the world, But I can just imagine always running and knowing that you're going to be killed by a beast. The story of how that Gods asked the Sun one day if the tale was true and she started to cry.. broke my heart. It's tragic.. and I guess I don't like to think of that fear they have, You know?

Yes, I always found the devouring by wolves bit rather sad too but then, mot of the Norse Gods have fates just as sad or greusom (aside from the younger ones who will take over after the Ragnorok). As to Sunna as Sol's daughter. I don't believe so. Sunna is the sun in the sky right now, not the one that will be after Ragnorok. I've never heard of Sol as a Norse diety at all. I must research this matter more thouroly.

I know, I know.. I just have a soft spot for feminine solar deities. Lol, I blame the Baltic sun goddess Saule. xD

Anyways, I'm sure you'll find her. If we can't sort this out, I'll ask an Asatru practitioner about it, okay? :3 Though, I'm sure you'll find something about her on your own.

I've seen "Sol" listed as an alternative name. "Sunna" is more popular.

Technically, Sol is the old Norse name, Sunna is the old high german. Sol is more traditional in the literature but Sunna has become the more widley known and used form.

And, yes Namikikyo, her daughter will take her place in the sky after Ragnorok but as far as I can tell, the daughter is never named. Of course, I myself am still learning though I consider myself to be a Heathen.
