Have you ever felt like there was a part of your life that was so foundational to you, you would never be able to picture yourself without it?

Sometimes it's hard to put yourself in someone else's shoes. And sometimes you want to introduce something to someone because you find the concept so essential to your life.

This past school year I discovered the wonders of creative writing. I find it so amazing that I think, well, people haven't lived until they've written a story. Someone else, on the other hand, might think that I haven't lived until I've tried something they do.

This is a thought that tends to worry me, both ways. Maybe I haven't begun to live yet. Maybe there are things in life that I haven't discovered yet, that will someday be the focus of my life.

For example, before the movie Across the Universe came out, I couldn't recall ever having heard a Beatles song. And up until about a month ago, I couldn't have named two Beatles. Now I have 103 of their songs on my iPod... in fact, that's the only music I have on it.

Do you ever think you'll discover some life-changing thing that you'll regret not having heard about or tried before? Or do you know that's already happened?

What couldn't you live without?

Well..my best friend (who is my girlfriend and kinda sorta fiance) for one. but you gotta look at it this way - There are many ways to the top of the mountain, but only one veiw.

you can live your life to the fullest a thousand differant ways. To worry about what your not doing would only take away from what you are doing.
you know?

there are many things I could not live without, as in true indian hindu philosophy we must learn to disattach oneself from items and objects emotions and such like the buddist principle once one looses their ego and rises above it they have reached a higher level of conciousness where they realize that all these materialistics dont matter

My intelligence.
My ability to think freely.
My ability to express the above.

the thing i couldnt live without is death
because if you were to live forever you would go out of your mind eventually
even though death is scary too
just not as scary

You know, I had an interesting dream a week ago. In it, my sister Katie died and I was completely distraut. I keep saying she's the best... and she's like a parent to me. Since I live with my mother, and she's never around for me, I always look to Katie.

In my dream, I ran away from home after she died. I wanted to kill myself, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. (I think she killed herself, and I didn't want to hurt my family with another suicide.) It felt wrong, so I took what I needed in my backpack and walked out. I had something of an adventure, and felt better by the end of the dream. Somehow, I'd healed.

It felt like that's what it would be like in real life. If I'd had the guts to take my own life, I would have. I wouldn't want to live without her. But it wasn't that I couldn't live without her... I just wouldn't ever want to.

@Original question: I will interpret it figuratively to mean "What do you think is so extremely important in your life that without it you would not want to call living 'life' anymore?"

My answer: Hmmm, in addition to my reasoning abilities, I would say... Language? Other people? (not nec. friends, just other people in general. If I was the only human that exists life wouldnt be life anymore.) My body? (If I was a disembodied or otherwise immobile brain, life would be totally different.)

@d11371: I dont know, I think I might prefer madness to death... I will have to think about that one...

@Taylor + d11371: ...
