I always assumed I wasn't, maybe I'm a hypochondriac, but this has made me think twice about it: I've had a LiveJournal for almost 4 years now. Sometimes I'll go back and look at my posts from years ago, and the ones from 2002 and some of 2003, obviously my mood changes from day to day, but overall there's this incredible perkiness or bounciness or just in-your-face outgoing mood that doesn't seem like me much at all now. One of the reasons I've been a bit loathe to talk about this with a shrink is that during that period, probably 1999-2002, I was very sexually active. Like went around getting into guys' pants just because I could. I can't say I really regret it, I didn't do anything particularly bad, though I slept with some not-very-cute-at-all guys and I ask myself now wtf was I thinking. I threw myself at guys a lot, too, and some of them I'm embarassed to talk to now. A lot of that time I was this obnoxious, loud, slutty b***h, and now I'm starting to think that may have been a manic period. I know I have depression. My mom is bipolar and I think some other family members are as well. Was I just being a normal 19-22 year old? I'm really split on this. Any thoughts appreciated!

It is certainly possible since you have a heredtary history or bi-polar. But if you feel this way you should see a dr to better assess the possiblity . dont worry about telling them thinsg, they wont and shouldnt be judgemental they just work better if they have all the details.

It's possible. But I don't think it's really helpful to try to analyze such a huge section of your life and attempt to attribute it to a disorder. Self-diagnosis is never helpful, especially if the problems haven't recurred in your life since that time. If you're having a problem right now that your treatment for Depression isn't covering, then you need to talk to a doctor about it.

Thats kinda scary... self diagnosis not being helpfull. Does this mean we will be forever consulting doctors instead of dealing with our own problems?

(not to be too negative, im just interested in what is considered "healthy" for someone with a mental disorder as far as introspection goes.)

basically we are biased an acurate dianosis is without bias. that why its not a god idea to only trust your own feelings on the thing..hell if for instance your suffering from paranoia its logical youll be paranoid about your diagnosis. We taint our opinions of ourselves.

You have two choices. Either don't trust doctors and don't try to use their system without any qualifications. Or trust doctors and let them do their system right! If you don't have a problem that needs to be solved by doctors, then you don't have a medical problem, so you don't have to play doctor on yourself in order to solve your problem! It can seem kinda' complicated, but here's how the system works...

1.) You start having a set of problems that are ruining your life.
2.) You see a professional who slaps a label onto the set of problems.
3.) The professional administers treatments to your set of problems.

Though it may seem counter-intuitive, the system is NOT...

1.) You suspect you might get a label.
2.) You look actively for a set of problems.
3.) You give yourself that label.

Self-diagnosis is NEVER helpful, and is often harmful. It can make you imagine symptoms you don't have, or ignore symptoms you do have! If you are having a problem that needs medical treatment, then you have a problem, and you need to visit a doctor to find out what it is. Otherwise, you don't have to have a diagnosis to solve your problem if you don't need a diagnosis to solve your problem! Sorry if I'm just being confusing. I just want to get the point accross that a diagnosis is USELESS unless the prescribed treatment is to follow. And if you're going to get treatment from a doctor, you might as well get the trained professional to give you the proper diagnosis for treatment. If you aren't going to get treatment from a doctor, you don't need a diagnosis at all! I feel like I'm being redundant, so I'm going to shut up now.

while outwardly, you do seem to lean towards being bipolar (since I think another aspect of that is doing potentially self-harming things like your promiscuity) but I'm not a doctor so I wouldn't know. Kudzu's logic is sound, so I would go see a doctor (that's hypocritical on my part, but, I'd rather not see others in my position)

You're right. One of the reasons I haven't brought this up with my shrink or anyone else is because it hasn't really been a problem. Maybe it's morbid curiosity, maybe I'm a hypochondriac...maybe I'm hoping I'll be able to look forward to not being depressed so much! *shrug* These days I'm really depressed, maybe that's why my being happy seems so strange...

*hugs* I really hope you feel better...but at the same time, I have the same feeling of wishing I were bipolar instead of plain old depressed (and I do have those memories of giddy happiness like you) but sometimes it's better to get a professional opinion

your post is very interesting cus your don't really know what many will think of it i say there may be two possiblities you might have just been going through a manic episod or you were just being normal but if you think about it who decides if its normal to do those things?

I don't know - people do change over time, and you went from just leaving your teens to being an adult. There's probably going to be some change there for any human. But, you may actually be bipolar. I don't know you in real life, and only your doctor or phsychiatrist can give you a firm answer on that.
