Nikon is generally known as the best professional camera maker. (Not sure you can get one for below 500? Maybe try ebay.) Search for dSLRs (Digital SLR) or Prosumer cameras. A prosumer is what I have. It's a middle ground between manual (you can change the settings) and auto (the settings are set for you) cameras. Besides the megapixels, the lens on the camera is very important for quality. A decently priced good camera is the Canon Rebel. (It's below the megapixels you want, but many just starting photographers have and love it).
