Hello all. Ok, last weekend it was my mom's first organized trail ride with me and the rest of our group. Now my horse is fine on trails and with other horses and being away from the barn and her best barn buddy. But my mom's horse, a 6yr old Friesian mare. Now before I take you on our adventiure I'd rather not have a disscussion on her age, yes its really young especially for a new trail horse, but we have her we're not getting rid of her and she's is her trail mount, she just got back from 30 days professional training about a month before our ride, so she's aleast started. Heck i've even complained about her getting such a young horse for what she wants to do. My horse is 10 years old and is a been there done that kind of girl.
Anywhoo, let me continue. So we get there an unload and we tie them up one on each side of the trailer, not 5 mins go bye and there crying for eachother, luckily they settled down and munched on hay. So we tack up and go but Jasmine(mom's mare) is right up Cookie's(my girl) butt. Like if she's not within 2 feet of her a monster will come up and eat her. We are with two other ladies and i've ridden with them before, so Jasmine got to meet some new friends, but really I don't think she did. So we begin to trot and they canter and cookie goes into the canter and there Jasmine running like mad trying to keep up with Cookie. aqnd almost crashes into her. (and my mom said oh yeah we can trot, so it was planned transitions, not out-of-the-blue random ones)
Now Jasmine throught the ride is pretty good, goes through water, a bridge, mud, and isn't really phased by anything except puddles, she just didn't like them, she's occasionally shy away from them but not dramaticly. But when Cookie would get ahead she's trot up to her and be literally right up her butt, almost to a point where Cookie almost kicked her. Even when they were 4 feet away Jasmine would have to walk or trot to get right on top of cook.
So those incidents happend. We get back to the site and tie the up with some hay again and all of a sudden when my mom is taking off jasmine's bridle, she still had the reins over her head and Jasmine breaks free of mom's grasp and runs around the trailer to get to Cookie, bridle still around her neck. When we finally got her and put her halter on and re-tied her we had to open the trailer doors and open the stall divider so they could see eachother and just like that the crying stopped. Well should of done that before. So my question is, how do I control this so there isn't a failed trail ride again.
When we brought Jasmine to Vermont for her training the only objesction she had was leaving cookie and that lasted all of 10 mins, she was in the trailer wondering why she was seperated, but calmed down once we left. In vermont she was surpisingly fine, not crying or anything she was surrounded by 50 other friesians and a few young studs. She was fine about being without cookie the whole time. Cookie on the other hand was sad, but didn't do anything drastic like jump the fence and go on a mile long journey to find her.
I have a theory, that when they are together they want to be with eachother all the time, but if they are apart as in one is not in the same place as the other that they accept the fact that thier friend is not with them and they don't think about it. This was Jasmine's second time off the property since we got her two years ago.
Cookie's left many times. I also want to start to show Jasmine this year and I don't really think having cookie with her would be a good idea, I don't want a flash back to that trail ride. I want her to focus on me. So any ideas on how to work our there seperation problems? Thanks a bunch! sorry for my extreamly long message. Thanks!

I don't suppose you could edit your post into easier to read chunks. It made my eyes hurt xp
Oh and I may seem ignorant but I didn't think 6 was young for trail riding,or am I getting the definition of trail riding wrong?? It's like hacking right?

Minilin I don't suppose you could edit your post into easier to read chunks. It made my eyes hurt xp Oh and I may seem ignorant but I didn't think 6 was young for trail riding,or am I getting the definition of trail riding wrong?? It's like hacking right? Sorry about that, I fixed it. Oh i wouldn't think you were ignorant for saying that not at all. Just I would think alot of people would and then get into a discussion on that, where its not the point i'm making here. Well I guess it would be like hacking out, I don't often hear it called that but I suppose its the same thing. The trail riding i'm talking about it going outside of an arena in the woods on a trail.
