Which is most steampunk?
  Flogging Molly

For me, it's a style of music that blends folk/classical elements with modern styles/instruments. I have a bit of a broad view, but to me, while Abney Park definitely plays to the steampunk element. However, I would also say that Flogging Molly, Enya, and Lorena McKennit fit well into the steampunk world. Obviously, each of these has a different degree of modern-to-classic themes, but all of them blend the two in some way to make a style that is not wholly either.

What music do the rest of you listen to that you consider to be steampunk? Explain and discuss, if you please.

Gogol Bordello. I don't know why, but there's something very Steampunky about a load of gypsies playing punk music with violins and accordians.

Sounds like a good pick to me. Then again, I think just about anything involving a load of gypsies has potential. Ha.

Gogol Bordello's awesome, though I've never seen them as particularly steampunk. Perhaps? In that case, Jason Webley might apply as well, with his accordion and such. I'd agree that Celtic punk like Flogging Molly may fit, as they're connected to old Britain.

I'm a fan of the Decemberists, with their shanties and tales of Victorian doomed romance. I'm also quite fond of punk/dark cabaret, the Dresden Dolls and others, which I'd count as possibly dieselpunk. I suppose my definition is rather loose as well. It might be more accurate to classify the bands I've mentioned as anachronistic, rather than pure steampunk.

As has been said in numerous threads before, the notion of "steampunk music" is rather difficult to pin down, what with various bands claiming the whole steampunk moniker all having different styles of music. I do like your definition of it though. I'm not sure I can completely understand the association of Enya with steampunk though; she always reminded me of æthereal, Lord of the Rings, Celtic, somewhat mediæval stuff more than anything else. But, like I said, steampunk music (and steampunk itself, for that matter) is incredibly loosely defined.

I had never thought of Gogol Bordello as steampunk, but I suppose they are 'punk' and have the whole 'old-world' air about them, so why not? =]

I've always considered the Arcade Fire to be somewhat steampunk, given their instrumentation and dress.

It's a very indefinite topic really. I consider any music which sounds like it would have been created at the time or music with similar aspects to that potentially steampunk, (anything remotely Victorian sounding). Folk music often fits in well. The topic of the song can also affect this. To me the Clockwork Quartet is extremely steampunk, more so than Abney Park (which I still like).
The Decemberists (from the few songs I've heard) I think I'd class as steampunk as well.
Gogol Bordello could very well be, I've always rather liked the idea of steampunk gypsies. I quite feel like drawing some now actually...

These are just my opinions however and I'm sure other people may have a completely different idea. ^^;

P.S. Thanks for the mention of Arcade Fire, I hadn't heard them before but I quite like the song by them I'm listening too now. :]

Well, I think the idea of Enya in steampunk came from some of the lyrical pieces I've heard, particularly on the album "A Day Without Rain". I can easily imagine a flying stage platform descending upon the concert venue to the sounds of Tempus Vernum, settling into a temporary scaffold as the song reaches a close, the band to ferry back to their waiting airship to head for the next location as soon as the gig is through.

Ahh, I see. I can definitely understand that based on the airy, flowy nature of a lot of her music.

You're welcome. =] They're one of my favorite bands and Funeral is definitely among my top ten albums. I own it on vinyl too, for that extra old-school touch.

definitely the decemberists and gogol bordello.
uhm. most of the songs on the "where's neil when you need him?" album (dedicated to and listed under neil gaiman, of course.)
funnily enough, while i agree that abney park is very much steampunk-related, i just don't have the heart to listen to most of their music. except for the airship pirates track on lost horizons, which i love.
i would rummage through my itunes library to find more, but i am not thrilled with the prospect of scanning 75gb of music.

Pink Martini and Danny Elfman in his Corpse Bride mode. I don't know why, but I always listen to lounge music when I'm in a steampunk mood.

I rather like Vernian Process. A bunch of their tracks are available for free on last.fm, and I've downloaded all of those.

I love the industrial sound, especially when incorperated with violins and any older instruments. Cellos
