I'm cosplaying for the first time and I need to find a wig. I plan on cosplaying Gene Starwind from Outlaw Star but I can't seem to find the exact wig I want so I need help on trying to figure out how to dye or style the hair myself. I have a couple wigs I've found that I think would work if I customized them a bit more.

User Image This one has the sort of style I want but I would need to cut it down and style it.

User Image I'm looking at the bottom one in the left hand corner, the brown-red. On this one, I'm looking to style it.

User Image This is the closest but it's too dark and I think I'd have a hard time dying it the right color if I could at all.

User Image This one is also very close but, again, I'd need to dye it.

So I'm asking, is it easier to dye or style fake wigs? And which one do you think would work best for the character I'm trying to cosplay?

Where are you looking at wigs? Are you willing to buy from the internet, or only from local places? Details like these help us narrow down wig shops we can give you for reference~

I would go with a wig if you plan on cosplaying him more than once. That way, if you want to do anything else with your hair, his will always stay the same no matter what.

Also, if you had any links or pictures up, they're not showing. =x

EDIT: Okay, so I looked at the urls in your post and they're showing up now. It looks like you're willing to buy from the internet, so what's your price range, where have you looked, things like that. =]

The store I'm looking at is near by and I can easily get there.
I'll need to use a wig because my hair is nothing like that and I don't want to cut it just for that.

All right, so I'm assuming that means internet is out?

As for the wigs you linked, I would say to go with the second one, if only because I've heard that those super spiky styles are hard to style flat without a ton of hairspray or hot water. But other than that, the first is the one I would pick. Especially if you can get it in the right color.

The third is one you would not be able to dye the right color no matter how hard you tried, as sad as that is. =/

I hope I'm making sense. Really sorry if I'm not. ><

personnel expereience, its eaiser to dye then style them, if you have the patience you can style them but its not like working with real hair, dying is complicated to but as long as you get the right dye and follow instructions its not that hard personnely if it were me i would dye the last one but if don't want to risk it you can go for the styling, just make sure if you do style everything is how you want it you only get one chance,

as for advice, take your time, use a good quailty brush, comb and brush from the inside out that way it doesn't stress or strech the fibers, when styling always make sure to have a wig head or something the equivalent there of trust me it is needed, use a bowl or the such if you don't have access to one. I have messed up more then one wig because I neglected to use a wig head, use a good quality mousse/gel the basic type you would find in fredmeyer or hottopic or the such does not work very well for fibers, you can try it but no promises, if nothing else go into your local salon and ask about it, wig styling is a common thing, I'm sure they would be more then happy to answer any questions and they might be able to help and or give you pointers if they aren't busy, and they definitely have the right mousse.

now for the dying, couple pieces of advice on that one, use a good quality dye, again hottopic dye wont work, most synthetic wigs will take a nylon dye, most people recommend using a wig dye which I agree if you have a place available but if not you could always consider using Acetate nylon dye, but if you can get wig dye go for that, always dye in a stainless steel sink unless you want your sink stained, if you don't have a stainless steel sink you can use a bucket just as well, remember whatever the dye touchs will be dyed so dress and prep accordingly, there are also a couple other methods using sharpies and fw ink here's the link

FW Ink:

Sharpies:

here's a general FAQ about wig styling and dying

good luck hope I was able to help you a little bit everything is to be taken with a grain of salt, this is just what my 8 years have taught me, wigs are a pain, I use my natural hair as much as possible for my cosplays/cross plays but if done right you will develop your own methods and rhymes to make it work just the way you want and it will be as good as the real thing!

That's AWESOME. I'll definitely use those for future reference.
