Black Metal:
A genre of "controversy" from the playing style, and the ideologies of bands, to the unrelated actions of band members. In terms of music, black metal has undergone a few changes over the years.
1st wave: Really more thrash metal then black, most of these bands, like Venom, and Mercyful Fate, were really only tied together with the satanic theme of their lyrics. Venom's Album "Black Metal" is what coined the name for this genre. How ever it wasn't to the second wave that a sound was given to the genre.
2nd wave: This is more what people tend to think of when they think of black metal, Mayhem, Immortal, Burzum, Darkthrone, and Emperor. They defined the sound for black metal, and made headlines with their antics. Disregarding the drama that followed the band members, and getting to the point: Black metal is defined by staccato picking (though not necessary it is generally employed by every black metal band in at least one song), blast beats, dark melodies, very little harmony in riffs, harsh vocal delivery (though again not required), the recording quality is usually extremely lo fi, with some bands recording with a tape recorder tossed in front of them(this is not the case with some newer bands who have picked up a more atmospheric, but no so much lo fi approach.) and the most important, a Dark, evil, or oppressive atmosphere through all the music. If you listen to black metal it should feel like you are listening to the cacophony echoing out of the depths of hell.

I usually don't like to make a lot of suggestions regarding getting into black metal, because it's a pretty rough genre to get into any ways, but also keeping some bands to yourself is just some thing you do in this genre. Every one who listens has their little gems they don't want any one else to know about.
Any ways for this genre I would suggest first looking into all the first and second wave bands.
Mainly:
Venom, Bathory, Mercyful Fate, Celtic frost, Immortal, Burzum, Darkthrone, and Emperor. (I left out mayhem, because really they aren't that amazing, but if you want to be through feel free to check them out as well. I feel like Burzum coves most of what mayhem can give you, and does it much better as well.)
In addition I would recommend checking out Agalloch, Primordial, and Dawn, since they have a little more of an artsy flare, and aren't as difficult as most black metal bands.

Power metal:

Power metal is a pretty vast type of genre, from it's quirky lyrics to it's insane guitar solos. When people think of power metal, they think of Helloween as it's creator, well I learned that Europe (band) was the first to be considered "power metal" but didn't stay with it, unlike Helloween.

Lyrics:
When people think of power metal, they think of fantasy, faeries, dragons and what not, that's only one branch of power metal.
Others include mythology, emotional struggles, war and death, friendship and hope, and personal struggles, but are not limited to those.

Vocals:
Power metal vocals have a wide range from very high, to bass tone, but for the most part are aimed to be very clear. A lot of vocals heard in power metal are very clear and tend to be of a higher pitch than most other genres, if not all other genres. A common thing in vocals is a high pitched scream, such as Rob Halford or Ralf Scheepers. Some also record double layered vocals like Hansi Kursch of Blind Guardian, to add a choral effect to their vocals.

Instruments:
Power metal usually consists of the usual drums, guitar and bass, but also usually have a keyboarder in it and sometimes another guitarist. The drummer usually has 2 bass drums and 2 foot pedals so they can double bass during the songs. They also use blast beats in some of the work. The guitar/bass is usually done with a sense of speed, and also a sense of rhythm and melody to it. They usually play streams of notes, change chords slowly, and have intense solos when done well. Keyboards are fairly common among power metal bands, using them to implement symphonic and melodic elements to their music.

Bands:
If you are new to power metal, then check out the basics of power metal.
Bands like Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Stratovarius, Dragonforce, Helloween, Rhapsody of Fire, Virgin Steele and Sonata Arctica, just to name some.
And then if you like it, check out bands like:
Domine, Derdian, Galneryus, Dream Evil, Angra, Hibria, Altaria, X-Japan, Helstar, Drakkar, and Falconer, just to name some.

If you have any questions or wanting me to Rec any other bands, than PM me, and I'll answer anything you have to ask.

Well they still partially sound like power metalm, but yea, you're true, Power metal taks a lot from speed, that's why they sound similar. I guess I'm replacing those two with two actual power metal bands smile

There's no power metal influence in either of them I'm sure. Speed metal is more like a middle ground of thrash and Heavy though. I'll have to listen to white skull again to make sure though.
Listening to white skull again, maybe you are right there.

No, I said that power metal (the genre itself) takes a lot from speed metal.
Yea, cause I thought White Skull sounded kinda like power metal, but not fully power metal.

Well power metal is really more just branched off of heavy metal, because speed metal is more thrashy you know? They don't have as harmonic riffs and stuff.
But yeah listening to white skull I think that would work. But wolf (assuming it is the japanese one.) is def. speed metal.

I'd have to say he's right about White Skull. They have some stuff that sounds more like power metal, but it all depends on what of thiers your listening to.

Yea, The Wolf I got (Evil Eye album) is deffinetly speed metal. Yea, speed is thrashy, but power metal takes a lot from speed because of the speed they play at. They're like speed, mixed with symphonic, melodic and clean as hell vocals. For some of it that is.

@ Goshikku: Yea, some of their songs really sound like power metal, and some sound like speed metal, depends on what ones you listen to.

Speed metal isn't name so simply because of fast playing though. It's more, that it was more aggressive then heavy metal, in it's riffing, as if it was heavy metal on speed. I'm pretty sure.

Shred Metal:

Shred Metal's Purpose is to showcase the technical/musical skills of the headlined guitarist, such as Yngwie Malmsteen (Which really isn't that good) Cacophony, Perpetual burn, and many others. Usually Categorized by an extreme display of wankery, it can be very technical and seem very boring to non-guitarists/musicians.

A couple of good shred artists include: Michael Angelo Batio, Michael Romeo, Tiago Della Vega, Rusty Cooley, Jason Becker, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Marty Friedman, Robert Marcello, Michael Lee Firkins, Paul Gilbert, and many more..

Who would know better than a guitarist about shred? smile

But it's not because it's faster that it's named that. It's like a middle ground in evolution between Heavy metal and thrash. The reason it's called speed metal is because it's aggressive, like if you were on the drug speed.
