I'll make a small list of the thing you can do on Gaia. First off, the best thing you can do right out of the gate. Is to try different things to find out what you like. The avatar system is very complex with a large range of items to collect. The best advice I can give on how to make gold. Would be to check out the approved guides sub-forum. In a guild called T3e Vending Guild. By the time I found that place. I'd already had to learn everything that those guides had to offer. It would have saved me quite a bit of time.
If you are into Role-playing. Then there are a few pieces of advice I can give you. The Role-playing community has its own subculture of rules. I'll provide you with a basic definition of some common terms used:
Non-literate role-playing- Non-literate role-plays are often very layed back in terms of there requirements. Any role-play that doesn't specify that it is a Non-literate, semi-literate, literate or Advanced Literate role-play. Falls into this category. This means that your post length or style of writing can be whatever you want to it be unless otherwise specified. With all "levels" of Role-play. There are rules that the thread creator will set for the thread. They will often use acronyms to describe what is not allowed. A few of the most common ones are.
Goddmodding- The act of performing any action that is unrealistic. There is often quite a bit of leniency on this rule. Generally, higher "leveled" roleplays. Generally have more strict rules regarding this rule.
Semi-Literate- This means that proper grammar is required. Your post length will require only a small amount of data. Perhaps five sentences in most cases. Though an occasional couple sentence post will not be frowned upon.
Literate- This means that you are expected to type in a literate fashion. Proper spelling and grammar are required for this type of role-play. Along with a fair amount of data for each post that is written. The requirement will be specified on the front page of the role-playing thread.
Advanced Literate- This is a tag I recommend staying away from. Unless you possess a decent amount of skill in creative writing. Spelling, Grammar and a very high amount of text is required in every post. Most likely, anyone that does not adhere to the guidelines set for the role-play. Will most likely be kicked by the creator. Or just plain shunned by the other people typing. Its also required in this type of Role-play. Proof-reading is recommended though not needed. This aggressive behavior on the part of the thread creators can occur in Literate role-plays as well. Most of the time, even if a thread meets the requirements for an Advanced Literate role-play. It will just say literate.
Proof-reading- Proof reading is where after you finish with a post. You read back through it. To correct any grammatical errors. Correct any spelling mistakes. As well as add in any detail you decide to add to you post. While doing this, you can also delete parts of your post if they don't sound correct. Like, on occasion I will say something twice. So when I proof read, I will get rid of the unneeded words in my post.
Some last notes, in almost every case. The "level" will be determined by the amount of data written. This doesn't mean that these are skilled writer. I've found in a number of cases. That the people in these "literate" types of threads. Possess only a fair amount of ability in story writing. Though more often than not. The people in these threads enjoy just joining instead of writing role-plays.
GM- The GM is the one that writes the plot. They have control over many aspects of the plot. The GM will not always be the one that creates the thread. Though they will be the one moving the story ahead.
