My parents had bought a shy Golden Retriever puppy before I was even born. Her name was Shadow...As a puppy Shadow was always playful towards my sister w,ho had been a baby when they bought Shadow.Shadow loved to tear up my sisters pajamas and run around with her. When I was born Shadow always slept by my crib and that habit stayed till she couldn't make it up the stairs. As a child I always felt near to Shadow because we were the same. When Shadow was a puppy a couple had bought her then taken her back the next day for an uknown reason. I was adopted when I was a baby. As Shadow grew older she was calm but loved to play. Her favorite seasons were Fall and Winter. Fall was her favorite because I would bury her in the leaves then she would pop out and roll around. When I got older in the winter I created this game called 'Mittens' I would put on a pair of mittens and she would pull them off and run around trying to escape my grasp. She would never give up the mittens till you told her to drop them. As Shadow got older she devoloped arthritis and it always pained her. After a while it made it extremely difficult to get up the stairs and to my room. My parents would help her up until my dad had to carry her. She grew blind and deaf. It was hard to see her not respond when you called her name. A lump grew on her stomach and the Vet ignored it, saying that it would go away. That never happened...It continued to get bigger. When she was about 13 1/2 we finally got it checked out and a different vet said it was a tumor. She slowly got more lethergic and finally she stopped eating and drinking. Her ribs stuck out. Shadow hadn't been doing to well. She would puke almost everyday and other things. I went to a soccer game on a Saturday and Shadow laid down and wouldn't get back up for nothing. My mom comforted her while me and my dad were gone. When we got back we loaded her into the car and drove her to the vets. Her blood work had been fine but somthing was wrong. As the vet spoke to my parents I faced away from them and tried so hard not to cry at what he was saying. I heard the words"We could put her on drugs but...I think its time..."I couldn't hold it in. We were all crying. She puked up blood. While the vet put her to sleep I went to the car....Shadow was such a sweet dog...she didn't deserve all the pain that happened to her...That day my sister had gone to visit a college and she wasn't their when Shadow passed. My family and I still can't get over her death...We all miss her so much and would do anything to have her back.

A Pets Prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in the world is more grateful for kindness than mine. Do not break my spirit with a stick, for although I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will teach me more quickly the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voices are the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when I hear your step. When the weather is cold and wet please take me inside for I am a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements, and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food so that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side standing ready to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.

And master, when I am very old and the Greatest Master sees fit to deprive me of my health and sight, do not turn me away, rather, see that my trusting life is gently taken away and I shall leave you knowing with the last breath I draw, my fate was always safest in your hands.

Amen.

A "GOLDEN" GOOD-BYE (To our Golden Retriever)

I sit and try to write the words, I want your heart to hear.
Hoping to find some comfort, in the fact that you're not here.
I look out into the open field, that you once occupied,
Knowing now that field is empty, because my love, you've died.
I do believe with all my heart, that your soul has gone to be,
With all the other angel dogs, that you were meant to see.
We will have to stay behind, until God calls us too,
So do not be afraid, that he's only called for you.
The water is still, in the pond that you played,
And your bed is so empty, where your pretty head laid.
Our bed is too empty, where you once laid between,
the two people who LOVED you and now only dream,
That one day our eyes will shut one last time,
and you will come greet us, angel of mine.
Until then, I'll keep trying to see through my tears,
with memories you left us, to reflect through the years.
We'll never forget one minute we spent,
of loving and laughing, of places we went.
And I dread the day that your scent disappears,
for it's "proof" to me, Shadow, that you were just here!
But one day will come, when we'll start to see through,
the pain of the moment, and remember just "you".
Now you go and play, and look down when you can,
remembering we love you, and this isn't the end.

Hi!- I just wanted you to know that God loves your pet and you! Prayers are powerful and always answered by God (even when we do not accept or understand the answer), You are not alone, and there are no accidents in life. Everything, even things we as humans do not understand, occurs for a reason. I believe animals have souls and go to heaven. If you need to talk further about it, please don't hesitate to PM me. Much love.........

I'm real sorry that you done lost your dog. Losing somethin' that important puts tears to my eyes. I, too, have suffered when my Husky died. She had a tumor in her liver, they say. I watched her die in the wee hours of the mornin', and I was yelling and screaming for her to come back into our lives. She was 10 years old, and her name was Shauna. That was some 23 years ago. I'm older now, but that still ought not take the hurt away. Sorry for yer loss.

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your dog... It's never fun or easy to lose such a dear family member. I hope you and your family are supporting each other and that you know that there is much love and support from people here at the guild.

I just wanted to let you know that you and your family are in my prayers, as is your beloved dog. Since I was diagnosed with chronic pain, my cats and bunny have kept me grounded, and offered me support and love during the toughest times. I couldn't imagine my life without them, so I am praying that you can remember the good times with your pet, and always feel the love she gave you forever. Keep strong, and may you feel God's presence during this hard time, reassuring you that Shadow is now in the loving arms of God and his angels. xox In prayers and love, Ailsa xox

bittersweet and evocative
