Ok, so in my dojo we started an MMA program to help get the rent paid. Chris (sandan and head instructor's son) said he wanted to get classes started so I agreed. After a while, he got a new job and stopped showing up to teach because of work (understandable) but never tried to get any new hours after 4 months, I got sick of it (I hate the idea of teaching people to fight just to fight.) and was about to close it down, when one of Chris' friends asked to take over, I said sure cuz i really didn't care. Now he's trying to institute a belt ranking system, he didn't ask anyone in the karate classes how to tie a belt, and he allows the MMA students to just leave them sitting around on the floor. (big no no in my style and system.)

I'm just curious if that would bother any one else?

Actually, I'd be kinda upset. Although an obi is meant to hold your pants, it's still a tradition started by Kano Jigoro, the founder of judo, and you still have to show respect for it by taking care of your belt.

Ya, that is going to be one of many things i plan on bringing up w/ senseis rod and mike. along with the way the guy leaves his crap in the middle of the lobby.
he wears his shorts under his jeans, so he just drops his pants in the lobby and leaves his duffel bag there and left a weight vest laying around. The MMA guys don't have any respect for the facilities we're letting them use.

You should talk to him about it. If you already did or if he keeps doing it, give him the boot.

oh ya, we already talked to him about it. when i was teaching the class, i got on the whole class about. Since i'm not the owner of the dojo, and only an assistant instructor, i have to talk to the owner and head instructor.

I find that to tell the truth sort of upsetting. I was taught to try to care for my uniform including my belt. I'm always supposed to fold my gi and never leave my belt on the floor. In ancient times the obi was white and turned black from wear not like the obi's we have now. The obi is supposedly what holds your knowledge if you were to ever to wash your belt it would wash away your knowledge. Now we do not only have one belt but multiple belts as we change rank. To continue the "tradition" it is said that our knowledge is past down to the next belt we earn.
It is very inappropriate for the students to be tying their belt incorrectly after passing white belt rank.
I hope these students will be taught proper etiquette of the dojo.

Well, like i said, these are MMA students, and they guy who took over the class is...well, i'm pretty sure he's seen one to many bruce lee movies...and wants to desperately find a way to tie the MMA into the karate, now that me and the original instructor aren't teaching any more.

oh, and a new development in the midwest amature MMA scene, all MMA gyms apparently being required to have ranking systems, because a guy got paralyzed in his first fight against some one who had a good number of fights behind him.

Sorry about my ranting. PFFFF seriously they think to make a ranking system AFTER someone gets paralyzed.

i saw the video, it was something that could have happened to any one. the guy who got paralyzed was in a guillotine choke, and tripped his opponent, and his neck broke when they fell.
