Leander's Story

The male of many blues walked through the jungle, his paws lightly hitting the ground under him as he moved along the worn down path. He was traveling once more, moving away from society, moving away from all interactions with others. Many might think that he was off to find a woman to court for his own. Yet in fact there was a different reason he had shut himself out. Today was the only day he couldn’t put on a brave face. He followed the path until he reached the mountains.

Leander let his head tilt up towards the mountain side, a hint of sadness in his light green eyes. Letting his eyes slip closed as he fought back a single tear which threatened to fall down his the side of his muzzle, he sat back on his hunches his tail curling around him. His right paw came up to necklace around his neck, his ears shifted back on his head, the feathered headdress being pushed back, as his mind slipped from the present into a memory from his past:

He was young and it was during the time he was on the search for his true love. Leander was taking the path up and into the mountains when he found her. The most beautiful creature he had ever seen, looking out on the horizon on the path before him. The light blue pattern on her fur mixed in with the whites and light purple splotches, her eyes where indigo just like the tribal-like necklace around her neck and the feathered headdress on her head, both complementing and bringing out the purple in her fur. The sun just made her fur dazzle even more so. It was love at first sight, it was then he knew that this woman was to be his soul mate.

Carefully he bounded over to her on the narrow path to make his introduction to the enticing female. “A fine day we are having today isn’t it?” He began, “The bright suns ray’s smiles warmly down upon us.” Leander gave her his best smile, yet it faded when he had forgotten to introduce himself properly. “Excuse me, it seems I forgot to introduce myself fair maiden,” he muttered a bit sheepishly. Even so he gave a small bow of his head as a polite gesture, “I am Leander.”

The female took her attention off of the sky and faced the male as he spoke to her. She had to admit to herself he was handsome with his many blues and uniquely patterned fur. “Yes, yes it is a beautiful day today.” She agreed her voice having a certain ring to it. Giggling softly as his expression changed as he realized he forgot to introduce himself. The way he addressed was a bit surprising. Many males she had come crossed in the past were not as gentleman-like as this one, most had been rude. A small smile spread crossed the female’s lips as she gave her own introduction. “It is a pleasure to meet you Sir Leander,” She began giving her own bit of flattery to the conversation. “You may call me Hero.”

“Lady Hero then,” Leander replied back his smile returning. ‘Sir’, that was quite different from what he was normally addressed as. His weight shifted on his paws as his thoughts began to run on him. His mind was going a bit blank; he really couldn’t help but stare at her beauty. He really couldn’t think of what else to say, her beauty was literally taking his breath away. “Um…” He trailed off trying to find the air to create the words he wanted to say.

Another small giggle escaped the female, an eye brow rose as she questioned him, “Lady Hero eh? I beat you call all the females you meet ‘Lady.’” Her smile widened as she spotted a faint blush upon the male’s face.

There was a bit of silence as he tried once more to form words. Finally they emerged, “No, just you,” He admitted softly. Half of him wanted to hide his face from her view, slightly embarrassed at that fact, the other half of him wanted to keep watching her. One would say he had fallen head over heels for her, in truth he had. The male of many blues wanted to get closer to this female before him, he wanted to know more about her, and he wanted to spend more time with her.

Her smile remained on her face; he was quite adorable when embarrassed. “Well Sir Leader, it is a pleasure to meet you,” She started off lifting her head back towards the sky, “But it seems that I should be heading off.” She moved herself on the side of him on the narrow path, passing him, returning down the path he had come. Hero wanted to see if he would stop her from leaving.

He turned when she passed him. Wait what was he doing, he couldn’t just let her get away like this. “Wait, Lady Hero,” He called out after her. “The day is still young; if you have nothing else to do today I would be honored if you would join me for a walk further up the mountain path.” He inquired.

Hero stopped in her tracks and turned her head over her shoulder, she stared at him silently as she pondered what he had asked. A half playful smile crossed her lips, “Alright I will join you,” She turned herself around and joined him at his side on the rocky path.

The memory faded.

As Leader’s mind returned from his memory he had found that he had moved from his spot at the bottom of the mountain path to where he had met his one and only beloved Lady Hero. Paws padding lightly on the rocky path he continued upward, until he reached a cave. Once he reached a cave his mind slipped to another memory of the past:

Much time had passed since their first meeting; they had grown to be friends, and soon lovers. When their happiness had risen to great heights they had finally decided to create a family. It wasn’t before long that Lady Hero became gravely ill. Leander had cared for his lady the best he could during her last days. Even with Leander’s care and great love for her, that alone couldn’t save her. It wasn’t before long, that sickness had taken her life away from him.

He mourned for a long time in the cave in which they called home. Leander had shut himself out from the world, closing all emotions he once had and locking them deep inside him. At that moment living without her felt like death itself.

It hadn’t taken him long before he realized that his one and only love would not want him to continue on the rest of his life like this. He would push on, living his life as he pleased, deciding that each year on the anniversary of her death he would return to their home once more.

The memory faded, once more returning him back into reality.

Another sigh escaped him as he sat down in the front of their cave. Letting the memories of their good times open in his mind, he whispered softly into the darkness of the empty cave. “I have returned once more Lady Hero, my love.” He lifted the necklace once more into his paws, staring down at it. It was the very same necklace she had given him during those last few days. Finally that threatening tear dropped down the side of his face. It ran through his fur and dropped onto the cold stone floor next to him. “Forever and always my love…forever and always,” He whispered and let the necklace drop down onto his chest, returning it to its rightful place, next to his heart. Where his memories for her will always be.

He would always wear the necklace in her memory along with the indigo feathered headdress he wore and accessories. They were all so he wouldn’t forget her. He stayed at the front of the cave letting his mind drift upon his happy memories of the past, until the sun began to set. “I will see you next year my love. Good-bye Lady Hero, until we meet again my love.” He whispered into the cave, as if her sprit could hear his words. With that he left moving down the mountain path. His tears would dry until he returned next year, and his love would stay firm and always to his one and true love.
