Warm and fuzzy feelings are only that. And the fuzz only really appears to fill a space. It's more like a sort of fluff that is more full of air than anything else. It's not exactly solid. So while Warrick felt these warm, fuzzy feelings... He was also aware of a vast emptiness. He felt the spaces that weren't really full. He felt the parts where nothing seemed to fit. And because he was so aware of this, the spaces that were filled seemed incredibly insignificant. He wondered what exactly he was doing wrong.

It was a nice day, at least. Well, it was Warrick's idea of a nice day. The sky was grey and large clouds were rolling in. It smelled like a storm and he could feel the thunder though he couldn't hear it. He could taste the lightning he did not yet see. It was exactly the perfect weather for walking. And walking was something that he seemed to find himself doing a lot of lately. Especially with Fiona. They couldn't really do much else. No dinner, and nothing too social. She was a saint for putting up with him.

Currently they were wandering around a nice park near a lightly wooded area not far from Warrick's office at Central. Yes, he had one now. He was doing real work. But today he was off, anyway, and so was she. It was a good time for a date. Both soldiers felt awkward about as well as enjoyed the feeling of not being in uniform. Fiona was wearing a very pretty blue dress and some nice sandals. She had her hair mostly down, which was odd for her, but it looked very pretty. Warrick was wearing dark grey slacks and black shoes. He had on a light blue shirt that, oddly, almost matched her dress though it was a few tones off. His suspenders were actually in use, and he HAD had a nice black jacket on, a little long, but now it was over Fiona's shoulder.

"It's going to rain," Fiona said, squinting up at the sky. "I think so," Warrick said, smiling fondly at the same sky. He had his black scarf on. "Perhaps we should go inside... I can't get this dress wet. I can't get wet," Fiona said, sounding distressed. Warrick laughed at her lightly and she scowled, "Don't you laugh at me, Dracula," she said accusingly. Warrick shifted his eyes over to her. He was about to say something else when it DID start to rain. It came pouring down suddenly and Fiona squeaked in response. She headed for the nearest tree to take cover, using Warrick's jacket like an umbrella as well.

Warrick followed. When he reached her he gave her a funny look, "It's just rain," he said. Fiona scowled some more, "And I bet you like it, you freak," she said. "I do," Warrick admitted. "Well, I can't get wet! Lets go inside," she said, glancing out from under the tree warily. "Lets stay. It's romantic," Warrick countered. "I'm going in," Fiona ducked out from under the tree and quickly made her way across the park, or attempted to, anyway. Warrick caught up and stopped her, "Hey, you're not melting. What are you afraid of?" he mused. Fiona shook him off of her, "Come in or don't come in. I'm going. If you want to get all way then dry yourself off on your way back inside if you intend to keep my company," she said, though it was probably also a real request. Warrick laughed a bit again as she pulled away and hurried off. And soon he was left alone, glad no one had witnessed that scene. He hadn't learned to give in to the woman entirely yet. He would need to practice that if he ever wanted a real girl of his own. Especially Fiona Branyon.

To be perfectly honest, Ace enjoyed his days off more than the days he was on duty. Though this was probably to be expected of the young man. He liked to think that he would spend time with friends on his days off, though he didn't exactly have people that he spent time with. Of course, except for Warrick... but the man had a life of his own. A life that he may or may not have been trying to share with someone.

Ace had to admit that Fiona was a very pretty woman. He had a feeling that she hadn't exactly liked him from the beginning, but he didn't really have a problem with that himself. He had never been one to care about what people thought about him, or worry about if they liked him or not. The young man was always moving and traveling anyway. He never gave people the chance to have an opinion about him, and if they ever developed one, he would be gone and since he knew he would never see them again, he wouldn't really care.

Anyway, if Warrick wanted to be with Fiona and that would make him happy, Ace hoped that it all went well for him... though he found himself wondering if Warrick would forget all about him in the excitement of a romantic relationship. It was a sad thing to think about, but it was also something entirely possible.

On this particular day, Ace found himself heading to the library. He tended to spend time there, though he had done so only to study before his tests. Now it was just sort of a habit, making the journey from his dorm to the library. It was raining now, but Ace didn't mind so much. He had brought an umbrella just in case the clouds decided that they wanted to dump on him. And since it had, the young man was kept dry. He was dressed very much in the way that he tended to dress. He had on a pair of dark brown slacks, black loafers, and a white button-up shirt though it was left untucked and the top couple of buttons were left undone. Over this he was wearing a brown tweed jacket and his hat was in place on his head.

Taking a short cut through the park so that he didn't get too wet, he came across the lt. colonel. Briefly, the teenager stopped when he spotted him there getting soaked in the pouring rain. But then he approached him, and once he came to stand beside him, he raised the umbrella just enough so that it was shielding Warrick as well. "Do you always dress nice and then go stand out in the rain? Or is this a special occasion?"

Ace was a welcome surprise. The sort that wasn't really such a surprise at all. Warrick had come not to be very shocked by the young man's sudden appearance. He hadn't even really noticed him entirely, in fact, until the rain suddenly stopped. And then there was the feeling of Ace, followed shortly by the actual sight of him. It made Warrick smile.

"Not all of the time," Warrick admitted, then added, "Only when I'm feeling romantic, mostly. Which often seems to mean I end up alone," he joked. Of course, this was very true. It was one of those sad sort of jokes that was only humorous because there was truth in it. He glanced back in the direction Fiona had gone, where he had watched her form disappear through the falling rain. He was doing it wrong again, wasn't he?

When Warrick looked back at Ace again, however, he was still smiling, "You came prepared to keep me dry, I'm flattered. Though it seems like a lot of romance is being wasted considering the situation. Shouldn't we both be sharing umbrellas with pretty girls? Then again, maybe I read too much. I most certainly find myself talking too much... At least to you, in any case," he added. More honesty.

"I don't want to keep you," he added, his smile becoming that tired one. "I suppose I should go back in... And dry off so I'm allowed to speak to my girl," he glanced back toward the building he had come from, "Maybe I'll stay in the rain for a little while longer first," he said, then lightly pushed Ace's umbrella away. He liked the water, and sharing umbrellas forced people to be so close... He still wasn't used to being close to anyone.

"And then I show up to save the day and make sure you're not alone... and dry." Ace joked in response to Warrick's sad humor. He laughed a little bit under his breath when the older man pushed him gently away. Regaining his balance, he lightly shoved him right back after the umbrella was situated once again over his head so that he wouldn't get wet.

Now that Warrick had an office here in central it was more likely for them to run into each other like this. Especially since Ace was a soldier himself now. The younger man liked having someone to run into. Occasionally he chatted with one of the girls who worked at the library. The pretty one with the short hair... but that wasn't exactly the same as his relationship with Warrick. She was more of an acquaintance he supposed.

"I guess I could go waste my romance elsewhere." The younger military man mused, glancing back towards the way that Warrick had and then looking up at the man once more. "Since it seems that you have some romance to be wasting of your own." Ace allowed a small smirk to find it's way to his lips. He probably would have been lying if he said he didn't like being near Warrick. It really was an odd sort of relief to know that there was someone who more or less knew him.

This was sort of a strange conversation. Warrick had never really had much experience in actual romance. Most of his romance involved romantic notions he read in books or considered in his head. And now whenever he tried working some of his own he seemed to fall short in some manner. He wasn't sure how to correct this. Joking about it only helped mildly. He didn't respond well to failure on his own part. His mind was always working a way to fix whatever his failures were.

Ace somehow seemed to make it not matter. Warrick felt comforted speaking to him, no matter what they were talking about. And being able to joke as they did was nice. It felt real. It felt like the way a friendship really should be. He even found himself missing that presence. Acknowledging this made Warrick feel very strange, but he figured this was due to the fact that he had never really felt that for someone before. Who did he have to miss? Fiona was always around, and even when she wasn't he knew he'd eventually see her again. And while he could now say the same for Ace, it was just different with the young man. He was different.

The last little comment made Warrick's smile shift into a smirk, and he stepped back under the umbrella and thus closer to Ace at the same time so he could lean down a bit over the younger soldier to speak to him. "Your romance? Here I thought we were talking about mine. If you have some of your own what are you doing wasting your time here with me? I'm no expert, myself, but I know enough to know you're not going to find yourself experiencing romance to the fullest potential standing around in the rain with another man," he gave Ace a funny look, then reached up and pulled down his scarf so he could smile fondly at him. He tugged Ace's hat down to cover his eyes, "Don't mind me. I like the rain. Your umbrella could be put to a much better use," he stated.

It always comforted Ace to see the older man pull the scarf away and reveal his face to him. He liked the feeling of being trusted. It was funny the way that Warrick had come to trust a thief in the first place. The lt. colonel had stopped him from escaping from that quarantined city. Ace had been more or less a captive. He had felt like a prisoner... until Warrick had started treated him as if he were a guest instead of a criminal. And for some reason the two of them found that they had some sort of unspoken connection and felt that they could trust each other with things that they had never spoken with anyone else about. It was nice to have that sort of person.

Ace returned the smile once he saw Warrick's, though the smile faded into a playful looking pout when the other military officer pulled his hat down over his eyes. "Little do you know..." He trailed off, reaching up and pulling the had back so that it rested on the back of his head. For a minute he just looked at Warrick, but then the mischievous smile returned to his lips. "I'll waste my romance on whoever I want to waste it on. If I want to waste it on you then you can't stop me." The teenager teased, raising the umbrella a bit so that the other military man could fit under it better since he was taller. Probably much taller because Ace was a pretty short young man.

"Besides I can't really think of a better use for my umbrella.... even though you are already completely soaked." He paused briefly before continuing. "But don't let me keep you from your own." He reached over and patted Warrick lightly on the back.

Warrick probably still had to hunch a little to fit himself under the shorter young man's umbrella. And thought he was soaked already, there was something very comfortable about being under an umbrella. It was a shelter. It was a cramped shelter, of course, having to share it with someone else and a much shorter someone else at that. But it was somehow still comfortable. He didn't mind it.

"On me?" he asked, his smile widening a bit. Some of his wet hair was now hanging down in his face since he was hunched over and looking down at Ace at the same time. He wondered if he was dripping on him. "Well, that would be a waste, wouldn't it?" he said, his smile softening a bit again. "Then again, being the romantic man that I am, it's hard for me to believe that romance can ever be wasted," he offered. And shortly after saying it he began to wonder if it was the right thing to say. It somehow seemed inappropriate.

However, this relationship was already inappropriate as it was. It didn't matter that they weren't in uniform of on duty, it just wasn't a relationship that would be considered okay. Warrick couldn't imagine really caring about that, though. The man who always followed all of the rules felt now like he had found something worth breaking them over. Or someone. This thought seemed even more inappropriate, but it was bound to. He tried not to let that bother him. He was having a nice time.

"Well, if you really want me to go then I suppose I should leave you alone," he said then, once more smirking through his dark hair. It was funny that he never smiled so much when he wasn't with Ace, despite how expressive he generally was. He smiled so seldom in a regular basis that the constant grin he found on his face when in the presence of his friend almost made his face feel sore. It felt odd, at least. What did that say about his life? Warrick had never considered himself a generally sad person, boring maybe, but not sad. Was he a sad person? Puzzling.

"There you go again twisting my words." Ace said, though the smile still remained on his face. It was easy to see that the young man didn't let his traumatic past get him down most of the time. Warrick had probably seen that from the very beginning. Ace was a fighter. He had quite the forward personality as well. Even from the beginning it wasn't hard to see that Ace wasn't shy. If the older man didn't know about his past, it was likely that he would never be able to guess this about Ace.

"What I said was that I don't want to keep you from courting your GIRL. But if you'd rather stand around in the rain with me, then who am I to argue?" The young man tilted his face up so that he could look at the older man more properly. Of course, once he did that Warrick's soaked hair dripped on his face. The younger alchemist scrunched up his nose in response to the cold water against his skin.

Of course, the thought of their relationship being inappropriate had crossed his mind, however this was something he could care less about. He was already going about breaking the rules by wearing his hat while he was in uniform, and it was likely he had broken plenty of other rules before... why start following them now? As much as Warrick was enjoying his time with Ace, Ace was enjoying his time with Warrick. More so than he had ever enjoyed anyone else's company.

"You are getting your wetness all over me." The teenager commented, though he didn't seem as if he was particularly worried about it.

Courting his girl. There Ace went again making Warrick sound old. But then, Warrick had been the first person to make himself sound that way, hadn't he? He had a certain way of speaking. He spoke like a man who sat around and read too many old books. He was sort of old fashioned because of this, and because being old fashioned made sticking to strict rules seem like the normal thing to do in most cases. He wanted to think, however, that this was just the side of himself he displayed to those who didn't know him. Like it was his safe facade. He hoped it wasn't all he was.

Warrick really hadn't dried much. Especially his hair and clothing. Those things were soaked. So it was needless to say that he was going to drip. And despite the fact that he hadn't put himself under Ace's umbrella, he still felt apologetic for getting him wet. So he reached up one of his hands and very lightly ran an almost dry thumb over Ace's face in his gentle manner to rid it of some of the drops of water that had ended up there. "I apologize," he said, and it seemed sincere. He remained where he was for a moment, smiling in an apologetic way at Ace, though the apology melted into his warm smile after a few moments.

He removed his hand from Ace and ducked out from under the umbrella, pulling his scarf back up over the portion of his face that he tended to hide from just about everyone. That piece of himself that he had kept to himself for a very long time, but now shared with at least one person on what seemed to be becoming a regular basis. "I have a long day of courting and paperwork to resign myself to. Don't get too wet... Or stay too dry," he said, waving lazily as he turned then to take his leave.
